Having trouble loading WoW after Patch

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling WoW after the Mists Patch, but still every time I try to load WoW it tells me that it's "performing [an] initial setup of required data files." I'm not sure why it's doing this -- and it takes quite a while -- and no desktop icon pops up after I have installed the game.

Not sure what I'm doing wrong . . .

Are you moving WoW to the desktop to create a shortcut? With 5.0, any previous desktop shortcut was removed. If you want an Alias (shortcut) on the desktop, you will need to create an Alias, and not move the app to the desktop itself.
