Topic Healer class choice for [5.2] Priest or Monk
Hello fellow healers, I am in a predicament in my preparations for patch 5.2 and would like some advice from those of you who have hopped onto the PTR and can give me some advice on the current state of Monks and Priests.
Currently I have healed through normal t14 with a Shaman and Paladin and plan to continue healing alongside these classes during the next tier. However, after reviewing some of the upcoming changes to monk I am extremely hesitant at remaining with this class through the next tier of content.
My current impression with Monks is that we are continually going to have nerfs to Eminence healing, extreme mana increases to our mana costing spells, a continual removal of choices with chi spending, and overall removal of choice and utility from the class. I am left feeling as if this class will not be able to perform on-par with other healing classes, and my ability to enjoy the class is going to be hampered by mana issues, and clunky class mechanics (such as the new form of Jab + Tiger Power)
However, my backup option is a priest, specifically a Discipline priest. I have been following the nerfs to Discipline, but am left still feeling that due to the mitigation nature of Discipline priest, along with the excellent scaling of Rapture, that across the length of the next tier it would be providing a better, more stable, healing choice than the current state of Monk 5.2
Those of you who have seen these classes in action on the PTR, could you please give me some concise pros/cons of the classes as they currently are on the PTR. I am having difficulty with the decision and am wanting to be playing the class that will provide the most utility and potential for my raid team. I am not looking at playing the FOTM class, only the one that will compliment Shaman/Paladin healing, while still being able to hold its own in regards to mana regeneration, stability, and such.
Also currently lending itself to this decision is the fact that there are only 2 people on the Priest, Warlock, Paladin tier token and 6 on the Monk tier token. This has been the main reason why I have been contemplating switching to a toon that will be able to better delineate the tier tokens.
Any advice provided is greatly appreciated!
I made this decision in 5.1, and switched my main from mistweaver to disc priest. I've been very happy with the switch thus far. This character was my healing main through a great deal of Cata, and it didn't take much time to adjust to priest changes since then. My happiness was further reinforced when I saw the 5.2 monk class patch notes. Chi burst (my pandoken!) is no longer a viable chi dump, and is getting a huge cooldown? Several existing abilities are being changed significantly? A new ability is being added that I'll probably have to incorporate to remain competitive? That's not my idea of fun.
Philosophically-speaking, monks are the new kids on the block. They're bound to get more tweaks over the next year than any other class. But I don't have time to re-learn my class every patch. And frankly, I really ended up resenting my inability to control my heals. Uplift is random because renewing mist is random. Mastery-spawned healing spheres are random. Your single-target abilities are soothing (too weak on its own), soothing-surging (unsustainable, far too expensive), and soothing-enveloping (not spammable due to significant chi cost, and ends up being mostly overheal on non-tanks anyway). I was quite capable of pumping out the HPS as a raid-healing mistweaver, but I wasn't able to fully control who got them. I mean, as a disco I can save anyone at the last second with a bubble and penance. I feel more in control and we had fewer raid deaths after I made the switch. In retrospect, because we didn't already have a disc priest this expansion...welp, it was a no-brainer.
If it were 25-man raiding, I might recommend sticking with monk. SCK and spheres are far stronger when you're herding 2.5x more cats. But I feel that priests are stronger than monks in a 10-man environment. SCK has fantastic flavor, but a poor return on investment in 10-mans. Of course I'm biased, but IMO every raid should have a disc. I don't think you'll regret switching--I certainly don't--so, better to do it now than later.

Go with Disc every raid will still have 1 ,they having great CDs and put shields to prevent damage ahead(only that now let's hope they eat a healthy portion of the cake instead of the whole cake while the other healers watch). They got nerfed just so they don't make raids easier than it should be , ignoring some mechanics and topping recounts leaving other healers 15-20% behind.
As you stated if the changes/more nerfs they made go live ,MW will be on a worse position.
Btw if you want more info i would check the post about "jab nerf again" or something like that on mmochampion , check the comments of Affiniti from blood legion.
