So, because I'm feeling utterly sick of WoW at the moment (and dailies in particular), I decided to have a change of gaming scenery by picking up Mass Effect Trilogy. I has high hopes for it, as I'm a huge Dragon Age fan, but I'm about half way through ME1 and I'm still waiting for it to be interesting. I simply don't care about any of the characters and I find the game mechanics pretty irritating.
So my question to you good folk is: does it get better? Are ME2&3 more exciting than the first one? Should I persevere, because it's not winning me at the moment?

ME1 and ME2 are my favorites, the gameplay in ME1 is kinda stale but its fun. It starts getting really good IMO at Virmire. I loved all of ME2 but ME3 was a huge disappointment to me, not just the ending.
I'd say maybe save yourself some heartbreak that playing and beating ME3 will give you and play another game.
Wasn't there a thread on this just a few days ago?
The trilogy is worth having if you haven't played the series yet. Very much so.
The first game is very reminiscent of KotOR, not suprisingly. It has some of the same faults. It drags until about level 15, firms up, then seriously rocks from Virmire to the end.
ME2 just flat out grabs you by the throat and doesn't let go until...well, until it's over. It's the most focused of the series, though you'll curse the mining mini game--assuming you can stay awake through multiple planets scrounging for platinum.
ME3 is a fusion of the two. It's the tightest in mechanics, but the writing team changed after ME2. The game is outstanding until the end, where it stumbles. An attempt was made to change the focus of the story and it just doesn't entirely pan out. The EC fixes some of the most egregious misteps, but...it is what it is (hint: don't do anything but high EMS destroy; you risk your gaming soul otherwise).
I will say this, if you don't like dealing with your fellow travelers, you're missing one of best features of the series. It really is about the journey and they are a part of it. I liked some better than others (some much better; some I could have done without), but it really is about Shepard's relationship with them. The rest is fairly simple space opera.
Lastly, the multiplayer component is quite good. Shockingly so, considering the budget and time restraints it was under. It's basically coop horde mode, but it is surprisingly addictive (I'm downloading Omega as I type this, and I can see on Origin I have 310 hours in ME3--mostly MP).
Well, it can only get better. I love the Mass Effect trilogy and they are my favorite game series of all time. Mass Effect 1 is good only for the story. Character development and fighting scenes are horrid. Mass Effect 2 has the best character development and the fight scenes are very interesting and fun to play. There are many choices as to the class you want to play and it has a more "free" feeling than Mass Effect 1. All the characters added in 2 make the game have much more replay value, as you can start over and choose to stick close to different character. Mass Effect 2 was my favorite, 3 being close behind and 1 at the bottom. Mass effect 3 has the best fight dynamics by far. Everything is smooth, and the whole story is very fun and badass. As for the ending, you can ride the band wagon and say it sucked, but I thought it was an amazing way to end the trilogy. Yeah, I guess BioWare had more potential but I think that was one of the most emotional and soul touching endings in any video game. Only Mass Effect can you actually feel the relations with characters and treat big decisions as you would in real life. The multiplayer option in 3 is very addicting and very fun if you have friends to play it with. Again, the bandwagon will say that it sucks and is "not a real Mass Effect game", but I think it was a great innovation. Have fun and don't get discouraged from Mass Effect 1.
Maybe I was too harsh on ME3, I just remember I hyped myself up so much for the game and the ending really shook me up to the point I was checking the bioware twitter and the PR lady who basically trolled everyone for months until EC came out and I no longer cared. Really soured me a lot and I was expecting a lot of stuff to happen in the game that never did. I read the leaked script and was most excited for the mission into one of the reaper's slaughter houses and of course it was taken out.
It's a good game, overall, I just like everything about ME2 more. Not like one bad egg in the bunch ruins a series, I love Alien and Aliens but Alien 3 didn't ruin the series for me.
