Priest vs Shaman
Thanks for any help
01/30/2013 10:13 AMPosted by KreyynRank 4 on Lei shi heroic for Rsham, but if I were a disc priest I'd barely rank at around the 190 range!
Take a closer look at worldoflogs. Disc priests own more records than any other spec.... By a lot. Paladins and monks are up there too, but shamans fall pretty far behind for most fights. Thankfully shaman do get a couple of fights geared towards them, but not many.
Simple truth: Priests put out way better numbers over shamans in all but a couple fights. Nerfs will bring them down a little, but with gear scaling they will still be the top spec.

Shamans have recently done very well in PVP, and are being nerfed a bit to bring them closer to the rest of healers.

Don't try to play find an OverPowered spec, you'll just be sad when it is nerfed.
Play what you like.
Burst limited range healing - Amazing heals we can do when stacked close enough.
Utility - Great toolkit with totems and abilites (ex. Purge, Wind Shear, Tremor Totem ect.)
Versitility - Great tank healing at the same time as great raid healing. (ex. Riptide tank + chain heals through him healing mdps, healing stream + healing rain on ranged group = healing everyone)
ABSORBS - great for most fights (ex. Absorbs work great on Parasitic Growth on Heroic Amber Shaper)
Preventative healing - Disc Priests are all about anticipating the damage and reducing it or negating it completely.
Attonement - Disc priests can provide the highest damage output for any healer right now through attonement while healing at the same time. Great for fights that you are having trouble on the enrage timer.

As personal dps sure, but stormlash totem, especially in a 25 man setting, will provide more dps to the raid then any priest could manage throughout the whole fight.
01/30/2013 11:39 AMPosted by XanaxerHere's some strenghts for both classes that I've picked up from a 10m perspective.
Also you're wrong, heres a sample from one of our earlier lei shi kills where we had a disc priest.
Total damage from the priests Pennance + Smite + Holy Fire = 5.8 mil
Total damage from the stormlash = 1.8 mil
Like I said earlier...this is from a 10m perspective. I'm sure it'd be different in a 25m setting.
A different perspective: There aren't enough Shamans ever, and there's always an overabundance of Priests.
Priests are fun to play, and usually you can figure out what specs you want given the fact that there's always changes to them through the expansions. I do have to say that I'm enjoying my Shammy and will try to get her geared and into my normal raid group. Then I can raid on my Priest with a different group.
Both have some pretty interesting tool kits. Disc and Holy have a ton of things for every situation, so you have to be ready with so many things. Shammy's are more straightforward, with a bunch of situational things that can really help (i.e. Totems).
Being an occassional PvP'er says to me you're not looking to be uber competitive. But if you go that route, I think Shammy wins in the long run. I love speccing Holy / Disc, but had to repsec to Shadow for PvP and lack of decent DPS in my raid group. Right now, Priests are going through a ton of changes because of its PvP performances. Shadow is getting nerfed, Holy and Disc are getting buffed.
I've always enjoyed Elemental more than Shadow. Thunderstorm always makes me scream like Sofia Vergara in the Hunger Games SNL skit when I PvP as Elemental. "BOOM! HUNGER GAMES!!!" But Elemental is not really viable for PvP. Resto's where it's at.
Good luck - both classes are fun. Decide which off specs you'd like best, decide how competitive you want to be, and then just try them out! Or go to the PTR and get a high level of each class and try them out.
