Question to the Higher ups (new models)

well I have spent the last 90 days thinking if at all I should come back to wow cause of the line in the sand. I mean They tell US as a hole who Pay to play that they are working on things and all. But I spent the week before i dropped my $63.13 on Delx MOP. I been at this game for so long and things they say they do they have yet to be done. I pay about $21 something for 30 days of play time but I have to get the 60 day game time card so that about $40 something. In the last few days having to redo password and stuff. The $13 spent on that key chain was to help keep me safe. They gave that mom at blizz con there word it be used for every log in. NOT at all yes to add time or post on here yes but not to get into the game. So Keep your word about new looks.

Yes.
Please redo the art no one looks, or create new art that no one will look at, instead of redoing the art that we look at every time we log in.
Makes perfect sense.

Right now it's just difficult to give any sort of estimate on when new models might be available. Whenever a new expansion is in development there are many, many requests for new art assets. We're elbow deep in designing new gear sets, fleshing out the environments, finishing up several new creature models, etc.

If all of this makes you feel that much further away from ever seeing new character models, I can say the project is still a regular topic of discussion for us. We want to figure out the best way to introduce such a feature without shocking a huge chunk of the playerbase that doesn't really think about how their character's features could be improved every time they log into the game.

OK, i see your point on the first one, but you are in fact charging people money for those new assets. Meaning the people who are already paying for the game have the artists that should be working on new models, off on a separate venture which they will see no benefit from until you've made more money from them.

Shocking people? well i can certainly see your reasoning there. I know i'd be shocked as hell if the models actually got updated after 6 years.

Why can't you just add to the current character customization, so that the people who want to keep their characters the way they are have that option, and those who want to upgrade may do so? Just throw in a few more options for us.

I'd love to update my human characters, since they have bad hairstyles and fuzzy, unimpressive features. Plus, my female night elves have the worst hands I've ever seen. Those chicks could palm a basketball.

To put it simply, there is a demand for this. You know there is. We pay a subscription to get maintenance, and in this area... we're simply not getting it. Step up and get it done, already.

I just really like the phrase "Undead beard options". I don't know why, but I'm going to assume that it has something to do with being almost 4 AM here.

You're talking about two different things, though.

1) "Add to the current character customization." In terms of adding more hairstyles/facial marking styles/earring styles, then yes. That's not a tall order. The problem is that this kind of character customization doesn't really improve the quality of the underlying character model itself: the textures are blocky, the skeleton has fewer points of articulation, the character's movements are jerky or unnatural. Adding more customizations just adds more bling on top of what's really an old model of car. You can only spruce up an '86 Chevy Nova so far.

2) "...my female humans have the worst hands I've ever seen." This is a problem that's fixed by updating the character model. Adding new articulation, new animation, higher-definition textures. THAT is the project that's taking so much time and resources. THAT is the thing they have to be meticulous and careful about, because if you change the appearance of the character too much, you alienate the people who liked the existing models to start with, and you might also alienate the people who were looking for a particular change that they didn't end up getting.

And before you ask, I highly HIGHLY doubt they'll let people choose "old and busted model" vs. "new hotness" model during character customization. It's an all or nothing deal to preserve the art style of the game while bringing it up to new standards.

Why did you necro this thread?

Guess what, they are openly working on the project. You aren't happy with them not doing it as fast as possible? Grow up. They will now be finished soon. This isn't something you want to just take one stab at and release whatever you come up with.

We already know they are making this an option for people who want to keep their old models, because we haven't gone 2-4 weeks without some mention from a Blue on this project in the last almost 6 months. We now know dwarves and orcs and humans have all been worked on so far, and we now know they will for a fact be more extensive than just polygon updates and better textures, they are being given the detail and expressive animations you see in the Pandaren and modern era models.

They will probably not be previewed until Blizzcon barring a special surprise. Deal with it. It makes perfect sense, you're not being lied to by PR or advertisers, and it's a bad thing to rush this project. This is taking all the effort of creating a brand new race and a brand new starting environment. They usually take over a year to do that sort of thing when it's not a side project on the back burner.

Ghostcrawler already stated they are approaching this as optional on his Twitter feed a few months ago.

Considering the massive complaints they got from altering human female eyes, its a no brainer really. No matter how amazing and advanced and full of artistic merit the new models are, some moron is going to think they suck because the lips or the ears look goofier to them.

I hope they'll give us a preview of a few ideas and let us vote on them.

So we don't get chihuahua worgen when the original model was really nice.

So my question is, Why not transfer *more resources to getting new player models out if a whole lot of people want to see them right this moment? Do we as a people need to gather 1 thousand signatures to make this happen or is it a "Too bad, soo sad" situation?

Sutei - Daggerspine

It's absolutely not a "too bad" situation, Sutei. I know the concept of us having near unlimited resources to throw at whatever we want to is intriguing, but it's just not the case. We don't have an army of artists on layaway that we can transfer onto a project.

Just the same, we don't necessarily want to exponentially expand the head count of the art team to ensure a specific project gets done. There's a synergy we strive for on each of our development teams. In fact, we go to pretty great lengths to vet applicants whenever hiring for a new position. We need to know our iterative design philosophy and our core values are shared. So, if we were to hire several new artists to get this project finished, you certainly wouldn't see the results of that "right this moment."

Right now it's just difficult to give any sort of estimate on when new models might be available. Whenever a new expansion is in development there are many, many requests for new art assets. When are you going to address the issue of server populations in a serious way? This is a issue that is causing many players to have a less then epic game experience. It has been a ongoing issue for a a very long time now.

Right now it appears that your attempting to exploit the problem and make a profit off of it. I have heard many of times that this is not the case, so when will you acknowledge the issue and begin to start to adrress it? Or is it that it's true the profit off of server transfers matters more then providing a epic experience for players?
