My honest reaction to the Pandas

1 hidden quest doesn't count as always been in the game, IMO. I likr the pandaren and I'm real excited to do their questline to learn more about them. I just think that if there had been a little more exposure to them, there wouldn't be so many opposed to it. Until i heard the panel discussion about it i was confused about what they were doing here and of course thought it was joke. It just took some time to settle in.

It's ALWAYS been in the game.

Since Vanilla, it's been there.

I think its less about that and more about exposure. I could be wrong, of course, but I believe Bocephuss is talking about the Panderan not being a persistent presence in the world, regardless of the one Chen acknowledgment quest.

I'm just concerned that the entire expansion is going to be Panderia themed. The raids, the dungeons. Everything.
That would be like wearing Troll looking armor and weapons, running troll themed raids and even pvp gear with a troll aesthetic for an entire expansion. People are bored out of their mind of the current two troll heroics, and they haven't even been out that long. Granted its old content with a face lift.
But would Northrend been better if it was nothing but Zul Drak? My guess is no.

I want to experience World of Warcraft. Not just Panderia. Cataclysm literally takes you all over the world. From Mount Hyjal to the Abyssal depths and even to other elemental planes!
Its kind of disheartening to go from that to just Panderia.
No matter how much effort you put into it, people will get tired of the theme. The people who aren't fond of Panderia to begin with will get bored with it quicker.

Pandaria-themed would be asian themed, which has a very wide range of concepts to draw from.

Northrend was very much cold-themed: Then the teir gear represented different groups or monsters etc.

Same with Cata. Very rough and tumble pre-teir gear, then teir geared themed from the Twilight cult, to fish-heads for hunters, to Deathwing Jaw coming up in 4.3.

The art team has always presented a wide array of thematic choice in both zone design and gear design. Im not too worried.

It's this of course.

There are people that do honestly think Pandaren are a rip off of Kung-Fu Panda.

Sure it's hard to see that in the wave of LOL PANDAZ HURR but it's there.

If more people had known about them, or if they had been given a bit more of an introduction into the game besides little Easter eggs & a pet, there might have been less backlash.

... don't you hate it when people actively misspell things even after seeing the correct way to spell it just 5 minutes ago? (example: Sylvanas, Pandaren, and Pandaria) seriously... it really gets on my nerves...

I was genuinely excited and I like all the ideas. I just want it to be a good game. The ideas I've heard don't make me think it will be anything but more fun.

Well said OP! I like your thinking. I had a similar reaction at first but the idea is growing on me.

They asked "Come with us, come see what were doing here." So, Ill give it a shot. I mean, my roommate said it: "What -if- it turns out to be a lot of fun?"

I think a lot of the negative comments are passing over the fact that that it's not really the idea of the "panda world" that's off-putting, but the pseudo-Asian Kung Fu type tying that they're pushing into a world that probably won't naturally accommodate it.

Case in point:

Did you ever see that remake of "The Three Musketeers" that featured the classic story set in eighteenth century France where the director decided to hire a martial arts specialist and insert a rather large load of Kung Fu Tom Foolery into the story?

This one:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0246544/

The tag line was even: "As You've Never Seen It Before."

And the movie was a failure because it was a bad combination of some Eastern spirituality martial arts thing and a story set in France that just didn't mesh well with the idea.

People engaging in martial arts and gravity-defying flips off a wall were ridiculous when paired with people wearing eighteenth century hats with long white feathers in them.

That is what this expansion feels like. I feel like someone has hired Jackie Chan to teach a bunch of dragons how to do a roundhouse kick.

And it's not boating my float right now.

I see where youre coming from. I do feel, however, that the scenario you describe isnt whats happening here.

Instead of an eastern-style mentality in a western-style setting, we just have an Eastern.
To use your example, instead of the musketeer story being infused with eastern mentality and martial arts, what if the three musketeers had a new story where they went to china?

Its akin to the Europeans discovering America in my mind. Here they are, for centuries, no idea this other continent exists. Then they find it and lo, a people and culture vastly different from their own.

The world can naturally accommodate it just like ours can. It takes finesse to pull off and thats what we will have to wait and see if Blizz can deliver.

Ummm..........

Why should the lore have to have existed in Warcraft 1 thru 3 to be playable and exist in WoW? I NEVER understood that!

Let WORLD of Warcraft develop its own lore and FURTHER the story, for gods sake! (Time DOES move forward in Azeroth! Most of the time. heh) I wanna see MORE characters and baddies that we never encountered!

It's so sick to me that there are players out there that would rather have setback after setback after setback, just so we can keep bringing up the same characters we are soooo bored with at this point! *yawn*

Would you rather we just keep focusing on the Scourge and Burning Legion? Would some of you sadly prefer that? :/ Lame.

BRING ON THE PANDAS!

Pandaren are no more stupid than Tauren.

Or female Dwarves.

After playing for so long I still want to ask "are you wearing a diaper?"

In the end the Pandaren race carries the stigma of the Jack Black movie, which has been labelled a "kiddie movie" and thus uncool for some WoW players.

Don't underestimate the amount of data Blizzard has gathered and analyzed over the years. They probably have a very good idea of how much actual subscribers will be gained and lost by each of their design choices. Overall, the design choices, Pandaren included, are what they believe will keep the majority of the playerbase interested in something.

While the Pandaren toon design can be polarizing, I'm relying on the storytelling that's being promised. The Horde sacking Theramore, Jaina going medieval on the evil Horde, war on the high seas, both factions washing ashore on the World Turtle and facilitating an Old God corruption of the idyllic Pandaren way of life... there's an epic story there somewhere.

And I don't trust Blizz to not have a 12-to-6 curveball in there. As a most-of-the-time Alliance player I'll be happy to hammer down Garrosh, Sylvanas and their flunky Hordelings. But I'll eat my Woodchucker if we don't get an Old God as a raid boss somewhere in this expansion. Maybe it's the World Turtle itself.

As long as Blizz delivers epic story, really don't care that much what anthropomorphic race they introduce.

Since it's very asian-influenced in terms of design, here's to hoping mages learn how to conjure Phở in the next expansion.

Im trying hard to, im locked into WoW for a year, and even then my guildmates and i have built up relationships in the past years. WoW is more than a game, so when people say "if you dont like it just quit" they clearly dont understand the commitment being stressed here. They're making new lore, ok. I still dont like the fit, but it wouldnt be the first time, whatevers, i didnt roll a goblin either because i found the starting area increasing annoying by the minute.

My point is, while i always try to be optimistic there are few features im finding myself excited for. The PvP scenarios are something different, but i do not know if ill enjoy carting around ore or diamonds or seeing how long it takes me til i die holding a useless object. Im afraid i wont become vested in the dungeons or raids, i havent been since wrath to be honest. The pokemon doesnt interest me, so i wont be doing that. My time is limited so my WoW time is spent on what i like PvE and PvP.

Which brings me to Valor for questing, meh. How bout a sub valor currency for their own slightly sub level gear, such as was available in the troll heroics. Resil as a base stat? Why was this needed? How will it help PvP? It might possibly lead to more pve players being involved in pvp...you can hit up your local bg and see how well that usually works out.

The new talent system, less points, less total choices, less individuality, which i thought was the point of changing talent trees(less cookie cutter)

Horde Versus Alliance!!!! I LOVE THAT IDEA. However it was infered that this would be happening in Cata, in light of the discovery of new lands.

The monk class is minimally appetizing, but i might try the melee out, as im a sucker for mdps class. However unless my pally get seriously screwed over theres no way im giving that up.

I personally think the panda racial abilities are too OP, think of any other racial ability that has as much of an impact as double food buff stats.

Theres more to list but i am tired and going to bed now.
