Pve wise, they're quite balanced. Both do fine on single target, and aoe, but affliction has way more setup than spriest for aoe, so it might go with what you prefer.
Pvp though, I only played as a warlock, and we can do nicely on arenas and bgs, decent single target and we can do some pressure too, even if the dot throttle kind of makes it weaker than Spriest.
