And that's less than what Google gives away in exchange for people ignoring a few ads on the right side of their mail client.
"Too much space"/"Slows down database" is not the reason. When you're talking about a few million items in inventory on a server, that's something a $500 PC could handle now.
Play balance is a perfectly fine reason though.
You are aware that Google isn't actually giving away as much space as they say, right? It's not that any one person can't use all the data Google is offering, but that 99.98% of people just don't. Google knows that, which is why they can give everyone 5-10GB of email storage for free. I've had a gmail account since day 1 of private invites and I've still only used about 400 megs of space, if that, and I'm a heavy emailer. It's also worth noting that ads work. You or me may not click on them but enough people do to support leeches like us.
To be honest, I have to wonder what sort of DB work you do, since you take the large volume nature of world of warcrafts database so lightly for something that needs to be very efficient and redundant.
