This is no way gives anything resembling an accurate picture of class performance. Top 10 parses are typically filled up with people who are gaming mechanics (arcane in general) or have the help of their guild to get top parses.

Yep. Completely meaningless.

Did you check the dates for those top 10s? A lot of high number parses were put up by specs that were subsequently nerfed in 5.1 or hot-fixes yet they remain in the rankings...

Like pretty much all of Amber-Shaper as an example.

There was a bug where if a Fire Mage hit Combustion on the boss at the right time (pretty much just as his 99% damage reduction went up) they could one-shot the Monstrosity with it. Pretty much all of the top parses are that.

Top 10 in a vacuum is a silly representation, but saying "Oh it's an outlier it doesn't count" is also goofy--if you're going to balance PVE DPS it should be done based off of what the maximum potential in a reasonable sitaution is.

However, it should -also- be done based off of relevant gear during progression when it matters most, not BIS when everything in on farm status--and only on meaningful damage and not gimmicky stuff like cleaving/dotting up targets that get healed to full (IE, Protectors n stuff)

If you can factor those things in, then top output is most certainly what you want to balance around--so long as you're measuring meaningful output of course.

I prefer looking at actual dps numbers. This kinda thing would make some believe that mages
are 45 times better than those 0% classes. When in fact said mages (or locks) are actually only 0 to 20% better. Which is 0.0 to 0.2 times better.

Hehe , anyhow. I'm thinking this sort of stuff should only be of consideration for hardcore progression players. Still the only time it should matter is when someone is outright benched for another class*. Most of the rants involve personal ego rather than group performance.

*I'm not aware of the current ''benching'' trends.

Keywords - reasonable situation. Outliers aren't reasonable situations. Top 10 represents the luckiest crit streaks, combined with the most buffs fed, combined with encounter exploits, combined with the best play.

Right.

Say you've got two specs, A and B. Both, with perfect gear, and perfect play, average 100,000 DPS.

But Spec A has higher RNG variance than Spec B. With perfect gear and perfect play in 25,000 encounters, Spec A's DPS ranges from 85,000 to 115,000 while Spec B's ranges from 90,000 to 110,000.

When you take the top ten results, Spec A will have all of them, and Spec B will have none of them. But by any reasonable measure, the two specs have equal performance.
