I see a few talents in the talent tree that do damage; do they fit well into smite healing's rotation? Do they increase damage done? What would an optimal spec/rotation look like?
I pretty much heal heroics near-exclusively with Atonement. It's basically Holy Fire and Penance on CD, then smite smite smite, making sure to keep up Power Word: Shield and PoM.
If heavy AOE damage comes in, I, of course, stop smiting and hit Archangel to boost my heals while I heal everyone up. :)

Agreed. And if you glyph into Holy Fire and Smite, and spec into Power Infusion, and use Mindbender on cooldown, that damage might be better than some ... albeit 'bad'... dps.
The heals are extremely mana efficient, and I've easily - that is, using no cooldowns - topped the charts in LFR using Atonement exclusively, save for heavy raid damage. Pop wings and go to town.
