Choosing the right pc

So, I filed my taxes yesterday and I'm getting more money back than I expected. Naturally this has lead to the "how do I spend this money" dilemma. The first thing that popped into my mind was buying a gaming pc. I freely admit that I'm no computer expert. But after reading reviews on various processor lines, I've narrowed it down to the following: AMD's FX series and Intel's i5 series. I'm currently using an AMD processor and I always have but tbh I haven't really been impressed by them. But I'm hearing really good things but the i5 3570k.
From what I've read Intel's processors out perform AMD's handily. But I'm not even sure how much power I really need. So here are some of the games I play: WoW (obviously) D3 SC2 Fallout 3 L4D series Company of Heroes Arkham series CoD BioShock series I don't currently stream games that I play, but it's something that I'd like to do whenever I do manage to get a new computer. My budget range is $1000, but I'd obviously like to keep it under that if at all possible. So, if anyone could/would suggest a PC or help me narrow my choices down I would appreciate it. |

Gonna go ahead and pay it forward. This thread has all the info you need to know about picking out PC parts. The games you listed would not be in the high end category for the parts in the thread, so keep that in mind

With a $1k budget, you might as well go Intel. Also, you might consider waiting for Haswell in Q2.

Or you could buy the wii - u, then wait and buy the next xbox, as well as the next PS3.
You'd be set for gaming for the next 10 years or so, without ever having to upgrade a system. |

I've been looking around on new egg and some of their DIY kits are awfully attractive. Yet I've never assembled a computer myself. How hard it is to do so and what tools will I need to go out and buy?

It isn't very hard, and you should only need a screwdriver unless I am blanking on something.

As easy as putting together a set of Lego blocks. As said, the only needful tool is a screwdriver, and even that is relatively minimal. Might need a cable or two, depending on how your case and motherboard and PSU match up, but those aren't exactly tools. |

No joke. Making a small castle of lego's is much more difficult than building a pc.

I hate to keep bumping my own thread, but I keep coming up with new questions and I figured it's better to put them all in one thread than making new ones. I've been doing graphics card research for my future computer.
In the price range that I'm looking at, there are two seemingly similar cards that I'm interested in. They are the Radeon HD 7850 and the GeForce GTX 650 Ti. According to http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/ both cards seem to be pretty similar to each other in terms of performance (with the Radeon being slightly better). However, the Radeon is about $40ish more than the GeForce. Does anyone know if the extra $40 is worth it? |

If you're getting the ~110 dollars 650 Ti with BL2 that's on NewEgg, it's a great deal, and worth getting. The 7850 is probably a bit better, but it's hardly necessary to spend the money. If you're not, take a look at it: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127710 |

I was just looking at pcpartpicker.com and when I got the the operating systems I noticed there are OEM/Full versions of windows 7/8, what's the difference? Also, I've heard a lot of mixed reviews on windows 8. Is it that terrible or are people just afraid of change? |

People are afraid of change, it's not that terrible.
OEM/Full? Depends on the retailer, sometimes it matters, sometimes it doesn't. May just be whether Microsoft offers support or not, so I would get whichever is cheapest. |

Assuming that link works, those are the two contenders. I didn't include a PSU because I have a Corsair Gaming Series 600w PSU in my current computer. Like any intelligent consumer, I want to get the best value for my money, while getting reasonable performance for said money. Opinions on my builds? |

First Build: You don't need a Z77 board if you're not going to overclock, and if so, you should get a processor with a K at the end. Or if you're not, go down to a B75 board and a 3470.
Terrible price on the 650 Ti. Second Build: Don't get a Bulldozer core, get one that's 8320, or if you want to save a few bucks, get a FX-6300. Get a better motherboard. Also terrible price on the 650 Ti. In both cases, you do not need that high speed RAM. 1600 speed is enough for most everybody. Don't get 5400 RPM HDDs, you'll regret it. |

Thanks to your tips, I was able to bring the price down a little for both of them. Since they're within $20 of each other, the Intel is looking more and more attractive. I think I'll probably end up going with that one.

Last one...okay probably not. But I was thinking, will I need to buy any extra fans for my case? I worry about ventilation and keeping my system cool. Like I said earlier, I'm not planning on overclocking anything in this system.
