So first off, I’m not a high-rated player (or high end raider) so my opinion probably doesn’t carry a lot of weight, but I’ll share it anyway.
I like the change. I know, I’m not high rated so of course I’d be for it is. IMO, PvP is always at its best when the concept of “skill > gear” is being utilized. So for example, three people start the season late in arenas. Let’s say they’re skilled and push for 2200, but are stuck at the 2k range because every team they face is fully equipped with T2, thereby making the matches more about gear than skill (we’ll say the matches they lose are close losses and can be attributed to the ilvl difference for the sake of this argument). Of course, if the team is skilled enough, they could probably still outplay the team with the T2. But shouldn’t PvP always be primarily about out playing, not out gearing?
I feel like the rating, titles, and mounts are the reward for the highly skilled players and no amount of conquest will award that. Gear should be the reward for the time invested (which is basically the way the new model will work 27k conquest = Elite gear).
So, the caveat argument is “well then why doesn’t heroic gear drop from LFR?” I don’t think this argument works. PvP and PvE are obviously two different entities. PvE progression (from my experience in DS) is a gear and skill test, but gear is much more a factor than PvP. For example, a high end raiding guild is pushing progression, and gets the boss to within a few percent of falling over, and the raid wipes due to enrage timer. They’re all skilled and know their class so it’s not due to incompetency; it’s just going to take an additional week of gearing up for everyone to add an addition 1k to their DPS to get this fight down. So they know the fight, know their class, but they just don’t have the gear to down said boss just yet. What I’m saying is, Paragon is some of the most skilled raiders in the world, and they can’t just complete a new raid the same night it comes out. It’s designed to require a certain ilvl.
Not sure if that’s a good example. It’s just two different models that can’t really be compared to each other IMO.
So hopefully we get some good discussion. I’m open to anyone pointing out some holes in my way of thinking. Hopefully we can keep it civil. Just want to see what other players are thinking (specifically the higher rated PvP’ers).
TL:DR I like turkey sammiches.
