How do you go about gearing?
|
Edited by Frankfert on 2/14/12 5:23 AM (PST)
I ask this because I just returned to the game a couple of weeks ago. I have been running dungeons and capping VP for those two weeks. You can look at my gear to see that I'm a year behind everyone.
I want to spend my JP and VP as wisely as possible. How do you all fellow dps usually go about picking up gear? What is best to replace first. I don't want to buy a JP helm and then a week later go, doh, I should have just saved for the Valor helm and picked up such and such instead! |

hi, i think you should just buy some 377 resil gear and jump into new 5 man dungeons and lfr
instead of takeing the time to gear up your toon, there isnt a progression in this game anymore, you go rit to the end content since the final raid is the easiest. |

hi, i think you should just buy some 377 resil gear and jump into new 5 man dungeons and lfrIgnore this tool. 1) Purchase trinkets/off-pieces. My first purchase (on all my raiding toons) was the 700 VP ranged-slot item, followed by the back, ring/trinket, bracers, boots, neckpiece and, eventually, something I wasn't able to get from heroics/raids. 2) With some cash in hand, you can purchase VP bracers and boots from someone, perhaps even on the AH. Prices on your server will vary. 3) With even more cash in hand, you can also purchase some of the crafted items. Now, step (1) is what I do on my alts, while step (2) and (3) is what I also do on my main. As for getting an upgrade drop for something you just paid currency for? ... It happens. The order I gave has been quite painless this tier. |
^ This. Also, if you have Justice points, spend them. Don't worry about whether you replace the gear. I'd start with trink, ring, etc., as Doro suggested. As soon as you can, get into the newest heroics that drop 378 items. Run heroics until you get a decent weapon and some reasonable gear then start hitting LFR. After you hit LFR a couple times, see what you need and what would be the best upgrade for you and use your VP. Just a suggestion. |

Thanks for the suggestions. I was thinking about getting the Valor helm first. It's a huge upgrade (also my BiS from what I can tell) and I'll have the valor for it tonight, but the rings and trinkets, if I can get them all with what I have saved up, may be a better start.

1. Get Fluid Death from the JP vendor. It's a 359 trinket, but is incredibly powerful thanks to the amount of Hit and stacking Agility component.
2. If the Lavabolt Crossbow is in your price range, that would be a large upgrade for you. If you have earned the Honor this season, the PvP weapon will still be a huge upgrade. Note that this is the only PvP piece that you should even consider picking up. Along that same vein, if you do not get the Lavabolt Crossbow, take the tanking bow (Ironfeather Longbow) from the Well of Eternity quest, as a 378 tanking bow is better than a 346 weapon thanks to its ranged weapon damage component. Once you're running the End Time dungeons regularly, Sylvannus and Benedictus drop Bow and a Gun, respectively, that is properly itemized for Hunters. 3. Get whatever 378 items you can with your JPs, prioritizing whichever item gives you the largest Agility/JP upgrade. you'll be swimming in JP before long, so don't worry about making the wrong decision here. Do the same with your VP. However, the neck, cape, boots, and ring should take priority here, because you will want the T13 set, from LFR or normal modes. The 397 trinket is relatively underpowered compared to what you can get from the Raid Finder. 4. Even if you have the tier helm, get Zeherah's Dragonskull Crown, because she is awesome. |

1. Get Tia's Grace from the JP vendor. It's a 359 trinket, but is incredibly powerful thanks to the amount of Hit and stacking Agility component.Tia's grace is a dungeon drop. You're thinking of Fluid Death. Also, although it's generally frowned-upon to roll into PvE content using PvP items, it might be worth your while to grind honor for the 378 PvP bow. It's pretty easy to get enough honor for it, and (assuming you don't have the gold to burn on a lavabolt crossbow) it'll be leaps and bounds better than anything you can get from 346 heroics, simply based on weapon damage alone. In general, you want to push for enough gear to get into HoT heroics, then start grinding those on repeat. |

Tia's grace is a dungeon drop. You're thinking of Fluid Death. You're right, and I fixed that. Though, both trinkets are incredibly OP for their iLevel. |

Run 346-353 heroics, get whatever gear drops so you can queue for HoT heroics, go forth and farm your gear.

For many classes, the trinket you can get from the VP vendor is best in slot. If this is the case for hunters, then you should get the trinket first.
After that, you should look at the loot tables for LFR and regular Dragon Soul to see what slots have upgrades. No capes drop out of dragon soul, so that should definitely be high on your list. Necks also do not drop, so you need VP for that. Don't buy the VP bracers or boots. Those are BoE and should be purchased with gold. After you have a trinket, cape, and neck, you should buy a ring. The helms and chests are very good items usually, but of course you want to make sure you can get your 4 piece bonus. Hold of on purchasing a helm or chest with VP until you have 4/5 of your tier pieces. The VP belts are also good if you are too cheap to buy one of the BoE drop belts. |

Buy as much 377 PvP gear as you can afford then move straight into HoT Heroics. I'd like to say that you're going to be the lowest DPS at all times but people are really bad and if you're playing correctly you'll still be on top of the meters 90% of the time. I did that with this character and it worked out beautifully.

My fresh 85's typically have at least enough JP for a 378 piece by the time they ding, if not 2 (if I'm going very casually).
Other than that, I buy 373 boes with since most are amazingly cheap which usually solves one slot, bracers and boots of 359/378/397 varieties from alts with extra VP whichever I feel is appropriate (and how much work I expect to put the alt to), fill in with 377 PvP gear. Replace PvP gear first no matter what, it's a public embarrassment. |

Ignore this tool. Except he's right. Unless you are tanking, you might as well go straight into the new 5 man dungeons and LFR as soon as you can. There is no point wasting time doing the old dungeons for level 346 or 353 gear when you could just buy superior pvp gear, especially as a hunter. Also, try to get into the Tol Barad raid as soon as you can for the chance to get current tier pieces. |

Wow im surprised how many people need to turn to pvp gear.
|

its quick and easy and you can afk in LFR for loot

Run LFR dragon soul every week, get your 4 piece T13. Run dungeons for VP to buy any ilvl 397 pieces you can't get from dragon soul.
I would avoid buying the T12 valor armor. Wait for your T13 LFR pieces and use that valor to fill in your boots/belt/neck/etc., assuming you haven't gotten said pieces out of LFR. Ultimately ilvl is king. There are stat priorities to pay attention to, but so long as you're sporting 384/397 gear that is meant for your class, and have a reasonable idea how to play your class, you'll do just fine. If you really want to dive in and aim for your highest potential, there are a number of websites that can help you figure out which stats you need to prioritize, how to gem/enchant, how to execute your rotation, etc. |

because we always get the loot we're after, 100% of the time. sure :p |

You're currently at iLevel 350. That means if you queue for LFD, you're most likely to get one of the Troll dungeons (ZA or ZG). They drop 353 epics, and ZA has one or two quests you could complete for additional 353 items. When you get to iLevel 353, you'll be eligible for the 3 new heroics, which drop 378 epics. There are also several quests, which reward 378 epics.
In short, you're well in sight of catching up to everyone else. When the 3 new heroics came out, my Priest went from iLevel 359 to 371 in the span of 2 days. |
I'm surprised how many people think turning to pvp gear is a big deal. |

Fastest way is to grab one pvp item, since your at 350 already..then head to the new twilight 5 mans. Pretty easy to gear up now a days. If you have some jp, grab trinket, maybe neck, the rest will flow outta the new 5 mans. And with the gear you have, the dps you pull will be FINE
Edit: AND DONT waste your time trying to gear up in a regular 5man heroic..just grab a pvp item,OR jp item, the head to the new 5mans |
