Why not? What about AoE and cleave? You're leaving a big part of the dps situation out of your picture.
According to GC, the trade-off for ret is that we are good on single target and weak on AoE and cleave. I can accept that design goal. But being poor at sustained and good on burst doesn't make us good on single target, it make us what we are: average on single target and poor on AoE/Cleave.
We should have average sustained and good burst to counter our weakness on AoE/cleave situations. We should be a preferred dps spec to have on single target fights to balance the fact that we aren't a great choice for big add or cleave situations.
I would argue that if, as GC has stated very recently, ret is designed to be good on single target and weak on AoE and cleave, they haven't met that design goal yet, because we aren't especially good at single target. We are essentially average at it, albeit with great burst that does matter on a few fights per tier (but not enough to make up for the general perception that ret is a "meh" spec).
