On the upside the frame rate stutter when turning is gone.

Interesting, cause that was a bug in 10.6.8 opengl, not wow. But i guess the bug was more specific to the 32-bit GL frameworks.

For those of you running OS X 10.6.8 (snow leopard) make sure you are running with 64 bit kernels and extensions to get the most out of the 64 bit client. To check and see if your system is running with the 64 bit kernels

^ very much this.

When using 64 bit client, you are MUCH better off with OS X booted in a 64 bit kernel mode, this is NOT default on 10.6 in most macs, 10.7 it's default, but on 10.6 you need to enable it yourself. 64 bit apps can run on 32 bit kernel, and 32 bit apps can run on 64 bit kernel, but things are truely better when they match. 64 64 or 32 32. so that all the kexts and resources the game is using are native and not run through a compatability layer. if that makes sense? I suspect you won't see performance issues on 64 bit drivers.

Interesting, cause that was a bug in 10.6.8 opengl, not wow. But i guess the bug was more specific to the 32-bit GL frameworks.

Does the opengl in Lion operate better than the one in Snow Leopard? I had thought about upgrading but wasn't sure if the new features were worth the cost, but with increased performance added in, it might be.

Can I ask, was there any time frame for including the recording? I wwouldn't mind testing myself but I didn't want to keep having to chop and change between the two as I use the in game recording almost daily.

I noticed an increase of almost 13mb of addon memory usage with the 64bit client. Also, instead of less stutter, I'm having more stutter while turning (enough to make me revert to the 32bit client).

Yes you'll notice that with addons. The variables are bigger in memory and pointers are longer. The addon's not really using more stuff they just have bigger pants to fill.

"This beta 64-bit version of World of Warcraft does not match the installed version of the game.

Was the zip you downloaded the one from this link ? the one with Live in the link.

File name "WoWLive-64-Mac-15211.zip" . At one stage the PTR versions were being shared around. The Test version will have a green T icon. The live version will have the normal brown wow icon.

Try going to /Users/Shared and delete the Blizzard folders there.

MacPro, 6GB RAM, Radeon 5870, 10.7.3.

The 64-bit client doesn't appear to be able to differentiate between main-keyboard equals (=) and the same key on the number pad. Ditto for Return (on the main keyboard) and Enter (on the number pad).

Also contrary to the notes, iTunes Remote seems functional (it won't show the playing track or when the track title changes however).

Other than that, things seem great.

I'm not sure why I can't get the 64 bit client working. I'm running on a 2010 Mac Pro with 64 bit kernel/ext. I've installed the client file in my wow folder and then clicked the launcher. I click play and after a few seconds the dot on the dock showing that the launcher is running disappears. Nothing happens. Any ideas?

Error in your unzipping program has caused your client to come out "still born"

Basically it's like this. When you double click a program on OSX there's a few things that happen. One of those is posix does a basic sanity check on the binary of the program your launching to see if it has execute permissions.

Easy fix.

Assuming "World of Warcraft-64" is in the Wow folder and the wow folder is in the Applications folder :

chmod 777 /Applications/World\ of\ Warcraft/World\ of\ Warcraft-64.app/Contents/MacOS/World\ of\ Warcraft\ 64

(copy and paste as one line into Terminal.app out of applications)

Also do these ones :

chmod 777 /Applications/World\ of\ Warcraft/World\ of\ Warcraft-64.app/Contents/Helpers/*

chmod 777 /Applications/World\ of\ Warcraft/World\ of\ Warcraft-64.app/Contents/Frameworks/*

chmod 777 /Applications/World\ of\ Warcraft/World\ of\ Warcraft-64.app/Contents/Resources/Error\ Reporter.app/Contents/MacOS/Error\ Reporter

Can you test the number pad = vs main keyboard = in the 32 bit client ?

I believe it's a known issue in both.

To be more specific, I'll bet Oishi used the command line unzip to extract the 64-bit application. Doing so has never been a problem in my experience in eight years with OS X except with Blizzard software. For some reason, unzip extracts Blizzard software (such as the WoW 64-bit client, or the StarCraft 1/Warcraft 3 installers) from .zip files without proper permissions. (I know the binary in Contents/MacOS is affected; don't know about other files.) Double-clicking on the .zip file from within Finder to let Archive Utility extract the application generates a working application.

Ok. Tested this on a MacPro running Lion at home and it's fine. So it's a problem with my laptop. I'll have to check it out tomorrow.

apsolutely, it completely cured the stutter issue that plagued 4.x entire expansion for example. it added support for several new extentions (that blizz isn't really taking any advantage of yet, but they could if more users upgraded). the more users that upgrade to lion, the better the survey results are to motivate the devs to take steps to go forward with the functional implimentations of new stuff the newer OSes have. Somet hings they hold back on in the regard to backwards compatability. In a perfect world everyone would be on lion, and mac wow would be taking full advantage of the 3.2 core profile and 4.x extentions that are available even that could take some strain off the cpu and provide a smoother play experience. In a realistic world, wow has to pretend technology is 2-3 years behind to support the most users with older hardware or just older software.

anyways long ramble short. Lion is far ahead of 20.6 in graphics and driver support. There were some early bugs in 10.7 and 10.7.1 that got ironed out in 10.7.2, i think the last of the ati wake from sleep performance issues were resolved in todays 10.7.3.

Actually, that's just a 4.3.2 change. I am currently running the 32-bit client and noticed the same thing with the update on the 32-bit side.

What is the purpose of the 64 bit client? How does improve the game? I understand that 64 bit allows for more/bigger memory, but how exactly does this improve things?

2 small issues

- My G15 keyboard does not work. Not just the display but the key bindings on the extra G key's. I tried several times and they work in 32 bit mode. with 64 those keys are ignored.

- Anytime I go from 32 to 64 all my graphics are reset to almost 0 I need to go into launcher options and reset which is annoying.

The system is a late 2011 27 imac with a core i5 chip and 16 gigs of ram. latest os updates applied.

why I can't get the 64 bit client working. I'm running on a 2010 Mac Pro with 64 bit kernel/ext. I've installed the client file in my wow folder and then clicked the launcher. I click play and after a few seconds the dot on the dock showing that the launcher is running disappears. Nothing happens. Any ideas?

This happened to me. Just move the Config.wtf file out of the WTF folder and try again. This solved the problem for me. I went ahead and re-set my settings rather than move the original back.

I'm having the same problem as Barsam. When I click "Play" in the Launcher I get an error window after a few seconds which reads:

This beta 64-bit version of World of Warcraft does not match the installed version of the game.

You must acquire a new 64-bit executable in order to keep using the 64-bit version, or instead use the 32-bit version.

I've tried repairing WoW, I checked file permissions, I confirmed 64 bit mode on the kernel, and I removed Config.wtf. None of those helped.

I'm running WoW on a Mid 2011 iMac with Lion 10.7.2.

Any thoughts?

For those of you running OS X 10.6.8 (snow leopard) make sure you are running with 64 bit kernels and extensions to get the most out of the 64 bit client. To check and see if your system is running with the 64 bit kernels,

1.) Scroll over apple menu
2.) Hold Alt
3.) Select "System Profiler"
4.) Under content scroll down and select "Software"
5.) Make sure it says Yes next to "64 bit Kernels and Extensions"

If it does not say Yes then you are currently not running the 64 bit Kernels. In order to activate it you will need to restart your computer. When your mac has fully shut down and begins to restart press and hold 6 and 4 on your keyboard right after the chime until the apple logo appears. Perform the steps above to check if you did in fact load the 64 bit kernels. You will have to do this every time you start up to run in 64 bit mode.

There is a way to make it always start up with the 64 bit kernels but I HIGHLY suggest you make sure you dont have any software issues before you move on. You will also be changing some of your start up files so BACK UP your system before you move on.

To make your system always start with 64 bit kernels,
1.)Go to Applications/Utilities and open up terminal
2.) Enter the command line

sudo systemsetup -setkernelbootarchitecture x86_64

If you decide to revert back to 32 bit follow the same steps but enter in

sudo systemsetup -setkernelbootarchitecture i386

To "get the most out of it"? Statistics please?

You may wish to edit that and let people know that they have to have a third generation Mac Pro or later to do so. The first and second gen Mac Pros are EFI32 and cannot boot into 64-bit Kernel Mode (at least not without messing with Chameleon bootloader and some voodoo).

The 64-bit client still shows improvement evein in 32-bit Kernel Mode however.

I just tried setting my machine to the 64 bit kernel, and it made my CPU temperature go up about 70 degrees. Any idea what caused this? Early 2010 MBP, 5,3 2.8 GHz Core 2, 8GB RAM. Sorry I can't just copy paste from the profiler, Safari is having issues staying logged into the site, typing this on my phone.
