Can someone explain why the FPS stutter issue has not been fixed for Snow Leopard? This stutter issue was not a problem in Wrath. I understand that this issue was fixed with Lion but I don’t feel that I should have to upgrade to Lion in order to fix this issue. So who is at fault? Blizzard or Apple with this issue?

The bug is IN Snow Leopard. But it's neithers fault, as apple has provided an update to fix the issue (payed but cheap upgrade to Lion), and blizzard did all they could to work around the issue for users who didn't/couldn't upgrade right away. Also, it didn't happen in wrath because wrath had much lower graphics and zones with less detail, plus a farclip setting that didn't go as high (view distance). 4.x added tons of new visuals, even ondocumented ones like MANY spell effects revamped to look better and use a lot more particles, much higher polygon counts in old world (especially zones like stormwind and what not). Since you'd spend much of your time in stormwind, or new zones like uldum and what not, it's important to note all of these zones have a much higher polygon count then anyting in wrath did. So you're comparing apples to oranges. Blizzard cannot fix this issue though beyond everything they already tried to do. Asside from having massive amounts of vram, and their 80% caching rule they added in 4.3, and turning view distance down, you cannot avoid this issue until you upgrade your OS to one that's actually supported by apple where they have fixed this bug (lion). |

This much is true, as the team does try the best with some limitations.
Though I hear that if you try the 64-bit WoW Client version, this helps for this issue. Try it out. http://us.battle.net/wow/en/forum/topic/3988300444 ________________________________________________ Mac Tech Support for Baaaaahlizzard Entertainment Not finding what you need here? True, the 64 bit client while running 64 bit kerne all but eliminates it too, as the issue is primarily in the 32-bit memory management of opengl on 10.6.8 i'm sure.
32 bit kerenl with 64 bit app will help some but not completely as tiap has noted on his limited 32 bit kernel mac. But if yours supports 64 bit, you can boot 64 bit kernel mode to eliminate this proble with 64 bit wow client. |

Ok. Thanks for the information:). I might try the 64 bit client out.

Update. Much much much better performance under the 64 bit client. Thanks:)

Thanks for all of the responses. Unfortunately I was a little too optimistic. I did some more testing and the stutter is still a problem. So it seems that my only feasible option to fix this issue is to upgrade to Lion, which I think is pretty lame. People should not have to upgrade their operating system in order to get this problem fixed. So let me guess, any bugs in Lion will get fixed with Mountain Lion. See the trend here? This is a concern for all Apple users out there especially when Apple plans to release a new operating system every 12 months (that’s coming from a few business articles I read).
Oh, well enough of me venting. FYI, my iMac is fairly new. I have the 21.5 inch that has the Radeon HD 6770M graphics card. I bought is a few months before Lion was released. |

Thanks for all of the responses. Unfortunately I was a little too optimistic. I did some more testing and the stutter is still a problem. you are probalby not using a 64 bit kernel then, go to system information for your mac and look for this line System Software Overview: System Version: Mac OS X 10.7.3 (11D50b) Kernel Version: Darwin 11.3.0 Boot Volume: Mac OS X (SSD) Boot Mode: Normal Computer Name: Omega-3 Secure Virtual Memory: Enabled 64-bit Kernel and Extensions: Yes Time since boot: 3 days 8:39 if it does not say yes, you will want to turn it on to improve wow performance with 64 bit client. instructions in this post here http://us.battle.net/wow/en/forum/topic/3988300444#15 |

Omegal, the 64 bit kernel and extensions was enabled when I tested.

hmm i dunno then, guess i never did ask what your hardware is. how much vram do you have? 64 is more efficent with the memory but i suppose the stutter could still be bad if you don't havea 1GB vram vid card maybe? |

Hi Gworr,
Can you describe the stutter? Is this only happening when you turn your camera, or just when standing still, etc? This will help us make sure what type of stutter you have and if it's not something else causing this. ________________________________________________ Mac Tech Support for Baaaaahlizzard Entertainment Not finding what you need here? Machkhan, the stuttering occurs when I turn. Omegal how do I check how much VRAM I have (I'll have to check this when I get home from work)?

I get the same stutter effect on my machine as well. It happens when i go from full screen to windowed mode tab out and open safari to check something like wow head. And then go back to the game. The stutter appears. If i stay full screen he whole time i don't have a issue.

the stutter is the result of swapping things in and out of vram on 10.6's opengl. i suspect when you open browser and do other things you sap some from wow.
|
|
|
Hmmm...I'll have to do some more testing when I get home. I tend to keep safari open when playing wow.
|
|
Ok so is there a way to increase the Vram size.

Well, looks like the culprit might be Safari. No stuttering noted in Orgrimmar, Uldum, or Twilight Highlands (with Safari closed).
Omegal, my system stats are below. Let me know if anything look out of place. Thanks all for your time and help. Korbendallas, I do not think there is way to increase the Vram. I think the Vram is a fixed amount based on your graphics card. For example, my iMac is limited to 512MB of video ram. I could be wrong. I'll let the experts answer your question;) Hardware Overview: Model Name: iMac Model Identifier: iMac12,1 Processor Name: Intel Core i5 Processor Speed: 2.7 GHz Number of Processors: 1 Total Number of Cores: 4 L2 Cache (per Core): 256 KB L3 Cache: 6 MB Memory: 4 GB Boot ROM Version: IM121.0047.B1D SMC Version (system): 1.71f21 AMD Radeon HD 6770M: Chipset Model: AMD Radeon HD 6770M Type: GPU Bus: PCIe PCIe Lane Width: x16 VRAM (Total): 512 MB Vendor: ATI (0x1002) Device ID: 0x6740 Revision ID: 0x0000 ROM Revision: 113-C0170C-170 EFI Driver Version: 01.00.544 Displays: iMac: Resolution: 1920 x 1080 Pixel Depth: 32-Bit Color (ARGB8888) Main Display: Yes Mirror: Off Online: Yes Built-In: Yes Connection Type: DisplayPort System Software Overview: System Version: Mac OS X 10.6.8 (10K549) Kernel Version: Darwin 10.8.0 Boot Volume: Macintosh HD Boot Mode: Normal Secure Virtual Memory: Not Enabled 64-bit Kernel and Extensions: Yes Time since boot: 9:57 |
