[Mac Spec]
First off my OS is 10.7.4 and is a Late 2011 Macbook Pro with 2.4GHz i7, 16GB RAM and HD6770M 1024MB.

[Issue]
After starting up WoW 5.0.4, the CPU usage goes up to 100% at the login screen.
It uses a whole single core just to display the login screen.
Which makes the fans sound like a jet taking off.

[Similar Issue happened with Diablo 3 too, but was fixed]
The exact same thing happened during the Diablo 3 Beta too,
which was reported by multiple players and was fixed after a few patches for the retail version.
When I reported it on the D3 forums, blue post said D3 was a demanding game and uses a lot of resource, but in the end Blizzard fixed it, previously hogging 100% at the login screen going down to 30% even during game play.

I know the drill. SMC reset, repair permission etc. I went through that with Diablo 3 too.
But ended up being a bug or something in the client.(thats why its fixed now)

So please look in to this, because it makes me not want to play, cause I do not want to break my laptop which wasn't cheap.

I have tried your suggestion right now, but the CPU usage is the same as before around 103 to 104%

And I'm happy to hear that you're going to check about the CPU usage.
I really do think hogging 100% of the CPU just when displaying the login screen is wrong. (I remember saying the same thing during D3 beta)

I dunno if its a bug, but I'm sure some thing can be done, like optimization for the Mac.
The Diablo 3 team did a great job optimizing it and I'm confident the WoW dev team could do so too.

Did you make sure to limit the framerate via the "System" button?

Yes I have, I tried changing my settings. I even tried the "Low" settings and dropping the frame rate to the lowest I can.
But the CPU usage still stays around 100%

Additional test results on a different Mac.

I used my 2008 Mac Pro with 12GB of RAM and an ATI HD5770.
OS is still 10.6.8 on this Mac since I normally only use this Mac Pro for my job.
But thought I'd give it a test and provide test results, so I finished installing WoW on this Mac too.

The results did not change.
I'm looking at my Activity Monitor. The Mac Pro has two 2.8GHz Xeon Quad-core processors
and WoW is taking up around 100% (taking up a single full core).

I guess currently WoW hogs a single core right after its launched no matter what PC (CPU) your using =/

I haven't experienced that. I did remove my temp folder data such as WTF, Interface and Cache before updating. Have we've tried to remove those folders and see if it helps?

I had all that removed before I even attempted patching.

I'm having dancing pixel issues as well, and WoW is taking up a similar amount of cpu usage

I also removed the cache and whanot beforehand

Since some irrelevant issues are being post in my thread,
I want to notify that I am not having any pixel issues or display issues myself.
The only problem is the CPU usage after 5.0.4 update.Thats all in my case.

Install/update process went smoothly too.

I'm not sure if this helps, but in addition to my system info above, I'll post this screenshot showing the CPU usage. WoW is the only significant app running, besides an Adium conversation which is not shown, and this minimized Safari window.
