Hunter PVE Compendium
Hello fellow hunters! I put this together to help answer some of the most common questions that we see on the forums. This for PVE only and everything in here is subject to change. I welcome any suggestions/changes/additions that you may have to offer. Thank you :) Two threads to check out: "You Rolled a Hunter, Now What?" by Whim http://us.battle.net/wow/en/forum/topic/8480658242 "Hunter Pet Guide" by Paksanarian http://us.battle.net/wow/en/forum/topic/7978879416?page=1 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ I. Stats Hit and Expertise required to hit a raid boss in MoP: Hit - 7.5% (2550) Draenei - 2210 Expertise - 7.5% (2550) Troll - 2210 Dwarf - 2210 Hit and Expertise required to hit a 5 man heroic boss in MoP: 6% - 2040 rating Agility is the primary stat, regardless of spec. After you are hit and expertise capped your stat priorities are (for BM, SV): Crit > Mastery > Haste For MM: Crit > Haste > Mastery Note: There are haste thresholds. Meaning haste will be useless until you hit the next threshold. See the Elitist Jerks MM forum for more detailed information about this: http://elitistjerks.com/f74/t130571-mop_marksmanship_guide/ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ A. Reforging Use an addon like Reforge Lite or the website WoW Reforge. http://www.curse.com/addons/wow/reforgelite http://www.wowreforge.com Plug in the value of each stat for importance and it will reforge your gear for you. Here is a screen shot of my toon on wowreforge.com: http://i.imgur.com/JGElN.jpg Notice in the red area the value of hit and expertise are highest, since they are the most important. Next I made Crit 2.0 to ensure it would get priority over Mastery and Haste. The green text turn red when it's an item you need to reforge. It shows what you currently have and what you need to turn it into. Thanks to Adarant for the following: What follows is a short guide for those that use www.wowreforge.com but have upgraded their gear. By default, Wow Reforge does not detect gear upgrade, which often leads to inaccurate reforging results. You can, however, manually adjust your gear so that your results are valid. How to use www.wowreforge.com when you have upgrades for your gear: 1. In one browser window or tab, open your character profile in the Battle.net Armory. This is for reference purposes. 2. Mouse over your upgraded gear and write down the new stats on that piece of gear. Repeat this step for all of your upgraded gear. You will refer to this list in later steps. 3. In a second browser window or tab, open www.wowreforge.com and import your character as normal. 4. For each upgraded piece of gear, click on that piece of gear to open the Change Item window. In the Change Item window, you can modify the stats on that piece of gear. For example, the LFR Taoren has 647 Haste and 704 Mastery at 0/2 upgrades. At 1/2 upgrades, the item has 671 Haste and 731 Mastery. So if you have a once upgraded LFR Taoren, you would replace the 647 in the Haste field with 671 and the 704 in the Mastery field with 731. 5. Repeat Step #4 for each piece of upgraded loot. 6. Adjust your stat weights as normal. 7. Run the reforging process as normal. Note: These settings are not persistent. If you navigate off www.wowreforge.com, you must reenter all of your upgrades again. When you click the Template Link, Save, or Reforge Direct Link buttons, your customizations are lost. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ B. Gems Unless the socket bonus is 80 agility or higher, always gem pure red (agility). Never gem straight haste/expertise/mastery/hit. Meta - Red/Prismatic - Yellow - Blue - Sha Touched Gem - Meta - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ C. Enchants Shoulder - Chest - Wrist - Gloves - Cloak - Belt - Legs - Boots - Blurred Speed Weapon - Rings - Greater Agility if an enchanter ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ D. Food/Flask/Potion Food: When cooking you want to learn the Way of the Wok. This provides our agility food. There are 3 levels of food you can make, each requiring more expensive ingredients: Sauteed Carrots - 250 agility Valley Stir Fry - 275 agility Sea Mist Rice Noodles - 300 agility Flask: Flask of Spring Blossoms - 1000 agility Potion: Virmen's Bite - 4000 agility for 25 seconds ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |

II. Spec
What spec should you be? (level 90, PVE) BM for single target fights. - Most raid bosses SV for AoE fights. - 5 man instance, challenge modes, AoE boss fights An example of a boss fight you might go SV: Heroic Feng in MSV if you have weak AoE on the adds. Normal (and maybe heroic) Wind Lord in HoF. Heroic Will of the Emperor (travel time on the pet can cut down DPS) What spec should you level as? Honestly all 3 specs work just fine for leveling. Tame a pet you think looks prettiest, spec it Tenacity, and have fun with it. A. Glyphs Glyph of Animal Bond is pretty much the only one that is required. For the 2nd and 3rd you can use what best suits you. Either Glyph of Deterrence for fights where you have to soak a large amount of damage, like heroic Elagon, heroic Will, Tortos, heroic Jin'rokh, Ji'kun, and Lei Shen. (Credit to Bullettime): For MM spec Glyph of Chimera Shot should be the base. However, use Glyph of Aimed Shot if a fight has required movement during your Careful Aim window (possibly Magaera). Glyph of Liberation is really handy for quickly getting out of situations while also providing a heal, like normal and heroic Horridon, Iron Qon, and Lei Shen. Glyph of Misdirection when questing. Minor Glyphs: It's pretty free-for-all for minor glyphs. Some to consider: Glyph of Stampede - makes your pets all identical. You can use this if you do not need any additional buffs covered. Glyph of Aspect of the Pack - nice for running back as a group after a wipe. Glyph of the Cheetah. Glyph of Revive Pet. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ B. Spec Level 15: Crouching Tiger, Hidden Chimera Level 30: Silencing Shot, or Binding Shot depending on what you need Level 45: Aspect of the Iron Hawk Level 60: Dire Beast (single target and MM spec) or Fervor or Thrill of the Hunt (AoE) Level 75: Murder of Crows (single target) or Lynx Rush (when targets die too quickly to benefit from the full duration of Crows) Level 90: Glaive Toss or Barrage (AoE) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ III. Pets Pet's damage was normalized, meaning they do the same damage. Bring the pet that fills the missing buff/debuff in your party. For soloing, a Spirit Beast for the heal or Wolf for the crit are a good choice. Otherwise pick what you think looks the prettiest. For a complete list of every tamable pet in the game and guides how to obtain them: http://www.wow-petopia.com/ For a video and chart of each pet's abilities: http://kallipets.blogspot.com/2012/09/hunter-pet-buffs-debuffs-and-utility.html Don't know what every class brings to the group? An extremely helpful addon is Raid Check List. It shows which buffs/debuffs are missing and which ones you can provide. All you have to know is which pet to bring. If you bring the right pet out, it turns from blue (missing) to green (covered) in the list. http://www.curse.com/addons/wow/raid_checklist ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ A. Stampede Courtesy of Adarant When I use Stampede, what abilities can I expect my pet to use? During Stampede, you control your active pet as you normally would. The 4 summoned pets, however, are restricted in the abilities that they can use. Any abilities that are set to auto-cast when you last dismissed your pet will be used according to their normal usage rules. Abilities that are not set to auto-cast will not be used by your summoned pets. Abilities that cannot be set to auto-cast, Ancient Hysteria and Eternal Guardian for example, cannot be used by the pets summoned by Stampede. You cannot use macros to bypass the auto-cast restrictions. Here are some examples of what you can expect during Stampede: 1. If you leave Growl on auto-cast for a summoned pet, that pet will use Growl on cooldown if they are not at the top of the threat table. If Growl is not set to auto-cast, your summoned pet will never Growl. If you have a macro that contains the line "/cast Growl", then your active pet will Growl, but none of your summoned pets will Growl. This goes for all pet abilities that can be set to auto-cast, including but not limited to Growl, Rabid, Web, Demoralizing Roar, and Furious Howl. 2. Assume your active pet is a Corehound and you have "/cast Ancient Hysteria" in a macro. If you use that macro during Stampede, then your active Corehound will use Ancient Hysteria as expected. Assume your active pet is not a Corehound, but one of your summoned pets is a Corehound. If you use your Ancient Hysteria macro during Stampede, your Corehound will not cast Ancient Hysteria. This goes for all abilities that cannot be set to auto-cast, including but not limited to Ancient Hysteria, Eternal Guardian, Froststorm Breath, and Burrow Attack. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ IV. Rotation There is no set rotation for a hunter, but we do have a priority. This means if you have to choose between hitting one of two abilities, you hit the one that is the most important. Here is the order of importance for our abilities: A. BM For opening burst here is an exmple of what you can do: When there is less than a second between your Bestial Wrath and Kill Command, you want to Wrath before you Kill Command. Do not wait more than 1 second on this though, just use your Kill Command if there is more time than this. B. SV SV's main purpose is for AoE. Fights like normal Windlord phase 1 benefit greatly from this spec. You can use either Barrage or Glaive Toss (use Glaive Toss if the fear of channeling while wind bombs is an issue). Spec Thrill of the Hunt for Multi Shot spam. Use Explosive Trap on CD, Multi Shot when Thrill of the Hunt procs, use Glaive Toss/Barrage on CD, and Lynx Rush on CD. Rapid fire on CD, Readiness to use Rapid fire again (while Barrage/Glaive Toss is on CD). C. MM Credit to Bullettime Serpent StingEnough Haste to use Aimed Shot outside of Careful Aim is when your Aimed Shot is at the 1.4 second mark, common during Rapid Fire and Heroism. Aimed Shot is a loss outside of those windows. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |

VI. Macros
For an in-depth guide to macros see Strlder's Hunter macro guide: http://us.battle.net/wow/en/forum/topic/2416111670 **Note: With the change to Cobra/Steady shot being castable while moving, you will need a /stopcasting macro so you can quickly cancel this when needed. You can either create a separate keybind and use: /stopcastingOr macro it to abilities that you would need to stop a cast in order to use immediately. For example: Other abilities to consider attaching a stopcast macro to are silence shot, scatter shot, and kill shot. DO NOT macro these into all your normal abilities! This will make it so you can't spam your abilities. One /stopcasting stops your auto shot, and the other cancels your cobra/steady shot. To prevent your aspect from turning off due to multiple clicks: Mouseover Silence and Scatter shot: To have your pet use Kill Command on your current target: Always cast Misdirection on your pet unless you have a focus target: To use then cancel Deterrence on the same keybind: To cancel Deterrence or a Pally's Hand of Protection using arcane shot: #showtooltip Arcane Shot------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ A. Key Bindings Everyone's bindings will be different. You should bind them to how it makes sense to YOU. Remember that keyboard turning (A and D) aren't necessary. Same goes with backpeddling (S), so binding these to abilities is useful and the buttons are easy to reach. That being said, here is an example using my own key bindings: BM Spec: 1: Kill Command------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ VII. Professions Blacksmith: 2 extra sockets for potential 320 agility if using Jewelcrafting: 2 bonus gems Inscription: Alchemy: Mixology bonus that gives 320 agility. Also flasks last 2 hours instead of 1. Engineering: Synapse Springs, as well as Tinker's Gear which goes in cog sockets and gives 600 of a certain stat. Leatherworking: Cheap bracer enchant that is 320 agility higher than the normal enchant. Enchanting: Enchant Ring Agility - 160 agility to each ring Tailoring: 4000 attack power proc that lasts 15 seconds on approx a 1 min CD. Mining: 480 stamina Herbalism: 2880 haste for 20s every 2 minutes and heals 13875 - 16125. Equivalent of 480 passive haste. Skinning: 480 crit rating ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ VIII. Race Listed in order from best to worst DPS for each faction. For Pandas they are neck and neck with the top race (Worgen and Troll). The differences are very minor between each of the races. At the end of the day pick whichever race you personally think looks best if DPS isn't that big of a factor for you. Check out http://www.femaledwarf.com to compare the races for your toon. The following list order was plugged into femaledwarf.com in all BiS gear with simulated all buffs and debuffs. Orc comes out on top by over 1000 DPS (121627.61), followed by Panda (120747.58). The lowest is Blood Elf at 119265.48. Alliance Pandaren - double food buff effectiveness, 50% less fall damage taken. Worgen - 1% crit. Draenei - 20% heal, 1% hit. Dwarf - 1% expertise, remove diseases, bleeds, poison, and reduces damage by 10% for 8 seconds (2 minute CD). Human - Remove effects that cause loss of control with your character (2 min CD). Night elf - threat drop. Horde Orc - 15% reduced stun effects, 2% increased pet damage, increase attack power by 4514 for 15 seconds (2 min CD). Pandaren - double food buff effectiveness, 50% less fall damage taken. Troll - 20% casting speed (3 min CD), 10% increased health regen during combat, 5% bonus damage against beasts, 1% expertise, 15% movement impairment reduction. Undead - Remove charm, sleep, and fear (2 min CD), shadow damage chance on hit that also heals you. Goblin - rocket jump, belt rockets, 1% cast speed increase. Tauren - Stun enemies within 8 yards for 2 seconds (2 min CD), 5% base health. Blood elf - focus restore and silence enemies within 8 yards for 3 seconds (2 min CD). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |

Boss Encounters This is just a brief breakdown of what you can do as a hunter on each of these fights. For a complete walkthrough of the mechanics of each fight, I highly recommend watching the Fatboss videos: http://www.youtube.com/user/fatbosstv A. Mogu'shan Vaults 1. The Stone Guard Deterrence and break cobalt mines throughout the fight. Heroic: Continue to DPS while running/activating tiles. 2. Feng the Accursed If you have Arcane Resonance and an Arance Velocity is about to go out, use Deterrence. If your group stacks After Arcane Velocity, disengage out of the group with 1 second left on Feng's cast to avoid Arcane Resonance possibly hitting everyone. Heroic: Drop a frost trap on the adds when he throws his shield to keep them slowed and entering the shield. Consider going SV with ToTH if your group is having an issue with add DPS. 3. Gara'jal the Spiritbinder Heroic: Focus the large adds when inside the totem to assist your tank when he gets ported. 4. The Spirit Kings Subetai the Swift - (normal and heroic) Disengage perpendicular to him when he fires volley. You can also Disengage out of pinning arrows if you are quick enough. He will turn to face the direction he is about to pin. Heroic: Meng the Demented - you can Tranq Shot Demented off of him. 5. Elegon Heroic: Glyph for Deterrence and soak the blast from the add outside the ring. 6. Will of the Emperor Frost trap where the rage adds spawn and keep them slowed. Disengage to get behind Courage add so you can DPS from behind. Consider SV for this fight, as pet travel time will hurt your DPS. The adds die too quickly to gain full benefit of black arrow, so try to keep it up on the boss throughout the entire fight for LnL procs. Heroic: Deterrence and soak the sparks. B. Heart of Fear 1. Imperial Vizier Zor'lok Do not let your pet get to the platform that the boss flies to before your tank or he will get one shot. You can move and continue your DPS rotation without missing a beat while avoiting Attrition orbs. 2. Blade Lord Ta'yak CAREFULLY Disengage through the hallway of tornadoes to get to the other side. Send your pet to the boss and Kill Command while you work your way through the tornadoes. Heroic: Disengage immediately after being sucked in to the boss during phase one. You can do it mid air or right after you land. 3. Garalon Kite the pheromones without missing your rotation. Stand on the edge of the previous puddle so they overlap and do not take up too much space in the room. On heroic difficulty the room fills up quickly. Stand in the green circle on a leg (when not kiting) so you and your pet receives the damage bonus. 4. Wind Lord Mel'jarak Spec SV for this with Thrill of the Hunt. Use Explosive Trap on cooldown. Spam Multi Shot. Heroic: BM or SV. The single target burst of BM is fantastic once the boss has the debuff after killing one add. 5. Amber-Shaper Un'sok 6. Grand Empress Shek'zeer Once the trap is formed, Distracting Shot the large add into (if your tanks don't do it) Disengage out of the group when you get debuffed in the final phase to prevent fearing everyone. C. Terrace of Endless Spring 1. Protectors of the Endless Heroic: Throw a glyphed ice trap in the path of the add to keep it slowed throughout the fight. If you have a warlock with you, their slow is much better. So keep your trap closer to the boss to act as an emergency slow. 2. Tsulong Normal and heroic: Throw frost traps (glyphed) where the Unstable Sha spawn to keep them slowed. Use disengage to get away from the light beams before they explode (heroic). If healing is an issue, you can use a macro to spirit mend Tsulong. 3. Lei Shi Normal and heroic: Throw a frost trap on the furthest Animated Protector that spawns to attempt to catch it. Also wyrven sting an add. Keep an eye on her timers. If a special is coming, do not use CDs like Murder of Crows or Stampede. Wait to see if it's a Get Away and not a Hide so they do not go to waste. 4. Sha of Fear Disengage in or out of the cone to DPS the Terror Spawn or get out before the Breath of Fear goes out. When teleported to the outter shrine, you can move and DPS while soaking all the Sha Globes (the orbs). When The crossbowman uses Death Blossom, use Deterrence and continue soaking all the Globes. If timed correctly you might only take one tick of of Death Blossom. Heroic: Make a macro to throw the ball. I use: /target [@mouseover]%N will show the person's name in /say. |

D. Throne of Thunder
1. Jin'rokh the Breaker Normal: Heroic: 2. Horridon Normal: Recommend you take Fervor for this fight since Thrill of the Hunt may not proc at the right times and Lynx Rush may not hit every target. You have a lot of control with Fervor. Keep black arrow, serpent sting, and crows on boss. Your stampede should come up during the last door. If you are having an issue downing Jalak in a timely manner, you may want to hold off on using stampede until he comes out. Set your pet on passive and keep him on boss the entire time. The constant running round to targets is a DPS loss. Your serpent spread (SV) will be just fine. Heroic: The only main difference is the addition of your very own pink dinosaur (direhorn spirit) who wants to kill you. You are the only person who can see this and it is solely your job to take care of it. It cannot be killed but can be knocked back with any ability and/or your pet. You can make a keybind to send your pet onto the direhorn while he is walking through the boss to get to you. WARNING: if you leave your pet on the dino too long it will phase bug and may hit another raid member. You will know when it becomes bugged when the line connecting the dino to you is no longer there. Keep sending your pet back onto the boss when the pink dino is at a safe distance. If you choose not to use your pet, this macro may be handy: /target direhorn spirit3. Council of Elders Normal: Heroic: 4. Tortos Normal: If you are on turtle kicking duty, here is your stop casting and use the kick shell extra action button macro: /stopcastingHeroic: You should be on Misdirect duty. There will be a bat tank. Make a focus macro. They will appear every time just as your Barrage is off cooldown. If you choose not to use Barrage, make sure you have enough focus to use a few Multishots on the bats. Here is a macro to target the humming crystal to gain your shield buff. Make sure you are next to any crystal and your back isn't turned to it: /tar humming5. Megaera Normal: Heroic: 6. Ji-Kun Normal: Whenever you have your feather charge (you'll see an extra action button you can use), fly up direction above the boss when she casts Feed Young and catch the green goo. This must be caught mid air and can only be done if you have a feather. Primal Nutriment - Successfully catching one of Ji-Kun's food globules mid-air increases the player's damage and healing by 30% for 30 seconds. Also increases damage and healing by an additional 10% each time it's applied, up to a maximum of 200%. Watch DBM timers and make sure you are under the boss before a Down Draft occurs. This will attempt to push you off the platform. You can turn and use disengage with post haste or the disengage glyph can help in a pinch. Make sure you have an extra action button macro for easy use of your wings. /stopcastingHeroic: (see normal) 7. Durumu the Forgotten Normal: Heroic: 8. Primordius Normal: Heroic: 9. Dark Animus Normal: Heroic: 10. Iron Qon 11. Twin Consorts Normal: Heroic: 12. Lei Shen Normal: Heroic: 13. Ra-den Heroic: |

The agility required for a socket bonus to be worth taking is 60, not 80. However, do not take a socket bonus if it requires using more than 1 non-delicate gem. Just wanted to add that correction.
Also, the opener you listed can use a lot of improvements. During bestial wrath, you dont want to be wasting global cooldowns on stuff like dire beast and stampede. Instead, try to maximize your bestial wrath time by ensuring you wont have to refresh serpent sting, and by not wasting globals as mentioned above. For example, I go: Serpent Sting Glaive Toss Dire Beast Rapid Fire + Stampede Macro Bestial Wrath + Kill Command Macro Murder of Crows Arcane Shots...Go from here I want to stress how important it is to keep serpent sting up while also making the most of bestial wrath. During the opener, you want to be able to get sting up, use your first wrath, readiness/use 3 kill commands within the first wrath, and then use cobra shots after it is over to refresh your sting before using your second wrath. Avoid using cobra shot during bestial wrath at all costs, however i believe it is still worth using if your sting will fall off otherwise, though sometimes i find myself just casting a fresh SS at half cost. Just some improvements that could be made. Overall definitely a good guide though for anyone looking for easy information. |
Serpent Sting Not sure about that. Why don't we want GT under BW? I can see leaving the first DB outside of BW, although it's a fairly small improvement. You can also time your second DB between BW's. Now that I think of it, you could probably also time your CoS in that place too. Your 2nd BW would be delayed a GCD or two, but that shouldn't affect anything long term, and you gain another AS or two while under BW. And yes, using CoS to keep Sting up is worth it during BW. |
Serpent Sting Glaive Toss has an extremely high chance to proc trinkets, a lot of that having to do from the fact that it is 2 projectiles. That is why I use the first glaive toss right away, to try to get trinket procs going before the rest of cooldowns. As for keeping that first serpent sting up, I wait until the readiness double kill command, then depending on how far the target is from me I either glaive toss as well or immediately get 1 cobra shot off. Then glaive toss, then another cobra shot, dire beast, then use the second bestial wrath. Also refresh rapid fire a few seconds later. I guess you could consider all of these "small improvements" but DPS is all about min/maxing, why not do what's best? |

Good guide, glad it was stickied!

Glaive Toss has an extremely high chance to proc trinkets, a lot of that having to do from the fact that it is 2 projectiles. That is why I use the first glaive toss right away, to try to get trinket procs going before the rest of cooldowns. GT doesn't 'have an extremely high chance' to proc trinkets, it just hits twice. I don't think fishing for procs with GT will show a DPS increase. Trinkets often don't proc until 15+ seconds into the fight, so I don't think it's reliable enough to be losing out on consistent damage. Also not sure about delaying the 2nd BW more than a GCD or two because if you do you're losing your pre-pot during or before the 2nd BW which is pretty significant. Keeping SrS up is definitely an increase and only requires 1-2 CoS, which you can cast during RF. |
