How is my build?

Laptops are generally much more restrictive with CPU upgrades, and in this case, no. No Sandy Bridge laptops will be able to upgrade to Ivy Bridge.

Intel HD 3000 is just bad. Trust me. Unless you are fine with playing at low settings, don't.

So far, only dual-core ultrabook-purpose Ivy Bridge mobile CPUs are delayed. Quad-core mobile parts may come out as intended, but these will cost you $.

How does the Radeon 6650M compare to the 6520G?

In other words: this

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834246328

worth it over this?

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834215257

My friend would like to keep as close to his original target as possible (which was 400), so is that $499 one much of a downgrade?

6650M will way outperform 6520G because 6650M is a dedicated card while 6520G is the integrated GPU in the APU.

Ok. I've narrowed it down to two cases (finally.. I know :P).

I'm going to pay for a full tower even though it's not necessary YET. Not going to downgrade another part to make up for the added cost of this.

I'm either going for:

COOLER MASTER HAF 932 Advanced
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119160

Antec DF-85 Black Steel
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811129087

Both have exceptional reviews and I think both look very nice. I like how the Antec has the internal 2.5" bay for SSDs and doesn't require any sort of conversion from a larger bay. I also think it looks better than the HAF 932. However, the Antec seems to be thinner and taller (I think with less space overall) at 19.90" x 8.40" x 23.50", compared to the HAF 932 at 22.70" x 9.00" x 21.50". This annoys me somewhat as when going for a full tower the big thing is the extra space. Compared to a HAF 912 (note 912 not 932) at 19.50" x 9.10" x 18.90", the Antec is hardly lengthier, is actually thinner, and adds a few inches to height. For some reason I don't see added height to be as great as added length, but maybe it actually is helpful?

Tough choice.

Either case is fine. You can go with either.

Picture does seem to indicate Antec case is not as roomy as HAF 932, but it might be just pictures screwing with the perception.

By the way, HAF 932 Advanced has 2 SSD brackets too (but you have to provide screws). I know this because I own that case. ;) It is indeed extremely roomy.

What power supply would be best for powering a 7970? Any different than 7950?

AMD recommends 500W or greater. But if 500W is the bare minimum, don't I have to take into account other components that draw power (like additional fans, etc)?

Their requirements include all other components -- and it also assumes you have !@#$ty power supply.

I would go with 550W~600W with 7970 -- and that is, if you will overclock.

Found a power supply that's on sale at newegg. Chances are it's a !@#$ty one then but it does have 80 plus certified (so maybe not). I suppose I'll post my current build.

Somehow this is still LESS than that CyberPowerPC build even though this has a 7970 (instead of 7950) and an added data drive :). Also, most of the parts appear to have free shipping.

PC Power and Cooling Silencer MK III isn't crappy. It's based on SeaSonic OEM build, which is a highly trusted name in power supply biz. :<

I recommend it all the time too.

Few observations:

The motherboard will be different by the time Ivy Bridge comes out, and price will differ depending on what we see.

It's very likely 7970 price will drop down massively if Kepler is any good as rumors seem to suggest.

Are you buying both motherboard and graphics card now?

If you can spare little more $, Corsair Performance Pro is slightly faster than Crucial M4 AFAIK, and they both use same Marvell controller.

Yeah this is why I put "tentative" next to MoBo and graphics card. I may order something soon if it goes on sale (like that power supply possibly). Just chose the 7970 to get a feel for what the final price tag will be given that I would like to go with one high end card. It will be either nvidia/amd depending on performance and price.

Do you think it's worth just getting a larger SSD (perhaps double the size) instead of a secondary HDD? I was planning to get a 1TB HDD or something because I thought HDDs were very cheap. They seem to actually be rather expensive right now.

I used only 300 GB max on my old desktop - and that was with a lot of software on it that I hadn't used in years. Could easily keep it below that. I just see it as being a little annoying to have to store certain files/folders/programs on one drive but not the other.

A good 256GB SSD will cost 300 something, but if money allows, a great idea (as SSD performance increases with larger size). As long as you control what gets installed / what you save, you should be fine with a 256GB. You could always add a hard disk later anyway.

How's this one?

Crucial M4 CT256M4SSD2 2.5" 256GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148443

Price: $295.99

If I remove the 128GB SSD and the 500GB HDD - and then add this one, it brings the total cost of the system to $1540.92.

So, replacing them with the 256GB SSD adds about $43 - not bad.

Desktop:

Intel i5-2500k @ 4.5 GHz
Corsair H100 closed-loop water cooling
MSI P67A-GD53 P67 motherboard (bought before Z68 boards were out)
Ripjaws 8GB (2x 4GB) DDR3-1333 RAM (DDR3-1333 were good deal cheaper back then)
ASUS Reference Radeon 6950 2GB w/ shader unlock + OC'd to 6970 speed
SoundBlaster Audigy 2 (really old card)
128GB Crucial M4 SSD
1TB Western Digital Caviar Black
2TB Seagate
LG DVD burner
750W Corsair Enthusiast power supply
CoolerMaster HAF 932 Advanced
Old Saitek keyboard + Logitech G6 mouse
Old 2.1 Creative speakers
Dell U2412M IPS monitor

I will probably replace 6950 with Kepler if Kepler is really good.

I wonder why Kepler is taking this long. AMD must really be raking it in on the new cards because nvidia has failed to release any.

nVidia is blaming TSMC and low yields, but who knows? There are still plenty of rumors about Kepler, and there's not even a single "real" leaked benchmarks about it yet. We'll see in two months.

What's funny is that Kepler was supposed to be out last year according to nVidia roadmap.

AMD is indeed raking it in. Recently, it is said that next-gen PlayStation console will be using AMD GPU. That means all three next-gen consoles will be using AMD GPUs.

We know currently that WiiU will be using customized version of Radeon 4800 series GPU (Radeon 4870 is roughly equal to Radeon 6770 today). Next-gen Xbox is said to be using custom version of Radeon 6670.

Interesting. Though I suppose what AMD gaining from making good graphics cards is nulled because they are failing to compete well with Intel on the CPU side.
