4.3 Elemental PvE Guide: The Perfect Thunderstorm

To weed out a little bit of the confusion- Yes I xferred to Zul'jin

Hello Shaman Community, and welcome to an updated Elemental PvE guide for Patch 4.3! The purpose of this guide is to give beginner elemental shamans a good start on where to begin, as well as teach the ready-to-raid players how to maximize their potential.

This guide is unlike my guides in the past. Before I stated they were for raiding, but this will be much broader than that. Over my career of forum cruising it came to my realization that new players may be intimidated by seeing a raiding guide, and think it’s above what they should be learning. It is for that reason that I have redone the guide. The raiding information provided by guide is still here, but I hope that this guide layout will be a lot more beneficial for players of all skill/content level. That being said this guide is still intended for level 85 PvE orientated players who want to push raid content.

Correcting/updating this guide- I ask that if anyone finds any bad, unclear, misleading or information I may have left out that you please notify me so that I can make changes.

***A special thanks to everyone on the shaman forum that helps put out good Elemental Shaman information. While I get a lot of credit for putting guides up this wouldn't be doable without the help of others, especially from the mathematical standpoint. Binkenstein, and Moshne, though not avid WoW forum posters, do a lot of work over at EJ/totemspot. At the WoW forum standpoint Gistwiki also helps out drastically. Don't forget to /love them***

1. Introduction to being an elemental shaman
So the first thing you need to understand about your spec is what the purpose of your spec is, and if it is right for you. The elemental shaman is a ranged caster that specializes predominately in nature, with a side of fire, and a very light touch of frost.

Since you are a caster being far away from your target is best. You have no obligation to be in melee contact, and you want to keep away from them as much as possible. For PvE dungeons/raids this isn’t a huge deal since your tank should be holding the threat on the mobs anyways.

To start off the beginner shamans we are going to take a look at the important PvE spells you want to use.

A. Important Spells

Damage Spells

Damage spells are quite simply spells that deal damage in one way shape or form for you. Just because they deal damage though doesn’t mean they’re good, or that you should use them every chance you get. More will be covered on how to use these spells to the best of their ability later on.

Lightning bolt

Currently our “bread and butter” spell. This is the filler spell we us, and you will cast this spell the most.

Chain lightning

Chain lightning is meant for PvE AoE situations, and as of patch 4.3 we no longer have a cooldown on it, which makes it a great AoE tool.

Flame Shock

Guarantees you critical strikes with lava burst. This should be up on your target 100% of the time (or as close to it as you can). Through the lava surge talent this spell can also reset the cooldown of Lava Burst which is a big reason why it’s invaluable to keep up on the target.

Lava Burst

A good nuke that should always be a critical strike, and will be great for burst. Be sure to track lava surge procs as it resets Lava Burst cool down.

Earth Shock

By itself earth shock is a worthless spell that we don’t care to use, however due to our rolling thunder talent we gain lightning shield charges up to a maximum of 9, and dump those charges through earth shock as extra damage. Therefore this spell becomes a situational ability we want to use.

Lightning shield

Lightning shield is used for maximizing your damage. As stated before we gain lightning shield charges through lightning bolt, and dump them through earth shock. We also restore mana through lightning shield, and you will have mana problems without keeping it active.

Unleash Weapon

Unleash weapon is a very weak spell for us to use in PvE. The damage gained is not very good in comparison to other abilities even if it does make our lava burst damage look pretty.

Elemental Mastery

20% haste, instant cast on next spell, and 15% more damage? Yes please! This ability should be used on cooldown (provided you can get use out of it) as we have a talent called feedback that will reduce the CD of it by 3 seconds every time we cast lightning bolt.

Utility spells

Utility spells are used to assist you in combat but not deal damage. These are spells such as damage absorbs, slows, roots, or crowd control, and an elemental shaman brings a good range of utility spells to the game.

Hex

Hex is a pretty great CC to use. It doesn’t break on damage, but has a low damage breakpoint, and lasts 1 minute with a 45 second cooldown. Hex does check your hit rating throughout the duration so if you are not hit capped Hex can break early.

Thunderstorm

Thunderstorm is a knockback ability that also slows your enemy by 40% for a short time. It can give your tank or healer time to recuperate and get organized. It also restores 8% of your mana, but usually this mana isn’t required.

Totems

Totems in general provide utility that can allow you to escape enemies, boost your damage, or mitigate damage. While I will not go over every single totem here it is important to become acquainted with your totems.

Spiritwalker's Grace

Spiritwalker's grace is the new level 85 talent that all shamans can pick up. When used, you are able to cast all shaman spells while moving for 15 seconds. You can also use this ability while casting other spells. Use this spell when you have to cast and move.

B. Using your totems

Totems! Totems! Totems!
…Totems!

Totems are unique to the shaman class as they provide powerful buffs to us and our party/raid, and utilizing them is of utmost importance. However a lot of classes now bring the same buffs so sometimes you will find that there is not a ton of variety to bring with your totems, and you may have to change up your typical totem drops from time to time. This section will mainly go over which totems you should typically use, and which ones you should use situationally.

Fire
Staple: Searing totem
Description: The only single target dps totem we have
Alternatives: Magma for AoE, and Fire elemental for a burn phase

Earth
Staple: Stoneskin or Strength of Earth
Description: I prioritize Stoneskin over earth for tanks if I have to choose between one
Alternatives: Earth Elemental if you need the 3 seconds it will live for to get a tank up, or to reset a fight.

Air
Staple: Wrath of Air or Windfury
Description: I prioritize wrath of air over windfury for healers if I have to choose between one
Alternatives: Grounding may be helpful in some situations, but usually not in raids.

Water
Staple: Mana spring or Healing Stream
Description: Mana spring if you don't have blessing of might from a paladin or another shaman, otherwise use healing stream
Alternatives: Tranquil mind is not very helpful in a raid environment, but may have situational use

C. Gearing and stat values

The next two big things you need to understand is what to look for in gear which mainly means what stats we want to stack, or more importantly; avoid. Stats have two categories: main, and secondary.

Main stats

Main stats are intellect, strength, agility, and spirit. Let’s rank them.

1) Spirit/hit rating

Since you have the talent elemental precision maxed then point for point spirit is equivalent to hit rating and you can mix/match the two of them together to obtain the hit rating you need. More will be covered later on how much hit rating you need for certain encounters.

2) Intellect

Besides hit rating every spec in the game has a main stat that is their king and intellect is ours. Each point increases our spell power by 1.05 (due to armor specialization), mana by 15, and crit chance by .054%. Besides hit rating it is the stat you want to stack the most of.

3) Stamina

Stamina is our final main stat we “like”, however it’s not something we need to look for. All gear at level 85 will contain stamina, and it increases our health by 10 per point.

Unranked) Strength/agility

Strength and agility are terrible stats for us, and provide ZERO benefit. Never touch a piece with either one as it’s a huge downgrade for you.

Secondary Stats

Secondary stats are stats that boost our damage, but not directly like a main stat will, and therefore that makes some of them good, and some of them not so good. While I will rank them below this is a very crucial bit of information: Haste and mastery are very similar in terms of a DPS gain, read carefully over the next posts covering stats because there is only a general answer, and not a straightforward one.

1) Haste

Haste is typically our strongest stat. It decreases our cast time for lightning bolt, lava burst, and increases the number of flame shock ticks we get per cast. It also decreases the GCD allowing us to cast more spells.

At level 85 you need 128 points of haste rating to increase your haste by 1%.

2) Mastery

Each spec has a unique mastery with it, and for elemental shamans our mastery gives us a chance to proc an additional lightning bolt, chain lightning, or lava burst for 75% damage for no mana or extra threat. This makes mastery a strong secondary stat, but the generalization is that it falls ever so slightly behind haste. A perfect piece of gear for us is loaded with intellect, haste, and mastery. Feel free to savor every point you get.

At level 85 you need 179 points of mastery rating to increase your mastery by 1 point (ie: extra 2% proc chance).

3) Critical Strike Rating

Critical strike rating is by our weakest secondary stat. It pales in comparison to haste or mastery. You will probably pick up a couple pieces of gear with it, but you will reforge it off as much as you can. Critical strike is so weak for us is because lava burst will always be a critical strike, which is a fair portion of your damage, and critical strike doesn’t affect it.

At level 85 you need 180 points of critical strike rating to increase your crit chance by 1%.

Gearing

A properly geared elemental shaman will kick some serious butt in PvE whereas an improperly geared elemental shaman will cause other classes to come to our forum and whine about how pathetic we are. There are several key things you should be aware of.

  • Gear with intellect is our friend. If it doesn’t have intellect it’s bad, and you don’t want it.
  • At level 50 Mail specialization increases our intellect by 5% for wearing all mail armor. This means dropping a piece of mail for leather is bad a decision. As you get more geared armor specialization will penalize you more for not wearing all mail, therefore when you are level 85 assume an ilevel 272 common mail piece is better than an ilevel 391 epic leather piece.
  • For gearing yourself with weapons a staff or a 1H + shield/off-hand is an acceptable combination. Many people think that just because we can use shields that we should always stick to them which is false. In PvE large amounts of physical damage is rarely dealt to players other than the tanks, and you can definitely use a staff if it’s an upgrade. Don’t let other people dissuade you from using one.
  • Haste and mastery are great stats to have on a piece of gear.
  • Critical strike rating is our worst stat (that we can use) and we try to avoid it as much as possible.
  • Has spirit? That’s ok! We have a talent early on in our talent tree that increases our hit rating based off our spirit rating. This means that spirit is not a stat we need to avoid. On the contrary we want it until we are hit capped.

  • Keep these things in mind and you’re on the right track.

    2. Making the most out of your DPS

Min/maxing is an important aspect that is required out of your character. Taking your character to the fullest can make a huge difference. As someone who frequents the forums often (on multiple classes) I see a lot of people complaining that their damage is low when they haven’t put the effort into their character like they should have, and after some tutoring they end up realizing how big of a difference it made. The first place you should start with your character is the stats on his gear.

    A. Stat priority

The general rule is: Hit/spirit (until cap) > Haste > Mastery >>>> Crit

    Hit rating scale

Level 85 mobs (Players or mobs): 4%, or 410 hit rating, is required.
Level 86 mobs (mobs): 5%, or 512 hit rating, is required.
Level 87 mobs (cataclysm heroic dungeon bosses)- 6% hit chance, or 614 hit rating, is required.
Level 88 mobs (Raid bosses): 17% hit chance, or 1742 hit rating, is required.

***Draenei are given a 1% hit rating through their racial. This rating is equivalent to 102 hit rating so draenei players should subtract the above totals by 102 to get their actual requirement.***

    Haste vs Mastery

A very common debate people like to have is whether haste or mastery is a stronger secondary stat. The answer, as stated above, is that haste has typically been our strongest stat, and odds are that you can safely invest in haste over mastery and be correct. That being said it is not always the case, and if you truly want to know which stat is better there is only one answer, "Sim it". Yes people, this means you WILL have to do work. Sorry folks, we can't do it all for you. *Sadface*

To get you started on simcraft start here: http://www.totemspot.com/vb/showthread.php?t=6338

Now, outside of learning how to use simcraft, and simming yourself there are several key points you can also take into account to put you in the general direction on whether haste or mastery is stronger for you.

    As Gistwiki points out:

    1) T13-4pc: This bonus doesn't devalue haste, but it does increase the value of Mastery.

    2) Insignia of the Corrupted Mind: For the normal and heroic mode trinkets, you're GCD-capping at around 2500 haste from the rest of your gear when this procs. As such, the trinket will ever-so-slightly devalue haste above that point. Not much, but enough possibly to cause you to switch.

    3) Legendary staff: The staff scales better with more mastery than it does with more haste. 1% haste is 128.05716 haste rating. 1% haste rating is 1% more spells. 128.05716 is .714 mastery, which is 1.428% Ele overload, which is 1.428% more LBs/LvBs. This relationship causes DTR to slightly increase the value of mastery relative to haste.

    4) How close you are to a haste breakpoint on Flame Shock. As our only DoT spell, and one of the weakest overall DoT spells, Flame Shock causes us to have a unique relationship with haste among all casters. As we approach a breakpoint, the relative value of haste goes down, and then it goes up after we reach that breakpoint.

    https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?authkey=CKPti9oE&key=0AsDL8HE-bGDVdEU1S1NqMW5IbWU1dURKcmdibFFTeVE&authkey=CKPti9oE#gid=15

The above link will show you values of haste required for breakpoints, and the associated buffs that you need for those breakpoints.

The reason for this is because of how weak Flame Shock is in relation to other DoT spells. Because haste slightly reduces the overall length of the DoT, more haste up to a breakpoint means more casting of your DoTs, which for most classes is great because of how strong your DoT spells are.

For Elemental however, this isn't the case. Because of how weak overall Flame Shock is as a DoT spell, we actually gain more from casting more of our other spells because haste scales with them better than it does with Flame Shock. Thus, as we approach a breakpoint, we're casting more Flame shocks and getting less out of our haste because of it. Hence the dip in value as we approach a breakpoint and the jump in value as we get past it.

This means that Haste dips in value as you approach a breakpoint for Flame Shock. This could cause it to dip under mastery for awhile.

#3/4 have caused my mastery to climb above haste for me. I'm in the process of figuring out how long that'll last (simcraft) now.

Props to Binkenstein for explaining #4 over on totemspot. Pretty much all of that logic in #4 is sparked from him.

    B. Speccing and glyphing

Speccing and glyphing is another important aspect of the class you must grasp if you plan on going anywhere in the game.

    How to Properly Spec

Here our skeleton elemental spec: http://www.wowhead.com/talent#hhGMGRfkzGZbhM

You have 3 talent points left over.

    Viable options include:

    Earthquake
    Convection
    Elemental warding
    Totemic Reach
    Ancestral Resolve
    Spark of life

EQ is not needed on every fight so it can be situational to have it.

Convection, while considered a DPS talent since it will increase your mana efficiency, is an extremely weak talent since we have no mana problems unless you die and reincarnate, and even then we are so efficient with mana it serves little purpose. A fresh 85 may want to use this if they AoE, but shortly after gearing up you can ignore this talent completely.

Elemental warding is spell damage mitigation which gives you 4% damage reduction per point (maximum of 3 points). This talent is nice for PvE since most raid wide damage will be magical, and very rarely physical.

Totemic Reach is a luxury, but it's not really needed.

Ancestral resolve and Spark of Life are two talents in the restoration tree that increase your survivability. You can't max both at the same time though, but both are strong talents to have.

Earth's grasp is good on a fight that has AoE and you need to control adds, such as nef P1/P3. It's mainly a PvP talent that serves very little purpose in PvE.

    Max DPS Spec: http://www.wowhead.com/talent#hhGMGRfkzGZboZbhb

The above is a max DPS spec that disregards movement in the encounter. While the spec may seem silly at first for going so deep into the resto tree the reason being is because totemic focus increases the duration of the fire elemental, which is actually a DPS increase even when you lose 2 points in improved shields. This spec is fairly situational, so don't make this your main elemental spec.

    Glyphing

Glyphing is another aspect that you should understand when playing any class as there are many glyphs out there that are not beneficial even though they look appealing and can sway you away from critical glyphs that you must have.

    i. Prime

    Required- Glyph of Flame Shock
Situational- Glyph of Lightning Bolt, Glyph of Lava Burst, Glyph of Fire Elemental Totem, Glyph of Unleashed Lightning

Flame shock is required. More uptime on flame shock means less refreshing and more earth shocks. This also means you will have less of a chance to having flame shock and earth shock conflictions when you need to refresh flame shock, but also have too many charges of lightning shield.

Unleashed Lightning, fire elemental, lightning bolt, and lava burst are all thrown up in the air.

Unleashed lightning- This is a great glyph for heavy movement fights. Any fight that requires heavy movement makes this glyph a must have. For dungeons it is not nearly as essential, but certainly handy.

Lightning bolt, and Lava burst are straight DPS increases. Lightning bolt is considered the staple, but lava burst gains ground over it in FL gear and our 4 piece bonus. Generally if you don’t have the T12 4 piece then use lightning bolt, and if you have the T12 4 piece use Lava burst.

Glyph of fire elemental- This glyph is a good DPS increase if the fight allow multiple FE drops throughout the fight, however the fight needs to last at least 7-8 minutes for it to be worthwhile. In that situation you would drop it at the beginning of the fight, and again near the end of the fight. The closer the fight lasts to when you could drop the fire elemental the better it gets compared to other glyphs. For example: if the fight lasts 7-8 minutes it’s a good DPS increase. However if the fight lasts 9-10 minutes it loses value because the glyph is doing nothing for you for those last 2-3 minutes whereas LB/LvB glyph would have done you work.

    ii. Major

    Required: Glyph of Lightning Shield

    Situational:
    Glyph of Thunder
    Glyph of Stoneclaw Totem
    Glyph of Healing Stream Totem
    Glyph of Chain Lightning
    Glyph of Elemental Mastery

Besides the lightning shield glyph all major glyphs break down into personal preference, and what the raid comp may need. Personally I like glyph of elemental mastery, and stoneclaw for mitigation purposes. My raid comp is built around not needing healing stream, and I don’t really need the reduced CD on thunderstorm. YMMV

    iii. Minor

Recommended: Glyph of Thunderstorm Glyph of Renewed Life

Thunderstorm can be useful on certain fights and renewed life is a quality of life thing. Sometimes you want the knockback though so be wary of that. The other glyph is a personal choice.

    C. Enchanting, and Gemming

Here is a breakdown on gemming. As always I suggest the rare quality gems since they will yield the highest dps gain.

Patch 4.3 is on the way and epic gems will be released with it. So far getting epic gems sounds like it will be a royal pain so if you decide to hold onto them until the right gear comes along no one will blame you (except Dream Paragon).

Meta: Burning Shadowspirit Diamond (Requires 3 red gems)
Red: Brilliant Queen's Garnet or Brilliant Inferno Ruby
Orange- Haste: Reckless Lava Coral or Reckless Ember Topaz
Orange- Mastery: Artful Lava Coral or Artful Ember Topaz
*Purple: Purified Shadow Spinel or Purified Demonseye

***If you use an orange gem the socket should be worth it. This is typically any amount of intellect, haste, or mastery. Crit is not going to be worth it. You can also use purple gems to get to the hit cap and a full spirit gem would be wasted.

Purple gems should be used when a blue socket is worth the bonus. This is generally any amount of intellect. If the socket bonus is +20 int (or more) then you should ALWAYS gem for int+spirit/int+hit. The reason being is you can get the extra hit rating and 40 int due to the bonus. While the general mindset is to get hit capped without gems there is no advantage to just using a brilliant cut instead, and this way you net yourself hit rating which means you don't have to reforge out of as much haste/mastery/crit***

    Enchanting

Enchanting is an important thing to do with your gear. It adds up. You may say something like “well if I don’t enchant my weapon it’s JUST a dps loss of 200….or 300”. This is ok logic. If you are the only one in the raid not enchanting a piece of gear it’s not the end of the world. Now tell me what happens if the other 9 (or 24) raid members follow your logic? Exactly. Never skimp out on an enchant. Even if you have to use a lower form of enchant…ALWAYS enchant it.

I will list the best enchants available, and alternatives if they exist.

Head: Arcanum of Hyjal- Requires Hyjal Revered

Shoulders: Greater Inscription of Charged Lodestone- Requires Therazene Exalted
Inscription- Felfire Inscription (130 intellect and 25 haste)

Cloak: Enchant Cloak - Greater Intellect
Tailor- Lightweave embroidery (Chance to increase intellect by 580 on cast)

Chest: Enchant Chest - Peerless Stats
Affordable- Enchant Chest - Mighty Stats

Bracer: Enchant Bracer - Mighty Intellect
Leatherworker- Draconic Embossment - Intellect (130 intellect)
    Affordable- Enchant Bracer - Speed
Lacking hit- Enchant Bracer - Exceptional Spirit OR Enchant Bracer - Precision

    Gloves:Enchant Gloves - Greater Mastery
Engineer- Synapse Springs (480 intellect for 10 seconds)
Affordable- Enchant Gloves - Mastery Enchant Gloves - Haste

    Belt: Ebonsteel Belt Buckle
*Engineers- Grounded plasma Shield (18,000 damage absorb) OR NitroBoosts (300% speed increase for 5 seconds)

    Legs: Powerful Ghostly Spellthread

    Boots: Enchant Boots - Haste

Weapon: Enchant Weapon - Power Torrent
    Affordable: Enchant Weapon - Hurricane

    Shield/Offhand: Enchant Off-Hand - Superior Intellect

Enchanters: Enchant Ring - intellect (increases intellect by 40 per ring)

*Either the shield or boosts are acceptable. The boots can leak and take out a good chunk of health (80% of current health iirc), and the shield has a chance to increase the chance to be critically hit by 100% or taunt all enemies around you, so it's a pick your poison deal.

    D. Reforging

So a big question I see on the forums is: REFORGING??? HOW DOES IT WORK? It’s very simple really.

The reforging system works off the stat priority system. Take the lowest possible stat you have on it and reforge it to the highest stat (besides intellect as you can’t reforge to it) you can that you need.

A simple set of rules to follow:

    From Elitistjerks

    1. If an item has hit/spirit and crit, reforge hit/spirit to haste if you have excess hit rating, otherwise reforge crit to haste.

    2. If an item has hit/spirit and haste, reforge hit/spirit to mastery if you have excess hit rating, otherwise leave it alone!

    3. If an item has hit/spirit and mastery, reforge hit/spirit to haste if you have excess hit rating, otherwise reforge mastery to haste.

    4. If an item has crit and haste, reforge crit to Mastery

    5. If an item has crit and mastery, reforge crit to Haste

    6. If an item has haste and mastery, leave it alone!

Going outside that: You can DL the addon Reforgelite to help you calculate reforging in-game. Be warned though, the preset is set to assume haste > mastery, which has been true for pretty much the entire expansion. Once you gear yourself in DS gear the two start to balance out more, and eventually pushes slightly towards mastery (And even more into Mastery if you get the legendary). Therefore you should be using Simcraft to have stat weights so that you can accurately have it reforge yourself.

There are also many other reforging tools out there, but you always want to take precautions with them. Machines do make mistakes, you don't just want to assume it's doing it right. They usually will, but these tools are made by humans, and we do not make everything perfect (See the Leaning Tower...I mean it's crooked, come on).

    E. The Proper Priority Rotation

The most important thing to a well played DPS class is executing the proper priority system. Have Heroic Deathwing loot, the legendary staff, and your fire elemental up 100% of the time, if you just cast lightning bolt you are only at a fraction of your playing potential.

Essentially, even though the name speaks for itself, a priority system is a system where you perform the highest ability on the priority list you can and work your way down to the bottom (or until a higher priority ability is active again). Not following the priority system can severely cripple your damage, and make you look unappealing as a possible raid member.

    Single target priority system

    1. A fire totem is down (For the 10% SP)
    2. Lightning Shield is active
    3. Flame Shock if not up or has less than 5 seconds remaining
    4. Lava Burst
*5. Earth Shock with 7 charges or more AND flame shock will last until shock CD is back up
    6. Lightning Bolt
    **7. Unleash Weapon when moving

*Earth Shock/Fulmination is a DPS gain over LB at 7 stacks, but you typically want to drop it at 9 if possible, or at least at 8 (this is the “safe” number). You also want to make sure that you don’t let flame shock drop as well. If your flame shock is about to drop then refreshing it is a priority.

Here is a quick rundown on how it works

1-5 charges: Never use earth shock.
6 charges: If you have 5-6.5 seconds left on flame shock it is OK to drop charges here to make sure you don’t waste charges. At 6 charges the damage is equivalent to a lightning bolt.
7-9 charges: This is when you want to drop charges if you can. The closer to 9 you can get the better.

**Unleash Weapons is currently lackluster for us. Because the spell triggers the GCD the fact that it is instant is not beneficial besides being able to move. Since UE does not have the ability to proc mastery, cannot proc LS charges, and does not reduce the elemental mastery CD the fact that it gives us more LvB damage is moot. If you glyph unleash lightning for the fight this ability serves no purpose.

    AoE rotation

  • Chain Lightning- spamming only this can achieve great numbers in AoE potential.
  • Magma Totem- If it makes sense to plant a magma totem (or possibly even fire elemental) then plant one in the area the mobs will be AoE'd.
  • Earthquake- Earthquake is still a lackluster skill despite the 4.3 damage buff. However pre-casting it where mobs will spawn is still gravy for you and you should do that. If you have 6+ mobs EQ will always be worth it, otherwise stick to the above.

    F. Professions

For the most part professions are fairly balanced, but let's have a run down on the helpful vs the not so helpful ones.

First things first: Anyone who is a min/max kind of player will know two crafting professions > a gathering profession. Let's start with the three gathering professions (the not so helpful ones), but otherwise these are not ranked in any order. If you are a casual player who does some raiding, but mainly dungeons having two crafted professions is not needed

    Gathering professions

    1) Herbalism

DPS Benefit: Lifeblood (480 haste for 20 seconds, 2 minute cooldown)
Description: This, last time I checked, equaled out to be about ~80 static haste if you use it every cooldown. As far as gathering professions go this is our *best* gathering profession we can get, but it’s still pretty weak.

    2) Skinning

DPS Benefit: Master of Anatomy (80 critical strike rating)
Description: While this is a DPS gain it is a minuscule gain, and not worthwhile for dps.

    3) Mining

    DPS Benefits: None
Description: Since mining gives stamina there is no dps gain here.

    Crafting Professions

    1) Blacksmithing

DPS Benefits: You gain an extra socket in your bracers, and one in your gloves. This gives us an extra two Brilliant Inferno Ruby for 80 extra intellect.
Side Benefits: You get to make yourself belt buckles.
Description: A lot of people like to go blacksmithing and jewelcrafting as it offers a wide variety of flexibility for people who play more than one role in their raids.

    2) Leatherworking

DPS Benefit: Draconic Embossment - intellect (130 intellect) to your bracers. This works out to be 80 extra intellect.

    3) Inscription

DPS Benefit: Felfire Inscription (130 intellect and 25 haste). This works out to be 80 extra intellect...again. You also don't have to grind to exalted with Therazane.

    4) Alchemy

DPS Benefits: A 2 hour flask with an extra 80 intellect, and access to Vibrant Alchemist Stone for pre-raiding.

    5) Jewelcrafting

DPS Benefits: You are given three gems called Chimera's Eye and since you will turn them into Brilliant Chimera's Eye this works out to be 81 extra intellect. They also get the very nice trinket Figurine - Jeweled Serpent that is also fairly competitive with other raid trinkets. It will end up getting replaced by heroic raid content at the latest though.

    6) Enchanting

DPS Benefit: +40 intellect to each ring. This works out to be 80 extra intellect.
Side Benefits: Shard your own items

    7) Engineering

DPS Benefits: Synapse Springs, Grounded Plasma Shield, Nitro Boosts.
Descrition: Engineering has several perks, but they aren’t straightforward like other professions. The noticeable dps gain from engineering is the 480 use from synapse spring that attaches to your gloves AND CAN STACK WITH AN ENCHANT…and for the icing the ability has a mere 1 minute cooldown. This is a pretty sexy bonus. It is highly suggested to macro this use into your abilities to have a high uptime for this bonus.

The other nice bonus engineering brings is an 18k shield or a speed boost that attaches to your belt AND STACKS WITH A BELT BUCKLE.

    3. Stepping into 85 content

Now that you’ve hit 85, figured out your spec, glyphs, enchanting, stat priority, and priority system it’s time to start the actual gearing so you can see the content you want. Acquiring gear is mainly done through a ladder process starting from normal dungeons to heroic dungeons to raids to heroic raids, but there is side stuff you should be doing while you gear up that can help get you ready for the next level of content.

    A. Reputations to max, and why

The biggest thing you will do to gear yourself up after hitting 85 is spam dungeons to gear yourself out in justice point gear, as well as to start accumulating valor point gear. Before you start you do make sure you grab the tabard of a faction that you should work on. Here is a list of the reputations you should work on, how far to go, and why. As a general rule I’m not listing friendly reputation since that’s when you get access to the tabard.

    Guardians of Hyjal

Not to be confused with the AVENGERS of Hyjal this reputation gives us a couple of goodies. If you quest in Hyjal you will get yourself into honored by the time you are finished making this a quick and easy reputation to work on.

    Honored: [Cloak of the Dryads
Revered: Arcanum of Hyjal; Wilderness Legguards

You can stop at revered as nothing from exalted is worth getting as elemental.

    Therazane

Therazane is a reputation found in the questing zone of Deepholm, and is a reputation you will want to max. If memory serves you can work your way far into honored by questing out Deepholm which makes this reputation fairly quick to max as well.

Honored: Lesser Inscription of Charged Lodestone
    Revered: Diamant's Ring of Temperance
Exalted: Greater Inscription of Charged Lodestone

    Dragonmaw

I really don’t suggest bothering with Dragonmaw anymore and here’s why: With the release of the molten front dailies about 20 minutes of the beginner quests will unlock a vendor that will sell you Nightweaver's Amulet which has perfect itemization for us. The only big item here in Dragonmaw is Yellow Smoke Pendant (Alliance: Lightning Flash Pendant), and it’s not as well itemized. There is an honored helm which is Helm of the Brown Lands (Alliance: Helm of the Skyborne), but it’s not itemized well either. Pick it up if it’s an upgrade and you’re already honored with Dragonmaw/Wildhammer, otherwise you don’t really have to bother with this faction

Overall I would rank Therazane and Guardians of Hyjal the most important reps to focus on since it’s going to be a slightly longer grind than the Defenders of Hyjal grind (provided you did the Hyjal quest zone).

There other two reputations left are The Earthen Ring and Ramkahen, but I do not suggest working on those reputations for gear. It is more important to work on either Therazane or Defenders first. The reason being is that throughout the gearing process of running dungeons you will be able to replace any gear you get from either of the two factions. Neither faction gives an epic quality item that you can use, and only Ramkahen gives a decent ilevel 346 belt, but it too can easily be replaced.

    B. Molten front daily quest hub

The Molten Front is the new daily quest hub for the expansion and yields some decent rewards for working through the quest zones. The hub, like the past expansion’s quest hubs, start out with a few daily quests, and as you progress you unlock more dailies, and more gear along with it.

Now before I start out I will put it sort of blatantly: Getting gear from the Molten Front dailies is actually a pretty big grind. At the rate at which you can gear up it may not be worth it if you’re taking the game pretty serious. By the time you can acquire gear from this hub you may already have outgrown the gear from doing FL, or the new dungeons/raids available in 4.3. Regardless if you are more casual and prefer questing/light dungeoning to hardcore loots the Molten Front quest hub is for you.

To give some background on how to get started the quest hub starts at the Sanctuary of Malorne, and after about 20 minutes of slaying some bad guys, and watching Hamuul Runetotem get burned to a delicious looking crisp you can enter the Molten Front to get cracking at some dailies.

At the start you can only purchase items from Zen’Vorka, a troll located in the cave in the Molten Front. The only item of worth that he offers you is the Nightweaver's Amulet. Pick that up.

Otherwise the daily hub is something you can do at your leisure, or grind every day for more gear. You must unlock both the druids of the talon, and Shadow Wardens and then you will be forced to do even more dailies to unlock gear. I will list the rest of the available gear and where they come from.

    Filling up the Moonwell

Relic of Elune's Light- This is a well itemized relic, but the 378 justice point relic is better making this obsolete. Still if you wish to save yourself the valor points for other gear you can get this one as a slightly downgraded filler until you get other important purchases

Moonwell Chalice- A good pick-me-up trinket. It’s on use which is a really not nice, but does give you more control.

Globe of Moonlight- This is not an item I would particularly recommend, but if it’s better than what you have armor isn’t a factor in PvE so you can use this.

    Calling the Ancients

Spirit Fragment Band- This ring has crit and mastery which doesn’t make it very good. There are better options out there for you.

    Additional Armaments

Fiery Treads- These boots are perfectly itemized for us, and a yellow socket isn’t bad either, nor is the socket bonus.

    C. Other gear to look out for

    i. Justice/Valor Gear

In 4.3 the Justice and Valor gear has been updated! So let’s take a look at our new gear!

    Justice Point Gear

The Justice Point gear is now the old Valor so it’s been around awhile but let’s go over it anyway.

Helm- Erupting Volcanic Headpiece (tier token required)

    Neck- Firemind Pendant

Shoulders- Erupting Volcanic Shoulderwraps (tier token required)

    Chest- Erupting Volcanic Hauberk

    Bracer- Bracers of Misting Ash
These bracers are still BoE, and should be going fairly cheap on your server. I highly suggest buying them if you have the funds to save yourself JP.

    Gloves- Erupting Volcanic Gloves

    Leggings- Erupting Volcanic Kilt

    Rings- Crystalline Brimstone Ring
Soothing Brimstone Circle is another option, but it’s not itemized well. You can only have one of the JP rings on at a time, so avoid this one.

    Relic- Soulflame Vial
Singed Plume of Aviana is another choice if you're lacking spirit, but I'd try to avoid it if possible. The other relic is so much nicer.

    Valor Point Gear

The new valor gear is actually a bit different than previous tiers. They’ve added in a slot of gear for everything (save for shoulders/leggings) to help players gear up faster. The trade-off is you can’t get tier without raiding.

    Head- Wolfdream Circlet
A very nice helm that is well-itemized for us. The tier helm beats out in itemization because it’s haste/mastery, but anyone lacking spirit can use this with pride.

Neck- Opal of the Secret Order
Threadlinked Chain is another option, but is poorly itemized. Do not grab this one.

    Cloak- Woundlicker Cover, Nanoprecise Cape
Woundlicker will be the immediate BiS, but after you get the T13 4 piece Nanoprecise will take over.

    Chest- Ghostworld Chestguard
Spirit and crit? Gross, stay away from this.

Bracers- Bracers of the Spectral Wolf
Oh look, more spirit and crit. Shun this piece.

    Gloves- Gloves of Ghostly Dreams
Another well itemized piece of gear. However, as with the helm, the tier gloves are itemized with haste/mastery so only use these if you need more hit.

    Waist- Girdle of Shamanic Fury
A decently itemized piece of gear, spirit and mastery isn’t bad, but there are good stand-in items in DS. I would not prioritize this one as much until you have gotten others and have T13 4 piece.

Boots- Sabatons of the Graceful Spirit
I wish these boots has mastery instead of haste, but they are very well itemized nonetheless, and the gem slots are magnificent. Pick them up or buy them if you have the funds (to save valor)

Rings- Seal of the Grand Architect, Band of Reconstruction
Both rings are good, depending on your stat values depends on which ring you should take. For those who don't simcraft the haste ring is probably your best bet.

Trinkets- Bottled Wishes, Reflection of the Light
Both trinkets are useable, but I’d take the bottled wishes over the reflection. Statically they both give 381 SP if you use it every CD, but the reflection is sub-par since getting hit capped at this level shouldn’t be an issue.

Relic- Mindbender Lens, Lightning Spirit in a Bottle
I don’t suggest taking a relic too quickly, or at all if you have Soulflame Vial. Low priority upgrade is low priority.

    ii. 4.3 Dungeons

    End Time

    Echo of Jaina

Jaina's Staff- The staff is ok, but you can do better.

Ward of Incantations- Haste/mastery? Yes please.

    Echo of Tyrande

Crescent Moon- Remember how I said you can do better? This is how you do it.

    Shared Echo Loot

Echoing Headguard- This headpiece is nicely itemized saved for the sad gem slot bonus. Reforge off the spirit if you don’t need it.

    Murozond

Distortion Greaves- Another item ridiculed by crit. You can do better than these. Specifically through the T12 leggings.

    Well of Eternity

    Peroth’arn

Horned Band- Don’t bother with this ring unless it’s a high ilevel upgrade. You can do better than crit.

Orb of the first satyrs- Blizzard won’t let me link it yet, but it’s a hit/haste off-hand. Nicely itemized, but there is a nicer shield from Jaina in End Time.

    Queen Azshara

Scepter of Azshara- This mace is ok, but grab the one off Tyrande in End time instead.

    Mannoroth

Foul Gift of the Demon Lord- This trinket is a nice upgrade over Necromantic Focus, and good in general. Grab it if you can.

Demonsbane Chestguard- An ok chest that is once again loaded with crit. I’d avoid it since you can get the T12 chest which is much nicer.

    Hour of Twilight

    Acurion

Surestride Boots- Greatly itemized boots with haste/mastery.

    Asira Dawnslayer

Pauldrons of Midnight Whispers- More crit gear with just spirit. Do not want.

    Archbishop Benedictus

Fanged Tentacle- Crit and hit makes this very undesirable. In terms of 1H stick with Tyrande’s weapon.

Stalk of Corruption- Haste and mastery makes this a great staff.

    Trash drops

D*@%%s of the Dragonshrine- Crit and haste makes this an ok cloak, but the hyjal friendly cloak is nicer because of hit rating, and the VP cloak is very nice.

Gauntlets of the Twilight Hour- Pretty bad gloves with crit/spirit, and a blue socket. Try to sell these to a resto shaman.

    iii. 4.3 Craftables

Deathscale Leggings- Haste/mastery, 1 red socket, and 2 yellow? Sad that they aren’t all red, but delicious item is delicious anyways! Craft one up and enjoy.

Thundering Deathscale Wristguards- Haste with a side of spirit and 2 red sockets with 20 intellect as a socket bonus...pure win.

    iv. BiS Raiding Gear

    Normal Raiding BiS list

    Head- Spiritwalker's Headpiece
    Neck- Petrified Fungal Heart
Shoulders- Imperfect Specimens 27 and 28
    Cloak- Nanoprecise Cape
    Chest- Spiritwalker's Hauberk
    Bracers- Grotesquely Writhing Bracers
    Gloves- Spiritwalker's Gloves
    Waist- Belt of Shattered Elementium
    Leggings- Spiritwalker's Kilt
    Feet- Mindstrainer Treads
Ring #1- Ring of the Riven
    Ring #2- Signet of Suturing
Trinket #1- Insignia of the Corrupted Mind
    Trinket #2- Will of Unbinding
Relic- Lightning Spirit in a Bottle

*1H Weapon- Rathrak, the Poisonous Mind
    *Off-Hand- Ledger of Revolting Rituals
*Staff- Ti'tahk, the Steps of Time

Legendary- Dragonwrath, Tarecgosa's Rest (Obviously BiS if you get it)

    Heroic Raiding BiS list

    Head- Spiritwalker's Headpiece
    Neck- Petrified Fungal Heart
Shoulders- Imperfect Specimens 27 and 28
    Cloak- Nanoprecise Cape
    Chest- Spiritwalker's Hauberk
    Bracers- Grotesquely Writhing Bracers
    Gloves- Spiritwalker's Gloves
    Waist- Belt of Shattered Elementium
    Leggings- Spiritwalker's Kilt
    Feet- Mindstrainer Treads
Ring #1- Ring of the Riven
    Ring #2- Signet of Suturing
Trinket #1- Insignia of the Corrupted Mind
    Trinket #2- Will of Unbinding
Relic- Lightning Spirit in a Bottle

*1H Weapon- Rathrak, the Poisonous Mind
    *Off-Hand- Ledger of Revolting Rituals
*Staff- Ti'tahk, the Steps of Time

Legendary- Dragonwrath, Tarecgosa's Rest (Obviously BiS if you get it)

*Rathrak vs Ti'tahk points to Ti'tahk right now. AoE fights will greatly favor Rathrak though (such as black phase on Unsleeping).

**Also note BiS lists are subject to change. I've gone off my gut instinct on some of this. Specifically with the normal BiS loot I'm thinking neither craftables are needed, but I could be proven wrong.

    Trinket BiS List

    1. Will of Unbinding
    2. Will of Unbinding
    3. Will of Unbinding
    4. Cunning of the Cruel
    5. Insignia of the Corrupted Mind
    6. Variable Pulse Lightning Capacitor
    7. Cunning of the Cruel
    8. Insignia of the Corrupted Mind
    9. Necromantic Focus
    10. Cunning of the Cruel
    11. Insignia of the Corrupted Mind
    12. Variable Pulse Lightning Capacitor
    13. Foul Gift of the Demon Lord
    14. Bottled Wishes
    15. Necromantic Focus

**Please keep in mind that trinkets are simmed with HBiS gear. Therefore YMMV. The best answer is always to sim it.**

    4. Fine-tuning yourself and preparing for raiding

This is it. The final preparations you need to take before you start raiding. There are several points that need to be gone over.

    A. Useful addons

Addons are a huge deal when it comes to raiding. A cluttered UI that does that is hard to understand, and obstructs your view is no good. Addons can also help you achieve the maximum potential you can from your rotation as well as many other things. There are a wide variety of addons you can use, and it’s up to you on which ones you want to use, but I mainly will be going over my UI/addons, as well as listing some other good addons.

    First, my UI: http://img849.imageshack.us/img849/8484/wowscrnshot120411192705.jpg

Forgive it a little bit. With Patch 4.3 my UI is a bit out of whack (mainly Elvui) with some addons acting up, but this is the general layout. Let’s go over the addons I’m using.

  • Elvui/Tukui- I use Elvui as it’s a lot more noob friendly, but it’s great for organizing your UI and clearing up space.
  • Shieldsup- I use this addon for tracking lightning shield charges. Gives me a quick update on my shield charges when under 7.
  • Grid- The raid frames I have located in the bottom-right side of my screen. Just a nice way to see player/class health. Not needed anymore, but I prefer grid for raid frames.
  • Power auras- This one takes a bit more to explain, so let’s go over it bit by bit
  • There are two parts to my PAs, the stuff you see in the bottom middle of the screen, and the intellect proc trackers you see on the far right side.

    Auras

  • An aura that tracks the time remaining on flame shock on my current target
  • Two auras make up this part. One will pop up when EM is ready, and the other will show me time remaining on the extra haste/damage portion of EM.
  • Same as EM, but for berserking. If you use my auras replace it with your racial if you have one (or delete it if you don’t).
  • Tracks my lava burst CD. When it’s available lava burst will pop up.
  • The buff you can when lava surge procs with T12 4 piece. When I see this I know I can cast LvB and move at the same time.
  • This part of auras is made up by 3 different ones that work together.
When I have 6 or less charges a shield is not displayed
When I have 7 charges a green lightning shield is displayed
When I have 8 charges a yellow lightning shield is displayed
When I have 9 charges a red lightning shield is displayed (And I’m a baddy)
  • This aura tracks thunderstorm's CD. Not really needed, but nice to see if the fight calls for thunderstorm.
  • These auras track which fire totem I have down as well as the time remaining.
  • The auras on the far right are my intellect procs.
  • These are auras I use to watch for intellect procs for volcanic pots, power torrent, and my engineering synapse springs. They are kind of off-center right now, but I’m too lazy to care/fix them.

    Other addons

  • Elementarist- An addon I’ve never used before but have heard good things about for elemental shamans
  • Totem Timers- Another addon I’ve never used, but have also heard good things about.
  • DBM/Bigwigs- Tracks boss mechanics for you.
  • Recount- Bragging rights when you top the meter.
  • Bartender- A nice addon for managing bars. I used this for a long time until I discovered Tukui/Elvui.
  • Atlasloot- Find loot to gurgle over

    Power Auras Export

After downloading power auras open the power auras menu (/powa) click import set on the power auras menu. Past the below in and you will get my auras. B. Consumables

There are several consumables you should be bringing.

    Flask of the Draconic Mind
    Severed Sagefish Head
    Volcanic Potion

I suggest bringing all of these to a raid.

Also note that mark of the wild/kings is going to affect flask and severed fish head. this translates into a total 410 int as opposed to 390 int. And a volcanic potion is actually 1260 intellect instead.

    C. Helpful Macros

Macros have a great usefulness because they can accomplish things that would otherwise be very hard if not impossible.

Thanks for Yoda for the first four macros listed (hex, bind elemental, purge, and wind shear) as he gave me the proper format. Shift is the modifier used, but you can change it to any modifier you want.

What macros A-D do for is checks if you have a focus, if not it will cast the macro'd ability on your target and make it your focus. After that you can continue to target something else, and until your focus dies or you press shift it will keep casting on your focus w/o changing targets.

    Bind Elemental

    #showtooltip [target=focus, harm] [] Bind Elemental
    /clearfocus [modifier:shift] [target=focus, dead] [target=focus, noexists]
    /focus [target=focus, noexists]
    /cast [target=focus] Bind Elemental

    Hex

    #showtooltip [target=focus, harm] [] Hex
    /clearfocus [modifier:shift] [target=focus, dead] [target=focus, noexists]
    /focus [target=focus, noexists]
    /cast [target=focus] Hex

    Wind Shear

    #showtooltip [target=focus, harm] [] Wind Shear
    /clearfocus [modifier:shift] [target=focus, dead] [target=focus, noexists]
    /focus [target=focus, noexists]
    /cast [target=focus] Wind Shear

    Purge

    #showtooltip [target=focus, harm] [] Purge
    /clearfocus [modifier:shift] [target=focus, dead] [target=focus, noexists]
    /focus [target=focus, noexists]
    /cast [target=focus] Purge

    "Use ability" Macro

Below is a macro shown with lightning bolt, but it can be used with any spell you want as well. Initially when you combine trinkets with an ability in a macro you will continuously hear "item isn't ready yet" With the below in place that will no longer be the case.

    #showtooltip Lightning Bolt
    /console Sound_EnableSFX 0
    /script UIErrorsFrame:Clear()
    /console Sound_EnableSFX 1
    /use 10
    /use 13
    /use 14
    /cast Lightning Bolt

*/use 10 will use your gloves if you are an engineer with the tinkerer*

    D. Are you ready to raid?

So now we get to the part where you ask yourself if you’re ready to raid. There are several things you need to ask yourself

  • Am I hit capped? You should be at no less than 17%
  • Am I enchanted, specced, glyphed, and geared properly?
  • Do I understand the priority system and can follow it?
  • Do I have maxed professions (Show every bit of effort!)
  • Do I have all my consumables with me or are they at least provided by someone else?

            • These are the main questions you must ask yourself before you step into a raid. Don’t be that guy in the raid group that doesn’t push him to the limit to maximize his character. If you’re just doing a for fun alt raid, that’s one thing, but you should always take your mainly character seriously.

If you’ve taken this guide seriously from start to finish you should be able to answer the above questions with a strong yes, and be well on your way to receiving phat lootz (and maybe a legendary stomeday!).

This is the guide conclusion. May lightning bolts be lightningy, and your flame shock ticks proc lava surge.
