A Brief History of Alterac Valley

Have you guys seen this?

Q: Are there any plans to redo Alterac Valley with more quests? Some of those quests were truly awesome and it feels like they became obsolete but still lurk around for years now.

A: I don't think we'll revise Alterac Valley anytime soon. This was before my time at Blizzard, but the original idea was that everyone would be questing while PvPing, but that fell short. Eventually people simplified it and found one good way to win. Now, Tol Barad is another example of questing while PvPing that has worked better. We don't have plans yet for an elaborate questing PvP hub at the start of 5.0, but we definitely want to step it up mid-expansion.

Folks, try to voice your support in this thread as well. We could use some visibility over in General.

It's more broad, talking about awesome things that we used to have but don't any more, and encouraging Blizzard to try incorporating some old techniques instead of sticking to their tired old "NEW IS ALWAYS BETTER" mentality.

The day AV went live back on 2005, I got in on my rogue. I was stealthed and walking along a snowy bank, when I got knocked out of stealth by stepping on a land mine. I ended up getting killed by those land mines as I tramped on a couple of them.

Nostalgia

I would play it if it gave no honor or rewards if it came back.

That question was asked in a very stupid way. We want classic AV, the current quests it has are quite fine. All we want is a revised AV separated from the random queue with it's old style system.

Did they really use those words?

Not those words exactly. It was something like that, but I can't seem to track down the particular thread it was in. I believe it was Zarhym, but I could be wrong.

He also stated in another thread that it would be easier to re-do AV from scratch than to try to revert the changes.

We haven't stopped talking about it. Part of the problem is Battlegrounds are incredibly scripted, to the point they're actually worked on quite a bit by our encounter design team. We need to keep working on new ways of developing Battlegrounds to improve their design.

But, to your point, it's doubtful AV 1.0 will be resurrected, and there's only so much tweaking we can do to try and improve the current one -- we'd be working on very old framework with AV. At this point, it'd probably be easier and produce better results if we started from scratch.

Agreed agreed a thousand times agreed. Everyone who wants old av, or at least having av redesigned to be more like it, request sticky and show blizz we are serious.

These type of responses by Blizzard, quite frankly, scare the absolute heck out of me.

Why?

Blizzard billed Isle of Conquest and Wintergrasp in their original descriptions when they released them as "if you enjoyed old Alterac Valley, then these are for you". Well, guess what? Neither of them were even remotely close, and it is really insulting to think THAT is how they view PvP as their interpretation of what players want.

Blizzard needs a heaping helping of "IF IT ISN'T BROKE, DON'T FIX IT".

Hey Foury how my bumping skills of support?

While it's great to keep these threads on the front page, try to at least pretend to be adding to the discussion. We want to appear professional, after all. Try to find creative ways to disguise the bump, or even just add a few legitimate thoughts of your own each time.

Hey, anything for Old AV. Let's take what we can get.

I've never played the original one.. I've heard stories that you could leave one day and then come back to the same one the next day. :O

Right now, I avoid AV as much as possible, although turtles are sometimes fun..

With MoP and all that happening right now, the devs seem to be more open than ever about accepting player input. Lets push this agenda again.

Bring back AV!

I'm sad I missed it all.

I hear so many stories about how awesome pvp used to be in vanilla, now it all just seems streamlined.

Get in, get your honour, then gtfo. gg...

I also miss the old epic battles at xroads, TM, southshore, etc...

I do miss the old days. PvP/WPvP was a lot better back then. It actually was fun to go explore the world and possibly get into a huge fight as you got ganked, called in help to counter gank, only to have 50+ people duking it out in Southshore/TM where you couldn't escape without
"res sickness" Now, you just have to time it right, and you can mount up/bird form away before they can get you back in combat.

AV though, was by far some of the most fun I had. It wasn't as personal as WPvP, but you got well known in those fights and even made friends across servers. You actually got the impression that this fight was actually worth winning and you had to do whatever you could to make a difference. Now, well like everyone said. Its a Zergfest with no regard to the other fraction. WSG nets more honor then AV and is usually shorter which is pathetic. It is, in its current state, a joke for both honor and PvP combat considering you can do WSG faster, get more honor and get a ton more actual combat in it.

Personally I would love to see the old AV back, or at the least remade to some form of what it was instead of a zerg fest.
