TWC Southeast & Latency Issues
|

Let me say up front that I don't think this is a Blizzard issue. It's pretty clear from everything I've seen that it's an issue with our ISP. It's certainly not the first time our area (SC specifically, southeast in general) has seen issues with Time Warner.
For several months and increasingly in the last few weeks, I've been experiencing strange lag in WoW, particularly in combat. Characters, NPCs, and abilities freeze, but chat works with no problems, and DBM continues to pop up messages at the appropriate times. After several long, frustrating seconds, it's like the whole game "catches up" in super fast forward. Today it's been the worst of all, and I need someone to help me understand what I'm looking at and pinpoint the problem so I can go punch TW--I mean, reasonably discuss this issue with them. I know some of you guys know these things like the back of your hand, so I'm hoping for some help. Here's the trace I ran from our house to our server's IP. As you'll see, it ran into more than a little trouble. I ran this twice with the exact same results both times. Other notes: --We just bought a brand new router 3 days ago. This has been happening since before we got it (it's actually WHY we got it), but as I said, today's been the worst day, by far. --We haven't noticed any significant issues browsing or downloading except for the very occasional time out. Also, my husband requested I take out our IP address, which I've done. Unless our IP address is actually XXXXXX, and then I've played you all! Thanks in advance for any help you can offer! --------------------------------------------------------------------- Tracing route to 206.18.98.192.tms-idc.com [206.18.98.192] over a maximum of 30 hops: 1 4294967272 ms 4294967272 ms 4294967272 ms 192.168.1.1 2 15 ms 4294967293 ms 15 ms cpe-XXXXXX.sc.res.rr.com [XXXXXX] 3 4294967287 ms 4294967281 ms 4294967282 ms cpe-024-031-198-201.sc.res.rr.com [24.31.198.201] 4 21 ms 4294967292 ms 4294967294 ms 24.93.64.16 5 5 ms 7 ms 7 ms 107.14.19.20 6 6 ms 4 ms 19 ms ae-0-0.pr0.dca20.tbone.rr.com [66.109.6.183] 7 5 ms 4 ms 4 ms 216.156.116.173.ptr.us.xo.net [216.156.116.173] 8 7 ms 7 ms 11 ms 206.111.0.90.ptr.us.xo.net [206.111.0.90] 9 35 ms 58 ms 39 ms cr2.wswdc.ip.att.net [12.122.81.250] 10 58 ms 35 ms 35 ms cr1.cgcil.ip.att.net [12.122.18.21] 11 58 ms 40 ms 45 ms gar2.clboh.ip.att.net [12.122.133.197] 12 87 ms 89 ms 75 ms 12.122.251.22 13 65 ms 34 ms 35 ms 63.240.130.214 14 * * * Request timed out. 15 * * * Request timed out. 16 * * * Request timed out. 17 * * * Request timed out. 18 * * * Request timed out. 19 * * * Request timed out. 20 * * * Request timed out. 21 * * * Request timed out. 22 * * * Request timed out. 23 * * * Request timed out. 24 * * * Request timed out. 25 * * * Request timed out. 26 * * * Request timed out. 27 * * * Request timed out. 28 * * * Request timed out. 29 * * * Request timed out. 30 * * * Request timed out. I'm in Myrtle Beach, SC having the same problem with TWC. Although I do not have the solution, I figured I might as well post to assure you that you are not alone. I was not having this problem until today. This is not limited to WoW but everything that requires Internet connectivity.
I needed a break today anyway. |

Yeah, I'm starting to get responses from my friends all over the state. For curiosity's sake, did you recently do the "turbo" for $5 more a month promotion they were doing?

And to the smarter people out there, I assume this is too close to home to jump around it with WoWTunnels or something?

Definitely a TWC issue there. Right as you hit their backbone. I would take multiple reports to various different game servers then get on the phone with their tech support. Have any of your friends experiencing the same thing do likewise. TWC will not do anything unless enough people complain. Also, it may take you a while to find someone at TWC tech support knowledgeable enough to understand what you are talking about. (Know from past experiences)

I don't have turbo.
The problem actually just fixed itself. While everything pointed to TWC causing the problem, when my downloader finished its process my Internet was revived. This might be a conflict between the download servers for this patch and TWC. Regardless, just let the patch finish downloading and see what happens. It will time out a lot while its running, but get to the end and see if your problem is resolved. I went from timing out just browsing the Internet back to playing WoW and streaming at HD quality on Twitch again. |

Yes. As you are hitting the big drop right as you connect to TWC's network from your home. |
