PC Crash Radeon 7970

Aight I've just updated my driver to 12.9 beta along with the latest AMD Catalyst Application Profiles 12.9 CAP 1.

Haven't had much time to run the game, but I'll keep monitoring the setting with Dx 11 and will report back here.

Just going to add in my $.02 here. I, too, upgraded from a Radeon HD 5870 graphics card to a Radeon HD 7970. The 5870 was fully stable and didn't experience any issues with locking up. I haven't owned this 7970 card long at all. I just received it on Tuesday, the 2nd, less than three days before this post.

World of Warcraft runs fine, for the most part, but my entire computer will occasionally lock up while playing. The sound abruptly stops, and the computer is completely unresponsive. The images on my monitors will all freeze on the screen.

I haven't had much time to toy around with drivers since getting this card, but it's no secret that AMD's drivers often leave quite a bit to be desired. I did experience lockups outside of WoW (primarily Alan Wake, early on in the game at one specific point), however those lockups occurred while I still had a secondary 5970 in the system for Bitcoin mining. I haven't been able to reproduce lockups outside of World of Warcraft since removing that card, but given the timing of the lockups that may also potentially be based purely on luck. I'll keep my eyes peeled there and post any updates as needed.

I'm currently running the Catalyst 12.9 Beta driver, just like I was before I installed the card. I performed a clean install of the drivers shortly after upgrading my graphics hardware. That resolved most of the other smaller problems I had, but I can definitely still reproduce full system lockups in World of Warcraft.

This does appear to be driver-related, although I would also like to notate that I do have a slight overclock on my graphics card to match the GHz Edition speeds (1000/1500 MHz, up from 925/1375 MHz). The temperatures are excellent, and the graphics card remains stable and artifact-free while running FurMark and performing intensive Bitcoin mining. Once again, the lockup does not appear to be hardware-based.

And for what it may or may not be worth, here's a Pastebin submission of my DxDiag:

Played whole day on Pandaria with latest driver and no freeze up so far.

But can't say for sure because the freeze up happens when you expect the least...

Will continue my monitoring.

Glad it's been good for you so far, Duraham. :) May I ask how often WoW would freeze up on you before? It happens very infrequently for me, usually once a night at most, but like you said it's always when you least expect it!

Also, which drivers are you using, specifically? The latest released, or the latest in beta (12.9)?

Is there a Beta driver for the ATI Radeon 4xxx hd 1 gb PCI card? (I am a n00b and cant find one)

Also using the AMD Catalyst Application Profiles 12.9 CAP 1.

I installed a 12.3 driver for my ATI Radeon 4870 hd 1 gb, from this my Temps were at a record low, CPU never over 40 (c) and GPU never over 56 (c) but was only in game long enough to kill 3 mobs.

I have the black screen(monitor power down prob), I've been through everything else, waiting to hear back from a tech spec.

Alas to report my latest finding my good friend but after 30 mins in doing my golden lotus dailies it froze up on me again had to force restart my PC. I can't really tell you the frequency of this nature because sometimes you can go off playing for days with no freeze but like my latest case it froze off within 30 mins.

I'm using the latest beta driver (12.9) with latest AMD Catalyst Application Profiles 12.9 CAP 1. But it doesn't matter now, I saw it with my own eyes that the issue still remains.

Back to Dx 9...

How many of you guys experiencing instability have also upgraded from a previous AMD/ATI video card? I was doing some poking around today and found some very suspicious behavior: Many programs, including DxDiag and several games, still detected 5900 series hardware in my system. This was particularly strange because I've performed a full, clean reinstall of drivers since having any 5000 series hardware installed.

I'm not sure what was more confused: Windows or me! I prodded around a bit more and viewed non-present devices (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/241257) and sure enough my system picked up the 5870, and not two installs of the 5970, but four! I've since removed the additional devices from Device Manager and will be doing further research to see if this helps out at all with stability. I was able to fix stability in other titles by physically removing the 5970, so we'll see if it helps out at all here.

First off, though, I'm going to see if the 5970 "hardware" problem was truly a problem with the hardware, or if it was just a very obscure Windows bug. I'll post any additional interesting findings.

I don't think it's windows causing the issue.
I've had the same issue on fresh installs of both windows 7 and 8.

It's definitely only WoW and definitely DX11. I had no issues with my 6870's (2x XFired) and I do with my 7970 in DX11 mode.

CAP 12.9 and beta 12.9 both still crash.

Aitsu, you're probably right. I was able to resolve some minor problems (mainly DxDiag reporting) by removing the phantom entries, but everything else is about the same.

It would be nice to find out exactly where this issue is coming from. Chances are that it's AMD's drivers, though. Even if WoW does something that AMD's drivers don't like, they should still fail and recover gracefully, not lock up the entire system.

I run a 7970 and I'm experiencing the exact same problem. It's really random. Doesn't happen when I'm doing anything else. I've had my PC running for hours surfing the net or just running while I am off doing other things. The freeze isn't showing up in the computers event viewer.
As I post this I just had to hard boot my computer less than 5 mins ago because of the lock up.

Gah, just experienced another system lockup. This is definitely a problem with the 7970 and AMD's drivers. AMD has a bug report form. I recommend that anyone experiencing this problems submits a bug report.

*updated with the proper link* (AMD has one of these for every driver they release - submit a new report every time this issue happens on a new driver)

Are you guys using a PCIe 2.x bus or 3.0?

I don't believe this to be a driver issue. The GPU is internally crashing due to some odd compatibility issue.

If anyone is using a PCI 3.0 bus and has this issue then please chime in...

I have recently installed a HD 7870 and am experiencing the same lockups you have described.

I was using the 12.8 drivers but began using the 12.9 beta. All seemed to be well for about an hour and a half before boom, system hang.

It is beginning to get very frustrating, I feel like I am playing on edge, waiting for the inevitable random crash...

I have now sent a survey/report to AMD. I hope the 12.9 full release will correct this and soon, otherwise I may have to go back to my HD 5850 for awhile. Annoying to have to do that just for the sake of one game (albeit the one I play most!), but at least it was stable across the board.

This is not an issue. DX11 works fine with my Radeon 5870. I can play that for hours without a single lockup.

There could be some kind of software-induced issue (of the WoW game) that causes the 7xxx series GPU to hang internally but that seems very unlikely.

Hmm interesting. And you're getting the same issue? The computer will lock-up with the repeating audio sound?

Are you on the latest BIOS for that board? It looks like Version 2104 is the latest...
