I just bought the Game of Thrones Book One
|

I heard from a friend if I liked fiction like Lord of the Rings, Abhorsen Trilogy, and the Dune Series that I would like this. Can anyone give me their opinion of the book without too many spoilers?

The honorable thing to do is not always the right thing to do. You know nothing, Jon Snow.

You'll probably love the first book.
Then you'll want to read the second, and you'll love that too, because it's like Book One, Part Two. Then you'll get to book three, and start wondering if anything is going to actually happen. Halfway through book four, you'll seriously begin considering whether these are novels at all, or merely a series of (admittedly engaging) scenes written for the convenience of a miniseries screenwriter. I can't tell you about book five, because I stopped reading halfway through four. :P |

The books are good, enjoyable reads, and I'm pretty confident you'll enjoy them as long as you don't let yourself get too hyped up. You're actually at a perfect place to start reading the series, because you don't have to wait years for the first five books, as so many of us have done.

too, because it's like Book One, Part Two. Oh, plenty of things happen. You just start to wonder where it's all going. Then the next book comes out and the feeling intensifies. Personally, my bets are on Martin shuffling off this mortal coil before it's all done and the fanbase will be left with a Zelazny-esqe "what the...?" state for eternity. |

Don't get to attached to anyone to quickly.

Don't get attached to anyone ever. Martin loves making you like someone then killing them. He's done it so much it's starting to feel gimmicky. |

thats what turned me off. |

That's what keep me coming back for more. |

Poor *spoiler*. Im loving these characters, and then suddenly theyre dead! Kind of makes me mad, but that is what makes a book good. They're very emotionally engaging. |
Actually, this is pretty much a Martin hallmark. He's done it in most of his work. |

Amazing book 1.. good book 2.. and thats as far as it gets.. at least with the wheel of time you got decieved into thinking it was algo good, but at least it lasted 5 books.
Before buying a Dance with Dragons read the reviews at amazon.com, its just another version of crossroads (wheel of time) and by far the worst book I have ever read. |

Finished Book 1...now about half way through Book 2.
Good so far. Have a great day Update March 14. Finished Book 2 and I do not think I will be buying book 3 anytime soon. My interests have changed. |

Yeah Martin kills at least 60% of the viewpoint characters (those characters with their own chapters) that he introduces.
I'm fine with it. I'm so wrapped up in the new characters that the old ones who have been killed off don't bother me too much. It's like when Steve Carrell left The Office. Sure I loved Michael Scott, but the show is still hilarious because the writers are all still there. |

I'm just havin trouble gettin into it honestly. The constant view point switchin is...difficult and feels very much like I'm readin a script for a tv show. Viewpoint ends, quick pan to the right to change viewpoint to character 2! 15 pages or 2 minutes of screen time later, fade to black for viewpoint of character 3!
I like everythin about all of the characters. They're intriguin and interestin and all that, but I have so much trouble even rememberin whats goin on because it switches so much and then goes back to someone we haven't talked about in a hundred pages. If I read it all at once it'd prolly be easier, but like...readin 20-30 pages a day? Nuh uh...aint happenin. |

Well, the easiest explanation is that Martin has a decent amount of Hollywood experience and that colors how he writes. He was a head writer (and producer, I think?) for Beauty and the Beast back in the '80s. He did other work and dabbled in novel/novella/short story writing. And then he pictured a dying she-wolf with her throat pierced by a stag's antler, with pups nursing at her still-cooling corpse, and history was made. Getting used to the viewpoint switching is an acquired taste. I thought it was refreshing compared to other fantasy works that it focuses on an entire orchestra rather than just first cello or brass. I'll admit that it might be easier to follow if you make a flowchart showing how the different viewpoints are interrelated. A quick and dirty summary is if you like WoT, you'd like SoIaF. Tyrion's a badass who needs a hug. |

Currently halfway through book 4. So far, I am quite pleased I got involved in the series. It is bitter sweet where some of your favorite characters die, but the story is just so rich. I am also a fan of the whole viewpoint thing Martin has going. On a side note, April 1st is just weeks away!

I actually saw the books on my vacations in Miami and decided to buy them. and I don't regret it. like, at all.
Yes, it has some, ehem, kind of "mature content" but I totally enjoyed them, i even spent 36 hours awake only trying to finish book one. And the TV series, you are gonna love them. For me at least, it's like the twisted sex-oriented cousin of TLOTR xD! (and yes, I love it ♥) |

Can anyone give me their opinion of the book without too many spoilers? *!@%, incest, murder, politics, betrayal, war, hatred, survival, despotism, ridiculous body count, ancient evils unleashed on the world once more. Very high quality dark fantasy, basically. Winter is coming. |
