Ah, here's one of these threads!

I'm looking for more opinions on this:

Looks perfect for me.

Excellent. Everything is squaring away.

Now my biggest concern is with my OS. I own a copy of 7 Professional, but what I purchased was actually an upgrade package. I've got an ISO of this on a DVD that I used to perform a clean install on my current laptop that had Vista Home Premium on it, but I'm having a hard time finding information on how these files work, exactly.

Would I be capable of performing an installation on a brand new computer with this disk, or would I have to get something different for that? If so, does my ownership of a Windows 7 key entitle me to whatever it is I need, or am I going to have to pay for another copy entirely?

You can, but you gotta do some work.

Okay, I think I can handle this. Thank you for your help.

Here's one more quizzical surge of ignorance for you:

I did some digging in the darkest reaches of my laptop bag and found my factory disks from HP. Two of them say they contain Windows Vista Premium SP1 and one of them looks like driver software. So I'm guessing if all of this other rigmarole fails I can use those first two disks to install Vista?

Just install the first disc, don't input the keys (they won't work), go straight for upgrade. Theoretically, that would work.

It may not install at all due to the PC not being HP.

Hi Kal,
thanks for the great info.

No problem, although I prefer matte screen than glossy screen (glare sucks).

You can probably find a much better deal on SSDs elsewhere. M4 isn't as fast compared to current drives.

You don't have to pay more for Momentus XT drive when you have a SSD as main OS drive.

Killer network card is a waste of money tbh.

16GB RAM is also overkill and unnecessary for a gaming laptop.

What exactly is the difference between the 8350 and 8320? As far as I can tell, they're identical except for the clock speeds, but both cpus are unlocked so you could just adjust the 8320 to meet and surpass the 8350 couldn't you? Why would I pay an extra 30 or 40 dollars for an 8350?

It's the same way AMD (and perhaps everyone else) has made their CPUs before. The entire FX-series (within one core revision) starts out as the same chip design, but the SOI process is not perfectly exact because they are making millions of tiny transistors (32nm ~ 0.0000012598 inches), so the units are classed based on how well they each turn out. It is more like quality control on one product than it is like making a whole line of different products.

The manufactured chips are run through a bunch of tests of component function and are also tested for what clock per voltage they are capable of (just like we test overclocks). Chips that turn out with some issue in the L3 cache would become a 4300, which only has half of the cache enabled. Chips with bad L2s or bad cores couldn't be used as 8-core CPUs, so they get components disabled and are sold as 4 or 6-core units.

As you saw with 8320 and 8350: They both have all 8 cores and the full caches enabled, so they should both have tested in the factory to be fully functional chips, but the 8350 was apparently more stable for their test of clock/voltage (a "better overclocker", so to speak), so they clocked it higher and put it in the 8350 bin.
So given a certain cooling solution, the 8350 should be able to run faster than an 8320 (or 8300).

6300 and 6350 have the same relationship. They have the same features, but 6350 will be able to clock higher. 6350 will be a "better chip", but waiting for one of those over a 6300 would not be as good of an improvement as waiting for 4350 instead of 4300/4320, in which case only the 4350 will have the full 8mb L3 cache.

TL/DR: Yea, it aught to be able to clock as high and then perform the same, but 8320 would probably take more power and thus run hotter than 8350 at the same speed.

++++

Back again to post a new setup i had in mind.

CPU: Intel Core i3-2120 Sandy Bridge 3.3GHz LGA 1155 (Note: Went with intel because i can upgrade the processor down the road, and all i play is WoW :P)

Motherboard: ASRock B75M-DGS LGA 1155 Intel B75 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Micro ATX

GPU: ASUS HD7750-1GD5-V2 Radeon HD 7750 1GB 128-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16

RAM: G.SKILL Sniper 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800)

Case:Rosewill CHALLENGER-U3 Black Gaming ATX Mid Tower Computer Case(3 fans)

PSU:CORSAIR Builder Series CX430 430W ATX12V v2.3 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified

HDD&DVD burner: 500 gig WD hard drive and LG DVD burner

total price(all newegg): 519.91

Trying to stay under 500(including OS, although that 14.99 thing through reddit seemed interesting), so ill wait for some stuff to come on special before actually buying, just wanted to get some feedback before i go through with it.

I'd probably spend few more bucks on i3-3220.

I'd probably spend few more bucks for an HD 7770.

I'd probably spend few more bucks for a bigger power supply.

Hey Kalg. I saw on your pcpartpicker list that you're recommending the ASRock B75M-DGS LGA 1155.

Have you used this particular motherboard? It looks like the PCIE slot will overtake the USB 3.0 header with even the most modest of video cards.

For example, an HD7750 is 8.3 inches long and the motherboard is only 7.2 inches long.

This will not interfere with the header, unless card has thick backplate.

Hey Kal,

Thanks for the help in my thread. Can you take a look at this one and see if it's good?

Also, out of these 3 upgrades, which one is optimal for WoW?
