Non-standard screen resolution after 5.x

After 5.x I can't use 1024 x 640 any more. The closest that I can select is 1296 x 810. Please add 1024 x 640 back to the list, since it worked just fine in 4.x client.

I'm given options of:
960 x 600
1054 x 658
1140 x 712
1222 x 764
1296 x 810
1368 x 856
1436 x 896
1500 x 938
1562 x 976
1680 x 1050

Using a desktop resolution of 1024 x 640, os 10.6.8 on a 320m.

Edit: Monitor is 1680 x 1050.

The resolutions listed are generated by the native resolution of your display. You can read more about this change here: http://us.battle.net/wow/en/forum/topic/6471447232#4

Is there a particular reason why this resolution was used? The resolutions that are generated was updated to help prevent many previous bugs occurring.

Yea, my resolution options are sucky now. I used to rock the lowest resolution and it solved most performance issues. I guess I'll try changing my main comp res and see if it stays when I launch( with the acid induced graphics)

Whoa! First, thanks for the fast reply, I didn't expect it. :)

I was using 1024 x 640 previously because it was the lowest resolution that matched the monitor ratio, AND still displayed properly. I want to use lowest possible to reduce the load on the cpu/graphics card to ensure smooth gameplay and keep heat generation to a minimum.

If I remember correctly, 800 x 500 used to be an option, but it would be all blurry - the same thing happens with 960 x 600. Which is odd, since desktop to 800 x 500 works just fine.

As for why 1024 x 640, 800 x 500, 1280 x 800, etc, those are options given by the os.

Vaporghost, what's your machine?
Are you saying that 960x600 is too slow for you and that you want 800x600?

Serelkashi, is there a reason why you do not set your desktop to the native resolution of your monitor?

Personal preference, and some of the programs I use give me problems on higher resolutions due to being coded for lower res. On a higher res, things become too small. :(

I also don't see the need to use a higher resolution, combined with negative experiences on others' computers set to higher resolution.

For games, as I mentioned previously, lower resolution to improve hardware performance/minimize heat.

If 1054 x 658 doesn't look good enough for you...

You can use type this in Terminal:
defaults write com.blizzard.worldofwarcraft DesktopModeIsDefault 1

This will cap your game resolutions to your desktop one.

I never tried 1054 x 658 since the ratio doesn't match my monitor. It's slightly off (1.6018 compared to monitor display ratio of 1.6000). I'll go try it right now and report back.

<goes to try...>

I am impressed. Something changed between now and when 5.x first went live, the lowest (currently 960 x 600) resolution isn't horribly blurry anymore, and the suggested 1054 x 658 is great too. :)

Thank you very much for recommending that I try 1054 x 658, the tiny difference in monitor vs display aspect ratio isn't noticeable to me. I was previously ignoring the resolutions that did not match the aspect ratio exactly, now I know better.

I appreciate the prompt and skilled tech support. Thank you, Machkhan and S4d1k.
