Of Azeroth and Stormwind

Is the name of Varian's kingdom officially in lore Azeroth or Stormwind? The capital is Stormwind City, but what of the name of the realm?

In WCII, it was Azeroth, and I think in WCIII also, but what in WoW? If it's Stormwind, has that always been its name lore-wise or did it change?

It's the Kingdom of Stormwind, and the name change has been retroactive.

The term "Azeroth" has been redefined several times in Warcraft history. Sometimes it was simply the Human Kingdom, sometimes the continent on which it resides, sometimes the entire Eastern Kingdoms, and sometimes the entire world. To make matters worse, the same source will occasionally use multiple definitions.

However since WoW got off the ground Blizzard has been using it fairly consistently to refer to just the planet as a whole. Making the kingdom, the Kingdom of Stormwind.

How about this for a theory:

Originally the kingdom was called Azeroth. But then the Horde came. The only word the Horde heard to refer to the lands they saw was Azeroth and so they came to refer the entire world as Azeroth. When the goblins aided the Horde in the Second War (WC2) they took the orc name for the planet and went with using it in their dealings. Overtime and the diffusion of language the majority of people's in the world came to refer the planet as Azeroth.

The Stormwind House of Nobles and merchant guilds, in an effort to avoid confusion with foreign governments and commerce began to call the kingdom Stormwind. The populous of Stormwind, however, are not entirely comfortable with the new name for their homeland. As a result there is still a large number of people who refer to the nation as Stormwind while others choose to call it Azeroth.

That's actually not a bad theory. Only question I have is why the Goblins didn't just keep using whatever name they had for the land the Orcs were calling Azeroth?

Not sure, same problem with the other races (including the humans for that matter). Perhaps Azeroth just became a common term that everyone would understand as the name for the planet? The different people's kept their original name/s for the planet but in order to communicate they chose to use Azeroth. Not unlike how English is a commerce language in rl.

Perhaps they didn't have a name for it other than "the world". Irl, we only have the name "Earth" becasue we know of the existance of other planets, which the azerothians didn't until the First War.

As for the Legion invasion, maybe those who knew of it thought they came from hell or whatever. The elves probably had a name for Azeroth in their own tongue

Isn't the term Azeroth used in the War of the Ancients novels?

I'm pretty sure that, even in recent lore, the kingdom had been called Azeroth prior to the end of the Second War.

The in-game book "Aftermath of the Second War" says "The Alliance armies led by Sir Anduin Lothar, Uther the Lightbringer, and Admiral Daelin Proudmoore pushed the orcs south into the shattered land of Azeroth - the first kingdom to fall before the orcs' ruthless onslaught."

So not only was the kingdom called Azeroth during the Second War; history books about the Second War also call it Azeroth.

Would it be similar to calling America the "the kingdom of earth"... Perhaps it was a title given too or a self proclaimed title of the house of wrynn.

I think that the people of Stormwind probably called it Azeroth beforehand but after encounters with Titan artifacts, probably changed the perspective.
