4.3 Elemental PvE Guide: The Perfect Thunderstorm
To weed out a little bit of the confusion- Yes I xferred to Zul'jin Hello Shaman Community, and welcome to an updated Elemental PvE guide for Patch 4.3! The purpose of this guide is to give beginner elemental shamans a good start on where to begin, as well as teach the ready-to-raid players how to maximize their potential. This guide is unlike my guides in the past. Before I stated they were for raiding, but this will be much broader than that. Over my career of forum cruising it came to my realization that new players may be intimidated by seeing a raiding guide, and think it’s above what they should be learning. It is for that reason that I have redone the guide. The raiding information provided by guide is still here, but I hope that this guide layout will be a lot more beneficial for players of all skill/content level. That being said this guide is still intended for level 85 PvE orientated players who want to push raid content. Correcting/updating this guide- I ask that if anyone finds any bad, unclear, misleading or information I may have left out that you please notify me so that I can make changes. ***A special thanks to everyone on the shaman forum that helps put out good Elemental Shaman information. While I get a lot of credit for putting guides up this wouldn't be doable without the help of others, especially from the mathematical standpoint. Binkenstein, and Moshne, though not avid WoW forum posters, do a lot of work over at EJ/totemspot. At the WoW forum standpoint Gistwiki also helps out drastically. Don't forget to /love them*** Table of Contents |

1. Introduction to being an elemental shamanSo the first thing you need to understand about your spec is what the purpose of your spec is, and if it is right for you. The elemental shaman is a ranged caster that specializes predominately in nature, with a side of fire, and a very light touch of frost. Since you are a caster being far away from your target is best. You have no obligation to be in melee contact, and you want to keep away from them as much as possible. For PvE dungeons/raids this isn’t a huge deal since your tank should be holding the threat on the mobs anyways. To start off the beginner shamans we are going to take a look at the important PvE spells you want to use. A. Important Spells Damage Spells Damage spells are quite simply spells that deal damage in one way shape or form for you. Just because they deal damage though doesn’t mean they’re good, or that you should use them every chance you get. More will be covered on how to use these spells to the best of their ability later on. Lightning bolt Chain lightning Flame Shock Lava Burst Earth Shock Lightning shield Unleash Weapon Elemental Mastery Utility spells Utility spells are used to assist you in combat but not deal damage. These are spells such as damage absorbs, slows, roots, or crowd control, and an elemental shaman brings a good range of utility spells to the game. B. Using your totems
Totems! Totems! Totems! …Totems! Totems are unique to the shaman class as they provide powerful buffs to us and our party/raid, and utilizing them is of utmost importance. However a lot of classes now bring the same buffs so sometimes you will find that there is not a ton of variety to bring with your totems, and you may have to change up your typical totem drops from time to time. This section will mainly go over which totems you should typically use, and which ones you should use situationally. C. Gearing and stat values
The next two big things you need to understand is what to look for in gear which mainly means what stats we want to stack, or more importantly; avoid. Stats have two categories: main, and secondary. Main stats Main stats are intellect, strength, agility, and spirit. Let’s rank them. 1) Spirit/hit rating 2) Intellect 3) Stamina Unranked) Strength/agility Secondary Stats Secondary stats are stats that boost our damage, but not directly like a main stat will, and therefore that makes some of them good, and some of them not so good. While I will rank them below this is a very crucial bit of information: Haste and mastery are very similar in terms of a DPS gain, read carefully over the next posts covering stats because there is only a general answer, and not a straightforward one. 1) Haste 2) Mastery 3) Critical Strike Rating Gearing A properly geared elemental shaman will kick some serious butt in PvE whereas an improperly geared elemental shaman will cause other classes to come to our forum and whine about how pathetic we are. There are several key things you should be aware of.
Keep these things in mind and you’re on the right track. Return to Table of Contents: http://us.battle.net/wow/en/forum/topic/3657431793?page=1#1 |

2. Making the most out of your DPSMin/maxing is an important aspect that is required out of your character. Taking your character to the fullest can make a huge difference. As someone who frequents the forums often (on multiple classes) I see a lot of people complaining that their damage is low when they haven’t put the effort into their character like they should have, and after some tutoring they end up realizing how big of a difference it made. The first place you should start with your character is the stats on his gear. A. Stat priority The general rule is: Hit/spirit (until cap) > Haste > Mastery >>>> Crit Hit rating scale Haste vs Mastery A very common debate people like to have is whether haste or mastery is a stronger secondary stat. The answer, as stated above, is that haste has typically been our strongest stat, and odds are that you can safely invest in haste over mastery and be correct. That being said it is not always the case, and if you truly want to know which stat is better there is only one answer, "Sim it". Yes people, this means you WILL have to do work. Sorry folks, we can't do it all for you. *Sadface* To get you started on simcraft start here: http://www.totemspot.com/vb/showthread.php?t=6338 Now, outside of learning how to use simcraft, and simming yourself there are several key points you can also take into account to put you in the general direction on whether haste or mastery is stronger for you. As Gistwiki points out: 1) T13-4pc: This bonus doesn't devalue haste, but it does increase the value of Mastery. B. Speccing and glyphing
Speccing and glyphing is another important aspect of the class you must grasp if you plan on going anywhere in the game. How to Properly Spec Here our skeleton elemental spec: http://www.wowhead.com/talent#hhGMGRfkzGZbhM You have 3 talent points left over. Viable options include: Earthquake Convection Elemental warding Totemic Reach Ancestral Resolve Spark of life EQ is not needed on every fight so it can be situational to have it. Convection, while considered a DPS talent since it will increase your mana efficiency, is an extremely weak talent since we have no mana problems unless you die and reincarnate, and even then we are so efficient with mana it serves little purpose. A fresh 85 may want to use this if they AoE, but shortly after gearing up you can ignore this talent completely. Elemental warding is spell damage mitigation which gives you 4% damage reduction per point (maximum of 3 points). This talent is nice for PvE since most raid wide damage will be magical, and very rarely physical. Totemic Reach is a luxury, but it's not really needed. Ancestral resolve and Spark of Life are two talents in the restoration tree that increase your survivability. You can't max both at the same time though, but both are strong talents to have. Earth's grasp is good on a fight that has AoE and you need to control adds, such as nef P1/P3. It's mainly a PvP talent that serves very little purpose in PvE. Max DPS Spec: http://www.wowhead.com/talent#hhGMGRfkzGZboZbhb The above is a max DPS spec that disregards movement in the encounter. While the spec may seem silly at first for going so deep into the resto tree the reason being is because totemic focus increases the duration of the fire elemental, which is actually a DPS increase even when you lose 2 points in improved shields. This spec is fairly situational, so don't make this your main elemental spec. Glyphing Glyphing is another aspect that you should understand when playing any class as there are many glyphs out there that are not beneficial even though they look appealing and can sway you away from critical glyphs that you must have. i. Prime Required- Flame shock is required. More uptime on flame shock means less refreshing and more earth shocks. This also means you will have less of a chance to having flame shock and earth shock conflictions when you need to refresh flame shock, but also have too many charges of lightning shield. Unleashed Lightning, fire elemental, lightning bolt, and lava burst are all thrown up in the air. Unleashed lightning- This is a great glyph for heavy movement fights. Any fight that requires heavy movement makes this glyph a must have. For dungeons it is not nearly as essential, but certainly handy. Lightning bolt, and Lava burst are straight DPS increases. Lightning bolt is considered the staple, but lava burst gains ground over it in FL gear and our 4 piece bonus. Generally if you don’t have the T12 4 piece then use lightning bolt, and if you have the T12 4 piece use Lava burst. Glyph of fire elemental- This glyph is a good DPS increase if the fight allow multiple FE drops throughout the fight, however the fight needs to last at least 7-8 minutes for it to be worthwhile. In that situation you would drop it at the beginning of the fight, and again near the end of the fight. The closer the fight lasts to when you could drop the fire elemental the better it gets compared to other glyphs. For example: if the fight lasts 7-8 minutes it’s a good DPS increase. However if the fight lasts 9-10 minutes it loses value because the glyph is doing nothing for you for those last 2-3 minutes whereas LB/LvB glyph would have done you work. ii. Major Required: Besides the lightning shield glyph all major glyphs break down into personal preference, and what the raid comp may need. Personally I like glyph of elemental mastery, and stoneclaw for mitigation purposes. My raid comp is built around not needing healing stream, and I don’t really need the reduced CD on thunderstorm. YMMV iii. Minor Recommended: Thunderstorm can be useful on certain fights and renewed life is a quality of life thing. Sometimes you want the knockback though so be wary of that. The other glyph is a personal choice. Return to Table of Contents: http://us.battle.net/wow/en/forum/topic/3657431793?page=1#1 |

C. Enchanting, and Gemming
Here is a breakdown on gemming. As always I suggest the rare quality gems since they will yield the highest dps gain. Patch 4.3 is on the way and epic gems will be released with it. So far getting epic gems sounds like it will be a royal pain so if you decide to hold onto them until the right gear comes along no one will blame you (except Dream Paragon). Meta: ***If you use an orange gem the socket should be worth it. This is typically any amount of intellect, haste, or mastery. Crit is not going to be worth it. You can also use purple gems to get to the hit cap and a full spirit gem would be wasted. Purple gems should be used when a blue socket is worth the bonus. This is generally any amount of intellect. If the socket bonus is +20 int (or more) then you should ALWAYS gem for int+spirit/int+hit. The reason being is you can get the extra hit rating and 40 int due to the bonus. While the general mindset is to get hit capped without gems there is no advantage to just using a brilliant cut instead, and this way you net yourself hit rating which means you don't have to reforge out of as much haste/mastery/crit*** Enchanting Enchanting is an important thing to do with your gear. It adds up. You may say something like “well if I don’t enchant my weapon it’s JUST a dps loss of 200….or 300”. This is ok logic. If you are the only one in the raid not enchanting a piece of gear it’s not the end of the world. Now tell me what happens if the other 9 (or 24) raid members follow your logic? Exactly. Never skimp out on an enchant. Even if you have to use a lower form of enchant…ALWAYS enchant it. I will list the best enchants available, and alternatives if they exist. Head: *Either the shield or boosts are acceptable. The boots can leak and take out a good chunk of health (80% of current health iirc), and the shield has a chance to increase the chance to be critically hit by 100% or taunt all enemies around you, so it's a pick your poison deal. D. Reforging
So a big question I see on the forums is: REFORGING??? HOW DOES IT WORK? It’s very simple really. The reforging system works off the stat priority system. Take the lowest possible stat you have on it and reforge it to the highest stat (besides intellect as you can’t reforge to it) you can that you need. A simple set of rules to follow: From Elitistjerks Going outside that: You can DL the addon Reforgelite to help you calculate reforging in-game. Be warned though, the preset is set to assume haste > mastery, which has been true for pretty much the entire expansion. Once you gear yourself in DS gear the two start to balance out more, and eventually pushes slightly towards mastery (And even more into Mastery if you get the legendary). Therefore you should be using Simcraft to have stat weights so that you can accurately have it reforge yourself. There are also many other reforging tools out there, but you always want to take precautions with them. Machines do make mistakes, you don't just want to assume it's doing it right. They usually will, but these tools are made by humans, and we do not make everything perfect (See the Leaning Tower...I mean it's crooked, come on). E. The Proper Priority Rotation
The most important thing to a well played DPS class is executing the proper priority system. Have Heroic Deathwing loot, the legendary staff, and your fire elemental up 100% of the time, if you just cast lightning bolt you are only at a fraction of your playing potential. Essentially, even though the name speaks for itself, a priority system is a system where you perform the highest ability on the priority list you can and work your way down to the bottom (or until a higher priority ability is active again). Not following the priority system can severely cripple your damage, and make you look unappealing as a possible raid member. Single target priority system *Earth Shock/Fulmination is a DPS gain over LB at 7 stacks, but you typically want to drop it at 9 if possible, or at least at 8 (this is the “safe” number). You also want to make sure that you don’t let flame shock drop as well. If your flame shock is about to drop then refreshing it is a priority. Here is a quick rundown on how it works 1-5 charges: Never use earth shock. 6 charges: If you have 5-6.5 seconds left on flame shock it is OK to drop charges here to make sure you don’t waste charges. At 6 charges the damage is equivalent to a lightning bolt. 7-9 charges: This is when you want to drop charges if you can. The closer to 9 you can get the better. **Unleash Weapons is currently lackluster for us. Because the spell triggers the GCD the fact that it is instant is not beneficial besides being able to move. Since UE does not have the ability to proc mastery, cannot proc LS charges, and does not reduce the elemental mastery CD the fact that it gives us more LvB damage is moot. If you glyph unleash lightning for the fight this ability serves no purpose. AoE rotation Return to Table of Contents: http://us.battle.net/wow/en/forum/topic/3657431793?page=1#1 |

F. Professions
For the most part professions are fairly balanced, but let's have a run down on the helpful vs the not so helpful ones. First things first: Anyone who is a min/max kind of player will know two crafting professions > a gathering profession. Let's start with the three gathering professions (the not so helpful ones), but otherwise these are not ranked in any order. If you are a casual player who does some raiding, but mainly dungeons having two crafted professions is not needed Gathering professions Crafting Professions Return to Table of Contents: http://us.battle.net/wow/en/forum/topic/3657431793?page=1#1 |

3. Stepping into 85 contentNow that you’ve hit 85, figured out your spec, glyphs, enchanting, stat priority, and priority system it’s time to start the actual gearing so you can see the content you want. Acquiring gear is mainly done through a ladder process starting from normal dungeons to heroic dungeons to raids to heroic raids, but there is side stuff you should be doing while you gear up that can help get you ready for the next level of content. A. Reputations to max, and why The biggest thing you will do to gear yourself up after hitting 85 is spam dungeons to gear yourself out in justice point gear, as well as to start accumulating valor point gear. Before you start you do make sure you grab the tabard of a faction that you should work on. Here is a list of the reputations you should work on, how far to go, and why. As a general rule I’m not listing friendly reputation since that’s when you get access to the tabard. Guardians of Hyjal Therazane Dragonmaw Overall I would rank Therazane and Guardians of Hyjal the most important reps to focus on since it’s going to be a slightly longer grind than the Defenders of Hyjal grind (provided you did the Hyjal quest zone). There other two reputations left are The Earthen Ring and Ramkahen, but I do not suggest working on those reputations for gear. It is more important to work on either Therazane or Defenders first. The reason being is that throughout the gearing process of running dungeons you will be able to replace any gear you get from either of the two factions. Neither faction gives an epic quality item that you can use, and only Ramkahen gives a decent ilevel 346 belt, but it too can easily be replaced. B. Molten front daily quest hub
The Molten Front is the new daily quest hub for the expansion and yields some decent rewards for working through the quest zones. The hub, like the past expansion’s quest hubs, start out with a few daily quests, and as you progress you unlock more dailies, and more gear along with it. Now before I start out I will put it sort of blatantly: Getting gear from the Molten Front dailies is actually a pretty big grind. At the rate at which you can gear up it may not be worth it if you’re taking the game pretty serious. By the time you can acquire gear from this hub you may already have outgrown the gear from doing FL, or the new dungeons/raids available in 4.3. Regardless if you are more casual and prefer questing/light dungeoning to hardcore loots the Molten Front quest hub is for you. To give some background on how to get started the quest hub starts at the Sanctuary of Malorne, and after about 20 minutes of slaying some bad guys, and watching Hamuul Runetotem get burned to a delicious looking crisp you can enter the Molten Front to get cracking at some dailies. At the start you can only purchase items from Zen’Vorka, a troll located in the cave in the Molten Front. The only item of worth that he offers you is the Otherwise the daily hub is something you can do at your leisure, or grind every day for more gear. You must unlock both the druids of the talon, and Shadow Wardens and then you will be forced to do even more dailies to unlock gear. I will list the rest of the available gear and where they come from. C. Other gear to look out for
i. Justice/Valor Gear In 4.3 the Justice and Valor gear has been updated! So let’s take a look at our new gear! Justice Point Gear The Justice Point gear is now the old Valor so it’s been around awhile but let’s go over it anyway. Helm- Valor Point Gear The new valor gear is actually a bit different than previous tiers. They’ve added in a slot of gear for everything (save for shoulders/leggings) to help players gear up faster. The trade-off is you can’t get tier without raiding. Head- Return to Table of Contents: http://us.battle.net/wow/en/forum/topic/3657431793?page=1#1 |

iv. BiS Raiding Gear Normal Raiding BiS list Heroic Raiding BiS list *Rathrak vs Ti'tahk points to Ti'tahk right now. AoE fights will greatly favor Rathrak though (such as black phase on Unsleeping). **Also note BiS lists are subject to change. I've gone off my gut instinct on some of this. 4. Fine-tuning yourself and preparing for raidingThis is it. The final preparations you need to take before you start raiding. There are several points that need to be gone over. A. Useful addons Addons are a huge deal when it comes to raiding. A cluttered UI that does that is hard to understand, and obstructs your view is no good. Addons can also help you achieve the maximum potential you can from your rotation as well as many other things. There are a wide variety of addons you can use, and it’s up to you on which ones you want to use, but I mainly will be going over my UI/addons, as well as listing some other good addons. First, my UI: http://img849.imageshack.us/img849/8484/wowscrnshot120411192705.jpg Forgive it a little bit. With Patch 4.3 my UI is a bit out of whack (mainly Elvui) with some addons acting up, but this is the general layout. Let’s go over the addons I’m using.

B. Consumables
There are several consumables you should be bringing.
I suggest bringing all of these to a raid. Also note that mark of the wild/kings is going to affect flask and severed fish head. this translates into a total 410 int as opposed to 390 int. And a volcanic potion is actually 1260 intellect instead. Return to Table of Contents: http://us.battle.net/wow/en/forum/topic/3657431793?page=1#1 |

C. Helpful Macros
Thanks for Yoda for the first four macros listed (hex, bind elemental, purge, and wind shear) as he gave me the proper format. Shift is the modifier used, but you can change it to any modifier you want. What macros A-D do for is checks if you have a focus, if not it will cast the macro'd ability on your target and make it your focus. After that you can continue to target something else, and until your focus dies or you press shift it will keep casting on your focus w/o changing targets. D. Are you ready to raid?
If you’ve taken this guide seriously from start to finish you should be able to answer the above questions with a strong yes, and be well on your way to receiving phat lootz (and maybe a legendary stomeday!). This is the guide conclusion. May lightning bolts be lightningy, and your flame shock ticks proc lava surge.
