How about a GTX 480? Seems faster (though I thought lower number meant worse?) for a comparable price. Trying to stay into the low to mid $200 range.

GTX 480 has power / heat problem. If you can deal with it, GTX 480 is an OK choice -- but only if you can get it cheaper than GTX 570 price, as GTX 570 is just as good as it.

I'm using http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119160 for my case
COOLER MASTER HAF 932 Advanced RC-932-KKN5-GP Black Steel ATX Full Tower

And new egg is showing a EVGA GTX480 for about 209 right now, would I be ok with that case for cooling for that card?

I"d strongly recomend a positive pressure case for 480GTXs. The Silverstone FT02, for example.

These cards run hot. This can't be expressed strongly enough. They can literaly change the environment of the room they are in. Think space heater. Literally. What they can do to other things in the box is debatable, but heat and electronic gadgets usually don't get on well together.

There are some articles over on HardOCP about just this very thing. When seemingly every fourth word in them is heat, hot, hairdryer, sauna, blast furnace and the like, well, you get the idea. With a postive pressure case, you can move the heat (mostly) out of the case, but then you get the pleasure of its company in your computer den/room/cave/grotto.

The 480 is still a strong card, but I'd either raise the budget for a 570, or set video aims a bit lower with a 560Ti. To my mind, it's a better solution with less potential hassles over the long run.

Yea, considering that I would like to game in the summer when it gets to mid to high 100's, while this card sounds like a good value, the heat issues i read with it might not be worth it

GTX 570 can be had for as low as $270 after rebates:

If not, there's a daily deal featured on NewEgg selling 560 for total of $150 after rebates:

Well considering most of my gaming is MMO, with a borderlands/diablo/bishock thrown in for the future

Will I get good performance out of a base 560, spend a little more for a TI or save up for a 570?

I want something that'll last a good while, with little buyers remorse lol.

Out of all the things I've bought for my new computer, the video card is what I seem to be flip-flopping the most on.

Base 560 can max out the games you just listed. Only games that 560 would struggle on would be very demanding games like Crysis, Metro 2033, or Battlefield 3 Ultra settings. Even then, to max these games out with good FPS, you are looking at $350+ investment, so...

Thanks Kalganized, thats exactly what I needed to hear.

I hear IB CPU has less OCing ability compared to SB CPU. I Know it consumes less power, but have you heard anything about this Kal?

This is from people who have gotten a hold of chips early.

Yes, I have heard of it.

I'm honestly not that shocked - Intel's initial batch releases often had troubles. It'll be a little while before Intel releases next stepping that should have addressed this issue.

Alright, I guess I will get i5-2500k then. I can't wait any longer!! haha

Is there any need for overclocking for just gaming, Fraps and video editing?

Overclocking does help a little with everything, but the most gain will be seen from the programs that does rely on CPU a lot when working.

Otherwise, no. For most games, overclocking the CPU will only make a little difference, as most of them are GPU-reliant, and does not stress CPU all that much.

So Kal - Will the new CPU Ivy bridge be better then the i5-2500k or i5-3570k ?

Clock-by-clock, i5-3570K will be slightly ahead over i5-2500k.

If you like to OC a lot (more than usual, beyond 4.5 GHz), then i5-2500k might be a better deal.

That's a BIG shame. Wait 5 months + for Ivy Bridge to come out before building a new PC only to read this.

Edit* There was a lot of talk about because I5-3570k consumed less power, it would ultimately mean lower temperatures and better overclocking.

Well, Ivy Bridge DOES have much higher OC potential if you use liquid+higher-level cooling.

i7-3770k has been OC'd to 6.7 GHz, with all 4 core + HyperThreading active. It's not just booting either. Did usual test suites like SuperPi, etc.

I won't be using complete liquid cooling I suppose, rather Corsair H100 closed-loop setup. What do you think I'll be able to push on Ivy Bridge (i5 3570k) with this? Will I be able to eek out more than a 2500k?

You will certainly do 4.5 GHz at least easily, like any other Sandy Bridge CPUs, it's the question of how much further beyond 4.5 GHz.

Most Sandy Bridge CPUs top out at about 4.8 GHz, and in some lucky cases, 5.0 GHz.
