Good movie. Arguably James Cameron's best.

Aliens in general. Not the movie, though I have been meaning to watch that movie. Currently I am watching the Series Ancient Aliens. Good series and poses a lot of questions that are fun to toy around with.

Move this to the UFO thread. That's basically what it's about.
UFO's and Aliens are completely different
While technically true, most people associate UFOs with aliens and vice versa.
Because humans are so amazing and we are worth it because everything needs to see how superior we are to everything else in everywhere... |
I am glad so many people agree on their existence. In my opinion it would be mathematically absurd to believe that we are the only intelligent life forms in the universe and/or other universes.
Life almost certainly exists that did not originate from Earth. How it developed, how intelligent or technologically advanced it is, and if they would even be interested in interacting with us are completely different questions.

It's always fun to consider it, and of course most people who think logically understand that It's feasible that intelligent beings exist elsewhere in the universe. What isn't thought of or considered as much is why or how they would (or could) visit earth from such staggering distances. Much like the UFO idea, (when using the ET hypothesis to describe some), the strongest argument against it other than "no smoking gun" evidence is the fact that they simply can't get there from here. I believe that is wrong, I think that WE can't get there from here; yet, but in terms of age our species is barely out of the cave. Speaking hypothetically, imagine a species that evolves technology as quickly as we do elsewhere; 100 years ahead of us however, considering our progress over the last 100 years (no manned aircraft to moon landing), the results could be extreme. Advance that by 1,000 years, 1 Million, 1 billion? The difference between us and a species of that nature is incomprehensible. To us, such beings could appear godlike and achieve feats that exist to us only in the realm of fantasy and sci-fi.
After all that time, could they really "not get here from there"? Boggle. |
I would be completely baffled if there wasn't a single alien bacteria out there, since I am so sure there going to be, as single cell organisms here can survive harshnesses my body cannot begin to cope with.

The possibility of life, is very high. Life however, includes down to the level of simple single cell orginisms. The chance that a complex civilization might evolve? Very low. At least by current scientific estimates. However, do consider this... Science doesn't even know enough about us yet. You mentioned the "Ancient Aliens" series. Good series, (though I think it rabbles way too aimlessly in too many directions. Some of the crap talked up on that show was WAY over done) and it brings up a good theory; the Ancient Astronaut theory. The chances to meet civilized life could be increased by a single race planting genetic paths for other species to grow; just like what some claimed the Sumerians were talking of with the Annunaki and the Adamu.
The issue of FTL and how one gets past that is a huge hole in our perceptive nature. For some reason, most people attempting to beat down the UFO theories forget that pure FTL Travel isn't the only way to beat FTL issues. Trans-dimensional travel, slip streams, folding of space; all different theories being tested as forms of possibly beating Light Speed. All it might take is a simply trip to another universe where time and space have different meaning; so when we exit to our space on the other side; it's like we never even moved. |

I watch Ancient Aliens and the Science Channel. Both have offered controversial theories on the existance of aliens. I, for one, believe. I find it silly to think out of all the planets and systems in the universe, ours is the only one that can support life. They have left evidence of their presence all over history. I just dont understand why they dont reveal themselves to all of us instead of just individuals.
Either they have a very sick sense of humor, or they aren't there. Ocam's razor says the burden of proof is on believers, and so far there has been absolutely no evidence that aliens have visited earth. |
Not exactly. There is much anecdotal evidence, but that's not enough. As for Ocam's razor, ehh, it doesn't actually apply to this subject for a fairly simple reason.. Religion. If Aliens were to reveal themselves in would wreck religious populations. Some people think, as a religious principle, that Humans are the only sentient species in the universe. The chaos Aliens could cause by showing themselves is...outstanding. Not just through human fear, but through people who base their entire moral code off of religious beliefs. It could be even worse if they came down and said "ohh, yeah, that was Glilly Glob Gloe who you guys thought was the son of this "god" fellow".. |
That presupposes that ET's are capable of understanding Human psychology. This seems unlikely, for the simple reason that anthrocentrism has been such a valuable tool for human expansion. It seems reasonable to assume that any alien race we encountered would be similarly self-centered. |
While certainly true to a point, there is a difference between self-centered and stupid. It's almost certain that any sentient race would have it's own religions and dogmas, and despite the technical advancement they would have to be able to travel here, if that is still around depends on how deeply it was ever ingrained in their cultures. Anyone who is familiar with any religion knows its a sensitive subject, and it doesn't matter if you believe in one or not. Of course, that is making the assumption that their thought processes would work anything like ours. |
