Does anyone know why I have to abandon my current pet in order to tame a new one? It makes me a bit emotional when my pet fades out and my toon waves goodbye to it. (Which has happened twice as I've traded my bear for a Scarred Crag Boar and then traded the boar for a Forest Lurker.) Yes, I know it's irrational to feel sad about a nonexistent animal, but I do. So if possible I'd like to avoid abandoning any more pets as I upgrade them.

There are 2 ways you can have more pets. You can stable them at stable keepers in town, or as you level up you will get multiple call pet skills where you can send out different pets that you have available.

Pets level with you, so you don't HAVE to abandon them as you level and get a new one if you don't want to. Near almost every inn you'll find an NPC called a "stable master". There you can store any pets you want to keep for later, but don't have room for in your call pet slots.

You also get to have several pets that you can dismiss and call as your "call pet" level increases
lvl 1: 1 pet
lvl 18: 2 pets
lvl 42: 3 pets
lvl 62: 4 pets
lvl 82: 5 pets

Thank you for the information. I wasn't aware what the ramification of stabling your pet are. The pdf starter guide should include more detailed information on how many pets you get at which level .

Head over to Wowpedia.org and click around to learn more about the game for things like that. Blizzard's guides are either out of date or somewhat vague unfortunately.

Oh and this forum. Hang here with us to learn too :D

Yah blizzard guides tend to be like that. They only really give small amounts of info to get people interested in the class rather then teach them how to play them. A lot of the small stuff you will start to learn yourself, from other people, or from other websites that give more detailed information.

lvl 42: 3 pets
lvl 62: 4 pets

Note that with these skills, you'll still have to send your current pet away before you can call up another.

Dismiss Pet is the temporary skill. Your pet is still available, and you can call him right back if you want, or call out another, or get another from the stable.

Abandon Pet is the permanent skill. Your pet is freed to go frolic in the meadows, and if you want another pet of that type you'll have to go find it and tame it again.

So at level 18 when you learn Call Pet 2, you'll probably want to Dismiss your current pet so that you can tame another.

I feel for you!

Welcome to the ranks of us who get so emotionally invested in our hunter class/role that we actually feel for our pets – for real!!!

I'm sure you know this, but your original pet is still "out there" in your starting zone somewhere. I wouldn't hesitate to find it again, tame it, and stable it. If you need help finding the exact info on a particular pet model, I use www.wowhunterpets.info Also, many people like petopia.com

After I completed the grind for the winterspring mount, I tamed a frostsaber for a pet, and I also keep the cub active, so I have the whole fam. Regardless, my original cat is still happily sleeping away in my stable (and – yes – consuming a stable slot). I will never abandon her! We went through SO MUCH together!

Glad to meet someone who understands. My forest lurker is now happily stabled while my crocolisk runs around with me clamping his mighty jaws on the bad guys. I just wish I could get him to stop growling all the time.

There are 8 stable slots if I'm not mistaken, and I tend to tame a new pet every three levels or so, so I doubt I'll stable every pet I replace. It's nice to know that they're managing well on their own in their natural habitat.

When you get to level 85, you will be able to have 5 active pets and 25 pets in your stable. You will be able to call any of the 5 active pets without visiting a stable master. I understand how you feel too. Even though I rarely play with my black wolf Night, it was my first, and I could never get rid of him.

You can get a little emotionally attached to your pet, especially back in the day when you had to feed, level, and train it. A pet's loyalty to you increased over time. You could open your pet window and it would say, "[Pet name] is your best friend." Wow, you could never abandon a pet after reading that!!!

In the Options, in the Sound section, there's a checkbox to enable or disable pet sounds.

Unless you are referring to the "growl" ability. In that case, right-click on the icon on your pet's toolbar to "turn off" growl…

Yeah, that's a possibility. But the crocolisk is notorious for being a noisy beast while just idling around, so that was my assumption.

Absolutely. I still have the raptor I tamed way back when we couldn't have a pet until level 10, she was one of the "Corrupted" mobs running around Durotar at the time. I have lots of others for various purposes, and really really really like using a shale spider now, but that raptor will always be my favourite.

I tried a croc once, but that hissing/growl whatever got annoying, so back in the river he went. Love my cats too, but not the yawning.

Stood near a worgen hunter the other day. He had a croc.

Most. Annoying. Sounds. Evar.

I'm in Loch Modan right now. My limits on what I can tame are foxes, mudbelly boars and cougars. Any recommendations so that I have a good pet for dungeoning at level 15? Or maybe there's a potential pet I've missed.

A lynx would be the most ideal of those, for the Agility buff it provides. I haven't used foxes enough to know how helpful they are beyond basic pet attacking, and boars are more of a tanking pet. Keep an eye out for the rare blue fox in the eastern part of the zone:
http://www.wow-petopia.com/look/mistfoxskin.html

IIRC you'll have to be careful when taming those lynx, since they pounce when they attack, which can throw off the taming.

Petopia says my croc is more of a tanking pet. It also lists tier 1 and tier 2 talents, but I don't know when I get pet talents. I'm assuming at level 20.

I also have a spider that might be a better idea because it's a cunning pet, so it's more versatile. The plus of my croc is that it does a very good job of keeping aggro away from me when I'm questing and seems to hold its own well in dungeons.

The information on foxes is that they have some special abilities that get unlocked once I get a pet talent tree.

I look forward to being able to tame a pet without having to stable my current one.
