Shadow Priest vs. Mage in soloing content.
|
Just came back to wow after not playing for about a year and a half and I decided to level either a mage or priest. I might even end up leveling both, but question is which one should I do enchanting on?
When it comes to the faction rep grinds for recipes, and grinding for BoP drops, which toon would be able to do it easier/more conveniently? Mainly concerned in the recipes for enchants that are useful for heirlooms and twinks. I've never played either and I guess to sum it up in a single question: Which can AOE grind & solo content better? Thanks in advance. |

I'm not sure about priest but the mage forums are full of people complaining about how difficult it is to level a low level mage. If thats true i have my doubts. And makes me want to level a mage again for the fun of it because i strive for challenges in pve content.
Enchanting for end game content is the same for both classes atm. All you get is +80 intellect on your rings that you can't get any other way. Which is like a 0.0001 percent gain in your stats. You can just buy everything else and it will be much much cheaper. Don't know what mop will bring. Enchanting is very expensive. I maxed my enchanting and it feels like a HUGE waste of time. You'll spend more leveling enchanting than selling enchants by a long shot. The market gets flooded with people making enchants and the mats are more expensive than the enchants at least on Illiadan. If you take enchanting take tailoring as well as it's much easyer to get mats by disenchanting the cloth you tailor. Otherwise be prepared to spend a lot on enchanting mats at the AH. I honestly would say roll the priest. You can go healz and get 0 time in dungeon que's. Hell i wouldnt doubt it if you can solo most dung's by yourself. I don't have a priest but i'm leaning towards rolling one myself. oh yea all in all i would wait on mop b4 deciding on professions |

I actually plan on leveling both a priest and a mage haha. I'll be playing pretty casually (1-2 hours a day maybe, 3-4 times a week). So I'll be alternating heirlooms between the two of them. I actually missed leveling/questing (i know, right? 1 in a milliion).
I plan on doing enchanting/tailoring on one and jc/inscription on the other. I have a druid I leveled as a herb/mining before I stopped playing because I planned on doing this eventually, just happened to stop b/c of school. Now that I'm back, I have the mats still saved so I'm not too worried about gathering for jc/inscription :] |

What happened to your old characters? Were any of them 85? Have you even levelled a character from level 1 since the Shattering? Did you play levels 70+ at any point?
I ask these questions because it seems like it's been a lot longer than a year since you've played WoW; like, since tBC! Faction rep grinds for recipes and high-end BoP gear or head-enchants doesn't really exist anymore. As of Cata there were no recipes on faction vendors; as of Wrath mobs weren't grindable for most reps, you would use a rep tabard and get rep from running instances; and now as of Mists, most of the reputation content is earned through a myriad of daily quests (all soloable) and you only need Revered to get access to any supplemental gear, and I do mean supplemental because you need Valor to purchase it (which is mostly still earned through instances which give more gear). AoE grind hasn't been an effective soloing technique anymore for Vanilla levelling zones as of Cataclysm, since you'll earn considerably more xp much quicker doing quests or running LFD (as a healer). Finally, soloing content has been equally as effective for all classes and specs as of Wrath and the design philosophy "bring the player not the class" which removed utility specs and moved to make all specs balanced under the role trinity: Tank, Healer, DPS. Mists has even furthered this design philosophy by making the talent tree less daunting for newer players to learn and do reasonably well at while at the same time giving more experienced players an opportunity to make tactical choices about their build on-the-fly and showcase their skill a little more. Just play what you enjoy and you'll be more likely to be motivated to achieve more. Once you get to end-game you will find that game is very different than the one you played a year ago, let alone three or five years ago. |

Wow thanks for the response!
I actually played until around March 2011. It was the first content patch of Cata (BWD, BoT). So I'm familiar with wearing tabards to gain rep in instances for the relevant/current material factions. I just wanted to gather the enchants that people look for for heirlooms (non-level restricted) and some twink enchants, all of which, for the most part, are only obtainable from old content. The AOE grind wouldn't be for leveling but when I return to just burn through the necessary faction reps for those recipes. And the soloing content would be for the enchants that drop in old content or have a lower drop rate in some instances, & mounts (still haven't gotten those damn reins of the ravenlord). I have a few 85's but I wanted to start something new. :] I raided on a warrior and DK but I don't feel like playing them or raiding much either. Looking more for just some casual playing here and there, maybe a few BG's. |

and the grinding/repping wouldn't be for anything else but getting the enchant recipes for heirloom/twink enchants.
Did some more reading and it seems like blizzard made it a lot easier to gain rep with old content factions? So i'm not too worried about that anymore. Thanks everyone! |
