World of Warcraft®

So, what is it? Optional or necessary? I'm speaking strictly heroic DS, of course.

I'm especially curious to hear the opinion from the 'hardcore' raiders because I intend on getting into the heroic encounters soon.

EDIT: I've decided to just gem all BiS pieces as I receive them, however, you're still welcome to contribute to the discussion. Please try to keep the conflict to a minimum though.

If the item is BiS, why would you not put epic gems in it?

Because those gems are incredibly expensive; unless there is a phenomenal method of money making I have yet to discover, lol.

BIS gear.

These 2 should go together, enjoy the 10% :)

I only put epic gems in BiS gear.

Which means I used very few for progression. Fail gem system is fail.

Its just WoW gold, not like you can buy anything useful outside of the game with it.

By BiS, do you mean the heroic BiS or normal BiS? I just don't know why I'd gem all the normal gear I'd soon replace while doing heroics with epic gems.

I'd just avoid putting epic red gems in anything you know you won't be keeping for the rest of the tier.

410/416 and relic should get epic gems.

Anything that is 410/416 or otherwise BiS (badge cloak) should have epic gems if you are doing hardmodes. We encouraged everyone to have all non-red gems be epic as well, regardless of the piece of gear.

There are multiple ways to get a good amount of gold/gems, one being having alts that can clear DS each week to get a shot at red gems. Gold in general is very easy to make in WoW.
