First off - Get the rare finding addon! Saves a ton of time and reduces the 'is it a rare is it?' moments when speed-rare farming rare pets.
Rare spawn pets do not appear as secondaries, even to themselves. No amount of Tainted Rat battles will net you a secondary Minfernal and so forth.
If anyone has any bugs with pets that I have not covered, feel free to post.
It's not there. No one has found its spawn, nor in the beta, it's highly likely Blizzard hasn't placed it in game yet. His sister in AQ isn't there either yet.
EDIT: It's tentatively reported that this critter only appears during the Feast of Wintersveil.
Found in the Shatter Scare Vale, a short jog south of Whisperwind.
Reports say that farming the big Infernals may yield a littleun, I personally haven't had it happen in many hours of killing. There seems to be CRZ errors. When you FP over, you see bunches and your heart leaps -- returning shows nothing there. Probable phasing error.
If you're gunning for a rare, my advice is to wait until a server restart, and log in on an alt in a low population, non PVP server. Minfernals await in droves, though they DO NOT respawn. Blizzard's maintenance time usually ends anywhere from a half-hour to an hour earlier than they said unless big problems, so keep trying to log on.
If you bind Target Interact in your Keybindings, you may nab the Minfernal in the tree with proper positioning.
Found below the Argent Tourney Grounds.
Tricky and rare. Shares the same possible CRZ error as Minfernals, showing up when you FP over but not there. Personally have confirmed they do not share a spawn timer with the other rare mob in the area.
I've found handfuls on my characters that have not completed any Argent Dailies. The most I have ever found was on the character that had completed the Quel'Delar questline (which I hope had nothing to do with the enormous amount I found as it's a very expensive 'fix').
My advice is to either circle on a low pop server (as I've seen up to 5-6 people circling with me on WrA) or to try the same server restart log as the Minfernals seen above.
Found in the cellars below Karazhan -- look for roofless buildings with a square entrance in the ground leading below. You can track them above ground to see if they are there.
Spawn at 12:00 am sharp. Be the first one there or be square, cause they don't respawn until the next day. Someone beat you to it or they're just not spawning? Alt-hop to a different server and see if they're there.
Cont. below are the weather-dependent pets...
Edited by Layton on 10/4/2012 12:37 PM PDT
First off for weather:
You can log in to a sandstorm, snow, or any weather pattern. You do not need to swap areas and come back to make them appear. They are still in the coding, if you have not found any, you are simply unlucky.
As always, server hop, server hop, if nothing's happening.
Their spawn locations on the map are the Gaping Chasm and Noxious Lair.
Silithid Hatchlings are weather dependent critters that can only be found in a sandstorm in Tanaris. This makes them a very rare and tricky pet to get.
However, despite the small number of yellow spawn dots on that map, I can confirm they spawn all over the place in great numbers, not just the top bits.
They DO NOT spawn underground. Any person that's hunted Shadelings can confirm that underground pet icons are a bit washed out on the map to indicate so -- none were tracked as such.
What's the deal with sandstorms?
You can tell if you're in a sandstorm by the puffs sand that look a bit like fog that flies at you repeatedly. You also get a bit of a 'warp speed' effect from smaller grains of sand whizzing by you. The graphic is very obvious, but if you're unsure, turn your computer graphics up to good or higher to double-check.
Like all WoW weather, sandstorms cannot be predicted and are based on RNG. No time or guide can help you guess when they'll appear.
As I was typing this guide, a sandstorm spawned under my main. The hatchlings appeared within a few seconds of the start.
Hatchlings DO RESPAWN. I cleared out the Chasm in full, headed to the Lair, and returned after getting my blue to check -- about 7 more had spawned in my absence.
Some servers ARE unlucky. I logged into a sandstorm on my alt, confirmed I was the only person on my horde and alliance in the zone, but there were still none to be found in either area. A comment on wowhead indicated that some servers have very low spawn rates, as they only found 2 that respawned during a 45 minute waiting period. As some servers also have troubles with Blood Knight having obstruction areas, I'm inclined to believe coding can differ server to server.
The server I was on that had plenty was Coilfang.
Alts. Lots of them on low population non-PVP servers. Just log in and out from time to time -- sandstorms last a while, so don't feel pressured to check every 10 minutes.
If you're antsy, try leveling some of your 13-16 critters in Tanaris while you wait.. but nothing will probably happen.
If you have a loyal and very bored friend, server hop. Have them invite you to different servers to see if anything is up.
When they do pop out, gun it for your rare AFTER you've caught the first one you find to add to your logbook. Don't be distracted by that rare seagull, you can farm him anytime. Forfeit and move on.
In my farming, I've discovered:
Uncommon is the most common type to find.
There are 3 types of Hatchlings, tanks with high hp and lower speed+atk, warriors with lower hp and higher atk and regular speed, and speedsters.. well, you've gotten the pattern by now.
Arctic Fox Kit
Found all over the Storm Peaks when it snows.
I don't have much information on this guy due to insane luck of wandering into the Storm Peaks a minute before a snowstorm started and finding a blue as the first one. They spawn very quickly after the first snowfall, which has a very obvious snow graphic that coats your screen.
As for snow.. I can't say I remember many snow moments while leveling in the peaks, much less than sandstorms and rain. I'm afraid it's wait and get lucky -- maybe camp a TLPD or Skoll while you're at it.
Spawns all over Jaguero island when it's raining, not just the right side.
JAGUERO ISLAND HAS ITS OWN WEATHER SYSTEM. RAIN ON THE MAINLAND DOES NOT MEAN IT'S RAINING ON THE ISLAND.
Rain is very obvious -- dark, and well, rain.
So your best bet is to park a couple alts across server on the island and check back every so often -- nothing much to do but hope you get lucky. LOADS of them spawn, but I did not see any respawn, though I may be incorrect.

Yes, most people don't flyby that area, but you just got lucky to discover some there that others had missed :) I assure you, they spawn all over the area below the grounds, as indicated on the wowhead map.
Warcraftpets has already done so.
Currently, they're working on adding the battle stat info to all the pets.
nice! Also, I hope we get a petopia equivalent for battlepets here pretty soon. I know some smart website developer could make a grip of money doing that...
Yah I saw that the other day. It is pretty neat imho, not quite there yet for what I personally need, but, with the addition of battle stat info it'll be pretty great. Btw the ads on the side of the page are hilarious. Murky for 1400 bucks? Holy crap...

I forgot to add:
These are pets that are ludicrously hard to find a mob (or the mob doesn't exist) of, despite the fact they are not actually rare spawns. They can only, or are suggested, to be caught as secondaries, pets that appear as tagalongs to the original battle.
They are of course, very hard to get a rare version of because of this.
This guide is for those frustrated that they cannot track the mob they want or need, to assure them there is a second option.
Wharf Rat (in STV) - http://www.wowhead.com/npc=61323 (Shows up in Pet Journal, does not currently tick off for EK Safari Acheiv)
Crimson Moth - http://www.wowhead.com/npc=61314 (Shows up in Pet Journal, does not currently tick off for EK Safari Acheiv)
Snowshoe Hare - http://www.wowhead.com/npc=61755 (Battle any pet in Hillsbrad, recommend other rabbits)
Widow Spiderling - http://www.wowhead.com/npc=66579 (Only at night secondary)
Devouring Maggot - http://www.wowhead.com/npc=62640 (Has no known mob. Also seems to not appear in your pet logbook when caught. I caught one as a secondary, did not show up in my book or tick off on the achievement. I did receive the Northrend Safari acheiv upon catching an Arctic Fox Kit, the last one besides that, and it appeared ticked off then.)
Larva - http://www.wowhead.com/npc=62022 (Recommending grinding level 5 maggots to get this as a secondary)
Silkbead Snail - http://www.wowhead.com/npc=63001
Frog - http://www.wowhead.com/npc=36591/frog
Deceptively tricky -- I have never seen a battleable one on my Goblin who conveniently didn't leave the Lost Isles yet. I have only seen one spawn on the island in Ashenvale, may share a spawn with the Toads that litter it. Have not yet seen as a secondary.
And I'll add any others I remember :)

Oh, was that fixed then! Excellent! They weren't in game for a while, I'll edit that. Can you provide a location and a screenshot though? No one on wowhead seems to have found them as you have.

There's another pet I've found that is not in the pet journal and have only found as a secondary, and that's the Silkbead Snail in Pandaria.
Added! I haven't leveled in Pandaria yet, so please, inform!
I mean like when i battle a random wild Pet a Devouring Maggot is second or third pet behind him.
Haven't noticed them in the wild in General, only when i pick a fight and two others join, they seem to pop then quite a bit.
Yes, that's a secondary! A secondary is a pet that appears as a 'joining' pet apart from the original mob you fought -- like, how clicking on a spider, the spider is the first pet you fight. The skunk that joins him to back him up is the secondary.
The devouring maggots cannot be found as primaries, they have no clickable mob to begin a battle with. You have to random battle creatures and hope one shows up. That's what the secondary list is for.
u can get minfernals that are stuck in tree with two simple steps
1. find keybind for "interact with target" and give it a key
2. /target minfernal and spam away
if you just try to spam it in one spot it might not work so try running around the tree or running closer or farther away
