Topic Ready to build a media PC,component advice?
(For Kal, I can't find my laptop thread, but I saw your reply, thank you. Mom's puter will be there Monday!)
OK, so I caught some 3TB hard drives on Black Friday deals, so I am ready to buy parts to build a PC to connect to my TV. My biggest question is about getting the sound from the computer to the TV? When I plug my laptop into the TV, the sound goes through the HDMI automatically, but when I plug my PC into a TV, it doesn't. Whatever you guys recommend for this, I want the sound to go through the HDMI to the TV, so that the TV is playing the sound, not computer speakers.
For a case, *if possible* I would love one that lays flat, rather than tall, but I need 4 spots for 3.5" hard drives and 2 spots for DVD drives. (Would fit ON my entertainment center, a tower will have to go beside it) Leaning toward HAF912 if I have to go with a tall tower, unless someone can recommend something better. (I'm pretty happy with my HAF912 I bought for the computer Kal helped me build)
I remember Kal said AMD was fine for this type of PC? But I'm clueless as to what to buy.
I know I need motherboard, RAM, case, power supply, and I'm not sure about video card.
Haven't really set a budget, was waiting on HDDs to come down before I built this, I don't want to spend a fortune, but I don't want to underspend, either.
Will be used for light web surfing, streaming Netflix/Amazon/Hulu/YouTube, playing DVDs and for ripping DVDs to the HDDs for playback.
Will connect to the internet via wifi.

In order for HDMI (on PC) to transmit audio to TV, you have to change few things.
1) Install HDMI audio driver (generally included by default with your video card install, unless you manually unchecked it)
2) Most importantly, change your Windows' main playback device (Control Panel -> Sound) to one of the HDMI output
This will work
And yes, AMD works perfectly for media center -- pick up cheap A6, FM2 A55 mobo, DDR3-1600 RAM, etc. You won't need a video card for a media center PC.
Thank you for telling me how to make the sound work with HDMI!
Totally lost me on the mobo, will the one below work, or can you recommend a better choice?
G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL9D-8GBRL
CORSAIR Builder Series CX430 430W ATX12V v2.3 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Active PFC Power Supply
COOLER MASTER Elite 430 RC-430-KWN1 Black Steel / Plastic Computer Case
If that works, could you verify that the case and mobo will support 3 HDDs and 2 DVD drives? Would you recommend Win7 or Win8 for this project?
Thanks much for your help!

Don't get the E-series cpus. If you're putting this system in a full size case anyway, there's no reason to get an ultra low power cpu. If you build around this you'll be satisfied: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.1102165
The board has hdmi and sata3, plus it happens to be the cheapest combo with that cpu.
That coolermaster case would work, but it's priced a bit high at the moment. The 431 Plus is on sale if you like the looks of the 430: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119256&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-_-na-_-na-_-na&AID=10446076&PID=3938566&SID=
Also take a look at this one, which has cable management, a spot to mount a 2.5" drive (SSD), and is otherwise very comparable: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811553003
The Antec 300 is on sale as well; it's built like a tank: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811129042&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-_-na-_-na-_-na&AID=10446076&PID=3938566&SID=
Zalman Z9 Plus: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811235027&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-_-na-_-na-_-na&AID=10446076&PID=3938566&SID=
This is a good price on the NZXT Gamma with no rebates to fool with: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B002UDK9U6/?tag=pcpapi-20
Also this BitFenix: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811345015
All of those cases will support the drives you need.
Too keep it smaller, check out this Silverstone: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811163223
Or, finally, the Coolermaster 342 which comes with an Elite Power 400w power supply, which, while not 80+, is adequate and reliable. http://pcpartpicker.com/part/cooler-master-case-rc342kkrjgp
It's too bad it's sold out currently at NCIX. Should be back soon though.
Thank you! I got the mobo combo and Cougar case you recommended and the power supply I posted above. Got Crucial RAM because my wish list said the RAM above was sold out (it really wasn't, but I didn't find that out til after I ordered the Crucial from TD). Grabbed Win7 on a Cyber Monday deal, as well.
So a case, PSU, mobo/cpu combo, RAM, 2 DVD/RWs, 3 3TB HDDs, Win7, and a Logitech K400 keyboard....did I get everything I need?
