1 Tauren Warrior
I am a guild leader of a guild that is now approaching 5 years. I have seen many members come and go. When I started my guild it was the classic case of someone trying to start something for a few friends. We were tired of elitist guilds. I had seen people be mistreated by their guild leaders and their officers. And I vowed to myself that wouldn't happen.
I was optimistic and hopeful. So with 6 friends we started our guild. Within one year we went from this purely friends guild to being a 25man raiding guild. We dealt with outside forces on our server who didn't like our success and sadly over time we would go from 300 active members back down to 100. Then Cata came and we retooled and started anew.. and at our height we got all the way up to nearly a thousand members. WE had 6 10man raiding teams.
It was sucessfull but it was stressful. Managing so many personalities and dealing with the competition between the teams. Lead to alot of drama. TEams fought over members .. There were cliques formed.. and sadly I began to see my officer team begin to exhibit the same elitist attitudes that had turned me off many guilds in the past.
Something had to change I was having discussions with my officers trying to get many to remember what brought the guild together in the first place. But there was a clique with my officers who didn't want to change. They felt they were better then folks in the guild. They had stopped being the leaders and teachers we were . We were great at working with new people and elevating their play. They used to instill loyalty. Now they installed frustration. I began to realize I had to change somethings. I put together a set of rules and guidelines for the guild. So going forward it would eliminate alot of the past issues that had occurred.
We lost many and I realized it was best to try and bring us back together.. But like humpty dumpty all the kings horses couldn't bring those teams unified again. So I made the drastic change I had identified a group that wasn't willing to change for the better. And then I made the choice I removed 2 of the biggest thorns to that cohesion and I watched about 12 active total members leave. Those who formed their own guild.. sadly their issues never changed.
Instead of starting fresh on their own they twisted the frustations and sadness of those who remained and targeted those who had issue with what I done.. and they recruited them out of the guild. Instead of having 6 teams.. we were down to 1.
Many that remained were frustrated. They were saddened and Even my optimism began to wane. I talked with my remaining officers and decided that maybe it was time we moved. WEnt to a new realm and started fresh with out all that past emotional baggage and history.
At the same time.. I personally was going through some professional drama.. and it was stressing me. And I didn't want to have my issues affect the guild.
And then.. I made a change. And now I had time. And While finally beginning to level an alt.. I began the simple basic process of dealing with other players on our realm. I stepped back and just started playing to have fun again. It rekindled the love I had for dealing with new people and making friends and just playing wow. And while talking to one of my longest friends in the guild who had to step away I realized I had been pushing myself to hard. It was best to let things naturally flow and grow. For the first time in a year I log into Wow as my guild leader and I am calm. And so I made some further necessary changes and now I can see a light at the end of the tunnel. Our guild is not going away we are not going to breaking up or moving. We are just going to evolve and change for the better. And I know in about a month we will hit our 5 year anniversary and I couldn't be happier.
Some times when your guild is facing an end. its best to just. step back... and do other things.. and let your mind rest from it and ideas will come to you.
Ozzeus celebrating.. 5 years as a guild leader and still loving it.
that is verry true, sometimes it is best to take a step back so you can get a better look at whats going on.
i know how fustrating it can be when someone gets mad at you and atempts to pull guild members away from your guild to thiers or for the sake of trying to get back at you
i know is can be hard sometimes to kick someone if you have known them for a wile in there is a problem, im been in that same place but i had to remove them for the better of the guild as hard as that was.
currently im stuck in a similer rut with my guild, after MOP came out the server went fomr quiet to barly living. sadly the server change caused many members to leave the guild and the server. sadly in my case i feel that moveing the guild is the better option at the moment. we onl came to this after many of the guildies have also agreed that moving seems like the best thing to do. the good thing in our case is that those members will be foollowing the guild once it moves.
