LoTR vs Star Wars

Imo, hands down; LoTR wins.
I genuinely feel bad for the people who will never understand the beauty of Lord of the Rings. The Breaking of the Fellowship : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sQ9NOV3KNpY Star wars nerds 0 Tolkien Fantasy fiction master race 1 |

i think i'd have to agree with you, but i will always love both lol

What's kind of funny is that Star Wars and LotR are THE IP's for anything and ToR is doing well but LotRO is kind of falling short but they can make it really good if a developer like BioWare was on it. Not dissing the people who make LotRO but it really is EA's management that I am dissing because they put all these deadlines but they don't understand that if the developer gets the maximum time to make it like Blizzard the end product is definantly worth the wait like SC2 when it came out. It was amazing!(personal opinion don't flame please).
Sorry I kind of went of into a tangent but just felt like I needed to put it in there. |

Huh, I didn't know it was a contest. I like them both. (Not counting the prequels, those never happened)
Star Wars is a lot more fun than Lord of the Rings but LotR has a far more epic feel to it. Star Wars is faster paced and more exciting whereas LotR takes long breathers in between set-pieces to flesh itself out. They both have silly dialogue moments and unfunny or downright annoying comic relief bits, but they both have great characters, great character arcs, and an epic story. I'd say they're not really comparable as movies since they both approach and present their subject material differently and effectively. SW is more action oriented while LotR is more character driven. Unless you subscribe to the false dichotomy of sci-fi vs. fantasy, there's no reason they should be compared. If I had to, I'd sooner compare The Hidden Fortress to Star Wars and The Seven Samurai to LotR. That's far a more interesting discussion. |

High fantasy vs space opera? Didn't know the two were even remotely comparable.
Regardless, are we comparing the original Star Wars movies to the LotR movies, or are we comparing certain books or what. Star Wars has many books written by a lot of different authors. The Silmarillion is one of my favorite books but I'd rather much read the Thrawn trilogy than the original LotR trilogy(snoozeville). |

Lord of the Rings is my favorite and I really love the story. The book is better than the movie, but I still think the movies are great in spite of the creative license Jackson took in a few places.
I still love Star Wars and will always have fond memories of when I first saw Star Wars in the theater in 1977 (the first three never happened as far as I'm concerned). If you haven't experienced the original Star Wars on the big screen, hopefully a theater near you will have a special event one day and show it. |

Didn't you hear? WoW is actually Lord of the Rings online with a name change.

Phantom Menace wasn't bad. I like the LoTR books more than the SW movies, but my personal favorite sci fi series is Dune. |

Phantom Menace wasn't bad. I like the LoTR books more than the SW movies, but my personal favorite sci fi series is Dune. This man speaks the truth, a truthsayer if you will 8) While a lot of people consider the new star wars movies to be bad, they all had their moments of greatness. The end of the second one where Yoda walks in on Christopher Lee, pulls the lightsaber from his belt using the force, and you realize whats about to go down - easily one of the best moments from any of the movies, even the originals. |

I like both when it comes to movies (only counting the SW IV V and VI not the newer ones). No need to choose.
But the LotR books are a class unto themselves. |

The narrative in the Foundation series is probably the best space opera in Literature. And if you can't take the wordiness of the other 3, at LEAST read the Hobbit. It's a very engaging story once you get past the first 40 pages of describing the Shire. |

|
I suggest to any LotR fan to read The Silmarillion. I found it a lot more interesting than the Fellowship trilogy.

The Silmarillion and The Hobbit are a must to read for any LotR fans. Two of the best books I have read in a long time.
