Guild Wars 2 - Anyone going to try it?

So, I've been pretty geeked up over Guild Wars 2... but, since I'm a g'damn idiot, I didn't take advantage of the pre-order beta play this weekend. I know, how bad am I?

Anyways, does anyone plan on playing Guild Wars 2 when it drops? I'm almost certain I'll be giving it a go... so, give me contact infos so I know how to reach you guys when I start playing.

I pre-ordered, and I'll be in beta this weekend. I'm definitely wanting to put together a guild pre-launch.

So, I played the beta this weekend... Pretty much the most fun I've had in a MMO in a really long time. I rolled a Norn Warrior and just messed !@#$ up all weekend. While the personal story isn't as specific or in-depth as SWTOR's, it's still fairly engaging, and you have a bit of a choice in what it is. The combat and events all seem to flow naturally and don't feel forced. Each weapon gives a different feel to your character and there is honestly no right or wrong choice.

World vs World PvP is pretty rough at the moment, but only because there is no real organization from most of the players. When people did pull together, though, the fights became amazing. 1v1 seems to be pretty balanced (IMO), but you will get rocked a lot if you are flying solo and you run into a group. There isn't a real gear barrier, so it comes down to skill and resource management. Battleground PvP is even more balanced, because everyone has access to the same gear stat-wise.

Seriously, though. If anyone wants to form a guild, let me know. This game already has me hooked.

Yeah, my brother was in the beta. it sounds like they learned a lot from wow's weak-sides... but I'm sad to hear the PvP isn't up to par... but then again my brother isn't much for PvP, he'd rather run off and quest then go for a chance to get into a big brawl.

As my brother said, "if you can see it in the world, you can go there"

I can't confirm anything or not, but maybe you can Durane. How far did you get into the level before beta weekend ended? Apparently all quests scale (and the instances take you back a few levels sometimes... much to my poor brothers frustration; He got stuck on some ice boss) But all things considered from the PvE side of things it seems that he really liked it. Although he didn't play a ranger and give me any information on weather I'd like it or not.
Chances of seeing me over there are low, I'd need quite a few friends playing over there then here.

Thanks for the information, Durane.

I wouldn't say PvP isn't up to par at all, in fact it's better than most. It's just that three days isn't a lot of time for players to settle into guilds and work on their tactics. That will change once it goes live.

WvW reminds me a bit of Open RvR from Warhammer Online, only better and on a larger scale. Fights that break out are marked on your map so you can go join them. There are several objectives on the map, as well, so even if you aren't in a massive party you can contribute.

Pretty much, and the experience you get from exploration is fairly substantial. The world is huge, too... In my three days I uncovered 3% of the total world, and I made an effort to do every event I could. The WvW are also huge, and you could easily avoid enemy players if you're careful (although that'd be no fun).

The player scales downward with the area they are in. While this means you can't just go back and stomp everything in sight, it also means that all events and quests remain somewhat relevant, and, in my opinion, makes things more interesting. This also makes it more rewarding for higher levels when helping their lowbie friends. I will say as you acquire better gear and more skills, lower level fights do get easier.

I didn't play one, either. However, I used a rifle a lot on my warrior, and it was brutal. The great thing about GW2 is it seems like you can play your class almost any way you want. You could easily be a ranged Warrior or a melee Ranger, although for PvP I recommend a swapping between a melee weapon set and ranged weapon set for Warriors, Guardians, and Thieves. Rangers could probably benefit from the same, but they could easily do two ranged weapon sets.

Chances of seeing me over there are low, I'd need quite a few friends playing over there then here. Thanks for the information, Durane.

No problem. Honestly, I would recommend everyone who is even remotely interested to buy the game. Since there is no subscription fee, you could easily play GW2 and WoW without breaking the bank.

That reminds me, if you guys didn't know it yet, guild memberships are account-wide on GW2 and you can belong to multiple guilds.

After GW2 hits, you should update this thread for us Durane. :)

Thanks again, I don't know if I'll be able to get it any time soon, but who knows. maybe I'll be shooting people over there someday soon.

Well, the game doesn't even have a release date yet, so you still have time!

Haha, I need to get a new graphics card; and more ram; and another terribite hard drive... I've basically gotta get a new computer.
I also want a laptop for school work... All in all, I don't think I can afford it this year. But who knows? Maybe they'll have a crazy sale on steam or something and I'll fall for it. haha

Stress test for pre-purchasers only, this coming Monday, May 14 from 1-8pm CST. It's not really long enough to get a good sense of the PvE content, but it's long enough to mess around in Structured PvP.

after the whole TOR debacle i promised myself i wouldn't play another mmo until it's been out for at least 6 months. so annoying to level up and then realize the game is just "meh". that being said i will probably drop 60 bucks on gw2 cause i got it like that and then be back on WoW a few months later.

There is a lot of truth to that, really...^

Aren't there people/website that do reviews on video games - MMORPG's included?

Fair enough, Truekken. I did the same thing. I thought the single-player story was great, but end-game was seriously lacking. I know that it's not even a year old yet, but there just wasn't enough to keep me interested... Although the Rakghoul Outbreak event (which was a lot like the Scourge Outbreak just before WotLK) was pretty fun. Still, the PvP was stale and the PvE wasn't all that challenging.

I may risk sounding like a fanboy, but I don't think that will be GW2's case. PvE events scale with the amount of players involved, so fights almost always feel like a struggle. Your "effective level" adjusts to the area you are in, keeping content from being steam-rolled by high-levels. There is no competing for gear rolls, and your loot adjusts to your level, so a level 20 can get level 20 gear in a level 5 area.

Structured PvP is easy to get into and can get pretty intense. The formula is familiar with small teams, two sides, and area-control objectives. World vs. World is three sides, each side composed of players representing their server, four maps, 100 players per-side per-map (effectively 1200 players per battle). The battles last two weeks long (like old-school AV and then some), and servers gain points by taking and holding objectives like keeps, towers, and camps, as well as escorting supply caravans. If one server is owning too hard (which my server did last test), then the other two join forces in the hopes of evening the score. Players can build siege weaponry, including a siege golem suit.

I won't say not to wait, but I will say that my experience has been amazing so far.

Massively.com and MMORPG.com are the two sites I frequent for my MMO news, as well as IGN. Also, if you are even remotely interested in a MMO, I'd suggest following their official Facebook or Twitter accounts. As a side-note: Massively and MMORPG have beta key giveaways pretty often, so following them can't hurt either.

For those who are, or will be, in beta, the next beta weekend is June 8-10. I'm on Fort Aspenwood as Heori, and my account tag is Heori.6138. If you're looking for a good WvW server, Fort Aspenwood has dominated so far.

Massively.com had a beta key giveaway earlier and all 500 of their keys were gone in less than five minutes. Crazy...

I cannot start looking into GW2 because my computer needs to be re-formatted... It rejects pretty much any new game. (honestly... a computer that can play Warcraft just fine, and can't handle boxes in minecraft? *FACEPALM*
More over downloads take forever for me, so there'll need to be a good time for it later. But it sounds like a lot from my guild will be playing both wow and GW2 (including my dear brother who refuses to PvP).

Btw, Durane, where have you been? I haven't seen you around at all in WoW, busy off playing Diablo3, and GW2 or something? (Last time I saw you was probably before Hyjall in Cata.

I did a short stint with SWTOR, then Mass Effect 3, then Tribes: Ascend, and now Diablo 3. I'm still around, but mostly on alts. If you happen to run across/kill Anrak, Rarous, Athmir, or Usiel, and of course, Heori, give me a hug. Mostly all I do now is level alts and gather stuff to sell.

A wild Minstral appears!

having played GW1 since launch, and being a fan of the game, I've already purchased GW2. had a blast in the last beta, and I'm looking forward to this beta weekend.

Also, as with the previous GW games, the lack of subscription cost is always a positive.
