[Mac] 64-bit PTR Client

(Locked)

Support Forum Agent
Greetings Mac Community,

A 64-bit client for Mac is now available for use with the 4.3.2 PTR. You can download it at the link below, unzip it into your PTR directory, and then run the executable to test it.

  • The 64-bit client is being distributed separately from the PTR as it is not yet supported for use with World of Warcraft.
  • The 64-bit client will not work with the live version of the game (4.3.0). This is exclusively for the PTR client.
  • [Mac] The 64-bit Mac client does not currently support the in-game movie recording functionality.
  • [Mac] The 64-bit Mac client iTunes' Remote feature does not work at the present time.
  • [Mac] The 64-bit Mac client does not currently support the customized LCD display for the Logitech G15 series of keyboards.
  • [Mac] The 64-bit Mac client is currently not supported on 10.5 systems. You will need 10.6.8 or later for this version.
  • The game’s built in voice chat does not currently work in the 64-bit client.

  • If you encounter any issues while using the 64-bit version, please report your findings in the the Mac forums, the PTR bug report forum http://us.battle.net/wow/en/forum/2359401/), or email wowmacteam123@blizzard.com and return to using the 32-bit executable.

You can toggle this option in the PTR Launcher menu options under Options>Game Preferences and check "Launch 32-bit client"

Your PTR folder should look like this when done properly

    http://www.mysticalos.com/wow64mac.jpg

With the file extracted along side your 32 bit wow just like that, in an already fully installed ptr client patched up to current version. If you are not already running latest PTR you need to download and install it first, then fully patch it up to 4.3.2 build 15201. Downloading the above file by itself will not function on it's own.

Some additional info about what a 64 app actually is:
    http://developer.apple.com/library/mac/#documentation/Darwin/Conceptual/64bitPorting/intro/intro.html

    This one is particularlly interesting

    Performance-Critical Applications
If your application is performance critical, you might want to recompile your application as a 64-bit executable, particularly on Intel-based Macintosh computers.

Here’s why. The 64-bit Intel architecture contains additional CPU registers that are not available when compiling a 32-bit Intel executable. For example, the 64-bit architecture has 16 general-purpose integer registers instead of 8. Because of the extra register space, the first few arguments are passed in registers instead of on the stack. Thus, by compiling some applications as 64-bit, you may improve performance because the code generates fewer memory accesses on function calls. As a general rule, 64-bit Intel executables run somewhat more quickly unless the increased code and data size interact badly (performance-wise) with the CPU cache.

    omm nom nom

but also to note as i've mentionened before, this
    Memory Requirements
The memory usage of a 64-bit application may be significantly larger than for a 32-bit version of the same application. The difference in usage varies from application to application depending on what percentage of data structures contain data members that are larger in a 64-bit process. For this reason, on a computer with a small amount of memory, you may not want to run the 64-bit version of your application even if the computer can support it.
^ this isn't a lie either, just look at this comparison of just UI mods. Granted not all functions will see this much inflation as the lua memory. However, you can expect variations across the board of everything requiring more memory.

Gonna fly around the world with my usual settings and see how it feels.

My addon memory usage went up, sure... from 2MB to 3MB, haha.

The issue with latency not showing up is fixed. I'm getting 28ms! PTR must be somewhere in CA.

After doing a long tour of Uldum with both clients, they both seemed to be fairly similar in terms of raw FPS. Neither went below 25fps, neither above 70fps. The 64-bit client usually sat between 40 and 50, the 32-bit client seemed to be more between 35 and 45. My measurements weren't scientific or anything, just constantly staring and numbers and getting a feel for where things were in both clients. The highs and lows were in the same usual areas where I expected FPS outliers.

Both clients seem to like to make my cursor race again when I first open and close the game. I thought it was fixed in the previous build, but maybe I was wrong. Not a huge deal.

I for some reason cant run the game in 64 bit mode without removing the 32 bit worldofwarcraft.app from the PTR directory.

your launcher is probably configed to use 32 bit app then. did you go into launcher game settings and uncheck "32 bit"?

When I run "World of Warcraft-64", it creates the following folders and hangs up: Data/, Errors/, Logs/, and WTF/.

sounds like you didn't follow the instructions at all, you are running it without properly installing int into an existing patched up PTR folder first. it's crashing because it's being improperly run from no valid wow folder

your launcher is probably configed to use 32 bit app then. did you go into launcher game settings and uncheck "32 bit"?

I did and I get the error message.

"This beta 64-bit version of World of Warcraft does not match the installed version of the game. You must acquire a new 64-bit version, or instead use the 32-bit version"

If I remove the 32 bit executable from the folder, the 64 bit version runs fine. I can even confirm that the 64 bit is running as the activity Monitor Identifies it as "Intel (64 bit)" and the program is labeled as World of Warcraft Test 64

ah, i suggest removing the 64 bit version from folder leave 32 bit one there, then run launcher, it sounds like for some reason your ptr client isn't up to date yet. and if the 64 bit app is there, it doesn't try to udpate the 32 bit one, since 64 bit one is up to date.

this won't be a problem when 64 isn't distributed seperately. but it sounds like before you do anything wth 64 bit app, remove it from folder, and fully update ptr 32 bit client first. if it says "up to date" it's probably already confused from already running 64 bit client, delete launcher.wtf from wtf folder, then rerun it, and make sure it updates the 32 bit app properly. then add the 64 bit one back into folder. see if it resolves problem

Oh that fixed it. I could of swore that I fully updated before I installed it

Actually I did both, I ran it from outside my PTR directory, because the first time I ran it inside the PTR directory it hung and didn't produce any error log.

Now it seems to be working, but when I press Cmd-Opt-Esc and see "World of Warcraft-64" in red followed by "not responding", it doesn't give me warm and fuzzies.

"World of Warcraft-64" is kind of flaky and doesn't operate like a nice normal app, but I guess it works if you let it sit for a few minutes.

actually it maybe something else now that i think about it. Can you do me a favor and post what your system information says under "software" after going to apple menu holding option key and choose system information/profiler

remove serial number. i suspect the problem could be No GX Device Created, because you're booted in a 32 bit kernel, thus have 32 bit video drivers and not 64 bit ones loaded? i'm not sure if wow 64 requires the kernel booted into 64 bit mode or not.

also make apsolute sure ptr client is FULLY downloaded, don't just stop it when play is lit up, wait until it is 100% and "up to date"

Will the 64-bit client release along with 4.3.2? I wouldn't mind testing it, but I really don't feel like downloading the PTR client to my already-crowded HD. If so, I can provide feedback once 4.3.2 hits live.

My personal (and uninformed opinion), i doubt it. PTR was tagged as a release canidate. yet the 64 bit client is very much beta and tagged as a test client with a slew of known issues.
The primary concern and focus for 4.3.2 is clearly bugfixes, and there is no shortage of them on mac. This client fixes keyboard problems, latency display problem, even a crash problem or two. 64bit client isn't a bugfix, not to mention the cross platform issues like user interface settings being reset to defaults on logout (language filter, debuff settings, etc).

If it comes down to shipping a bunch of bugfixes now asap, or waiting on 64 bit client, I can imagine they will send 32 out by itself. But we'll just have to wait and see. If iti does come out, it'll by no means be default or recommended for less techinical users until it's flushed out more.

Please excuse me for my IT ignorance but, what are we going to be benefiting from a 64bit platform?

    See post 3.

basically, a minor speed increase depending on your 64 bit hardware and if you're actually running your kernel in 64 bit mode. and the ability to address more memory going forward, which may be relevent in MoP

With 4.3.2 going live soon and the 64 bit client still needing testing, Will the PTR stay up to continue testing it or will we be able to test it on Live servers with a "Use at your own risk" disclaimer?
