MoP Shield Plate Gearing List

Edited by Kaitelynn on 8/10/12 7:20 AM (PDT)
These lists are meant as a general guide for a Protection Paladin getting ready to raid at level 90. The list can also apply to Warriors and Death Knights as well, though they may have slightly different values in gear than we do for the ones that there are multiple choices. I do plan on updating this list sometime in the near future with a Raid BiS for T14, and eventually any new heroic dungeons and raids they introduce. As well, I'll update with forum item links when possible to make this more convenient and a lot less text-y.
I did not include items that had both hit and expertise as secondary stats, nor any that had haste included. There are several items with mastery and haste which can be useful since haste does affect our GCD in MoP, but unless there's sound theorycraft that we want/need it, I'm not including haste and mastery items. There are a few items listed that have hit or expertise with a tanking secondary stat, but I prioritized survivability (dodge, parry, mastery) over DPS (hit, expertise). There will be two lists included; one for purely 5man heroic gear, and one that shows the best valor point and crafted items available. Keep in mind the full valor point list will take up to 21 weeks to fill up, minus whatever slots you upgrade with raiding pieces before you get that slots valor item. This list is subject to change due to any balancing Blizzard may do in regards to stats on the items, removal of items, or addition of items. Pre-Raiding, Pre-Valor list: Head: Helm of Rising Flame (Brother Korloff; Scarlet Monastery) Neck: Armsmaster's Sealed Locket (Scarlet Halls; Armsmaster Harlan) Necklace of the Dark Blaze (Scholomance; Lilian Voss) Gorget of Usurped Kings (Golden Lotus Honored; Justice x1250) Shoulders: Spaulders of Immovable Stone (Siege of Niuzao Temple; Wing Leader Ner'onok) Vigorsteel Spaulders (Scholomance; Darkmaster Gandling) Back: Souldrender Greatcloak (Scarlet Monastery; Thalnos the Soulrender) Phantasmal Dra-pe (Scholomance; Jandice Barov) Cloak of the Silent Mountain (The August Celestials Honored; Justice x1250) Chest: Canine Commander's Breastplate (Scarlet Halls; Houndmaster Braun) Hateshatter Chestplate (Shado-Pan Monastery; Taran Zhu) Breastplate of Wracking Souls (Scholomance; Instructor Chillheart) Chestplate of the Stone Lion (The Klaxxi Honored; Justice x2250) Wrist: Bubble-Breaker Bracers (Stormstout Brewery; Hoptallus) Ri'mok's Shattered Scale (Gate of the Setting Sun; Commander Ri'mok) Serrated Forearm Guards (Golden Lotus Honored; Justice x1250) Hands: Gauntlets of Resolute Fury (Shado-Pan Monastery; Master Snowdrift) Hive Protector's Gauntlets (Gate of the Setting Sun; Raigonn) Axebreaker Gauntlets (Mogu'shan Palace; Xin the Weaponmaster) Waist: Sparkbreath Girdle (Shado-Pan Monastery; Gu Cloudstrike) Waistplate of Imminent Resurrection (Scarlet Monastery; High Inquisitor Whitemane) Legs: Sap-Encrusted Legplates (Siege of Niuzao Temple; Vizier Jin'bak) Feet: Wraithplate Treads (Scholomance; Jandice Barov) Stonestep Boots (Temple of the Jade Serpent; Lorewalker Stonestep) Ring1: Lime-Rimmed Signet (Stormstout Brewery; Yan-Zhu the Uncasked) Ring2: Crystallized Droplet (Temple of the Jade Serpent; Wise Mari) Thunderstone Ring (Shado-Pan Honored; Justice x1250) Trinket1: Iron Protector Talisman (Mogu'shan Palace; Gekkan) Trinket2: Heart of Fire (Shado-Pan Monastery; Master Snowdrift) Mogu Rune of Paralysis (Golden Lotus Honored; Justice x1750) Weapon: Inelava, Spirit of Inebriation (Stormstout Brewery; Yan-Zhu the Uncasked) Ook's Hozen Slicer (Stormstout Brewery; Ook-Ook) Shield: Shield of Blind Hate (Shado-Pan Monastery; Taran Zhu) Impervious Carapace (Gate of the Setting Sun; Raigonn) |

After you're finished gearing in heroic 5man dungeons, you have quite a few valor choices to get to replace the heroic dungeon gear as you begin to raid, as well as a couple of possible crafted pieces. To get every item here it takes roughly 20,500 Valor and 1,250 Justice, plus however much it costs to make or buy the two crafted pieces.
Pre-Raiding list: Head: Yi's Least Favorite Helmet (Shado-Pan Revered; Valor x2250) Neck: Paragon's Pale Pendant (The Klaxxi Revered; Valor x1250) Shoulders: Shoulders of Autumnlight (Golden Lotus Revered; Valor x1750) Back: Yi's Cloak of Courage (Shado-Pan Revered; Valor x1250) Chest: Breastplate of Ancient Steel (Blacksmithing; Living Steel x8, Spirit of Harmony x8) Cuirass of the Twin Monoliths (Golden Lotus Revered; Valor x2250) Wrist: Battle Shadow Bracers (The August Celestials Revered; Valor x1250) Hands: Gloves of the Overwhelming Swarm (The August Celestials Revered; Valor x1750) Gauntlets of Ancient Steel (Blacksmithing; Living Steel x5, Spirit of Harmony x8) Waist: Klaxxi Lash of the Consumer (The Klaxxi Revered; Valor x1750) Legs: Kovok's Riven Legguards (The Klaxxi Revered; Valor x2250) Feet: Yu'lon Guardian Boots (The August Celestials Revered; Valor x1750) Ring1: Seal of the Unscated (Golden Lotus Revered? Valor x1250?) Ring2: Lime-Rimmed Signet (Stormstout Brewery; Yan-Zhu the Uncasked) Alani's Inflexible Ring (Golden Lotus Revered; Valor x1250) Thunderstone Ring (Shado-Pan Honored; Justice x1250) Special note on Seal of the Unscathed and Alani's Inflexible Ring. These two have a unique-equip that is shared with Alani's Inflexible Ring it seems, so both probably aren't equip able at the same time. If they are able to be worn at the same time, they're both best. If not, one or the other, then the other two rings fall in place. Trinket1: Lao-Chin's Liquid Courage (Shado-Pan Revered; Valor x1750) Trinket2: Heart of Fire (Shado-Pan Monastery; Master Snowdrift) Relic of Nazuo (Darkmoon Card, Ox Deck) An interesting note is that our Darkmoon Card has no primary stats. It's currently just an on use for a substantial amount of dodge. Weapon: Inelava, Spirit of Inebriation (Stormstout Brewery; Yan-Zhu the Uncasked) Ook's Hozen Slicer (Stormstout Brewery; Ook-Ook) Shield: Shield of Blind Hate (Shado-Pan Monastery; Taran Zhu) Impervious Carapace (Gate of the Setting Sun; Raigonn) For a likely easier and quicker look at the overal stats of these two lists until MoP item numbers are put into the Armory, here is a comparison showing the Heroic 5man Dungeons versus full Valor Point gear http://mop.wowhead.com/compare?items=81574:81568:81287:81571:81696:81065:81101:81086:81270:82852:81139:81124:81243:81181:81096:87545;89216:89066:89346:89075:82979:88880:88746:89056:89093:88864:89071:81139:89079:81181:81096:87545&l=80 |

I believe I've got everything covered from a Protection Paladin's viewpoint, which should also encompass most (if not all) of a warrior's wants as well. DK's, sorry if some of this plate isn't exactly what you want. I know you don't want sword 'n board, either. Bears and monks... meh. :P If I've missed any item, please let me know and I'll update appropriately.
For a temporary link to this same list, except with pretty item listing enabled, check out: http://mop.wowhead.com/forums&topic=205379&p=3251085 |

Are all the Justice point pieces inferior to 5-man drops? I don't see any on the list
|
I knew I was forgetting something. =3 Oddly, I have one stand-out justice item on the valor list, but that's because there's only one valor ring so I looked for a quick secondary without thinking about heroic 5man rings. I'll look through that now and update shortly, and include justice gear in one of the lists. Probably in the valor list. |

As much as I just HATE telling you to do all my work for me, can you include a secondary weapon to the epic axe from brewery as it seems to be a rare drop (Similar to the epic ring from the low level scarlet library?)

Ook's Hozen Slicer was already on both lists. n.n As far as Justice items go, there doesn't seem to be nearly as many, or the mmo-champion and wowhead lists are just incomplete for it at the moment. I've added a couple, but... not much. |
So it was. Oops. |

Sticky requested, but I already bookmarked it.
Any plans on doing a 'get into heroics' list, or am I working on that myself? Edit: also, is there a way to see how much hit 790 and 1324 is at level 90 instead of level 80? (and expertise too). |

Sticky requested. I approve of you doing all this work so we don't have to. :)

Thanks for the list. I do have one suggestion, which makes me feel a little dirty: have you considered including pvp gear? With the change to resilience no longer taking up itemization, some of the honor items are quite good. See, for instance,
http://mop.wowhead.com/item=84492 http://mop.wowhead.com/item=84498 http://mop.wowhead.com/item=84420 These items are one item level higher than 5-man drops, and are arguably better itemized. They also have the huge advantage of being purchasable. |
Do you mean 5man heroic gear? The Pre-Raiding, Pre-Valor list is that. Once you get to level 90, you can only do heroic dungeons, unless someone in your party while queuing is under the level cap. At least, that's how I understand it. I could be incorrect. Or I could be misunderstanding what you're asking. Regardless, I do plan on updating this. On the to-do list is to double check myself on Justice pieces and add that into the first list that includes 5man heroic gear. Most Justice gear seems to be slightly worse overall, or slightly worse in itemization, than gear that comes from 5man heroics. Also to be added is any other crafted gear besides the two epic blacksmithing patterns.
I don't know the math behind it for level 90. Wowhead's item comparison should mention it, but I believe even their MoP site version is currently showing the max as 85.
I'm wary of including PvP pieces. I wouldn't want to send the wrong message to brand new people to the tanking scheme, as this list is partially slanted towards helping those sort out. I also wouldn't want to suggest that PvPing is required to be ready for raiding for honor or conquest items. I may make a subsection to include some exceptional pieces, such as that helmet in your list, as a sort of 'extreme' back-up plan for the 'stuff ain't dropping and I ain't got the Valor yet' situations. Sticky requested. I approve of you doing all this work so we don't have to. :) Thanks. My pleasure! |
Understandable, although I'm not sure I agree with the last sentence. I would consider wearing that helm over the 463, and I will be able to buy it the moment I hit 90. Assuming they keep the JP to Honor conversion, you don't need to pvp to buy these items. |
|
There's also the fact that not only is some of it itemized away from tanking, but that gear usually is slanted towards DPS secondary stats (expertise, hit, haste, crit). I suppose the abundance of Mastery on some of it can make a reasonable argument for it, especially in the case of say... the helmet.
I'll give a look over other PvP pieces after getting a better and more complete justice and crafted selection update. |

Any plans on doing a 'get into heroics' list, or am I working on that myself? I didn't realize there was no regular/heroic version of the level 90 instances. Thanks! also, is there a way to see how much hit 790 and 1324 is at level 90 instead of level 80? (and expertise too). The MoP version is currently telling me level 80 conversions 790 hit rating at level 80 is 25.69% and 1324 is 43.05%. :< Either way, thanks! |
