Launcher, Log-in Problems

Lately, whenever I attempt to start up WoW, one of two issues rises up - either the launcher will get stuck at approximately 67% or, when I get in and chose a character, it'll take several minutes to get through a loading screen only to be immediately booted offline.

The only thing I've found that fixes the first problem is deleting the Battle.net folder in my users folder, though the problem reappears every few weeks. And the log-in problem's only fix is to restart the computer, as far as I've found. I recently heard that Blizzard stopped support for my OS version - could that be the root of my problems? - or do you think it's a virus or something like that? I've run scans with nothing found, but that doesn't necessarily mean that nothing's there.

I'm running Mac OS X 10.6.8, with 4 gigs of RAM and a 2.4 GHz Intel processor. I greatly appreciate any insight into this matter.

This doesn't look like it is being caused by your OS. Are you on a public or university network? This sounds like all the data hasn't downloaded yet because it is being blocked or some other connection issue.

I am on a university network, though I have no issues with it once I do get it to log in, and no issues with any other online game - Guild Wars 2 runs as well as it could on my laptop, and I can access my few mac games on Steam with no issue.

It could be that they targeted World of Warcraft specifically, which kinda sucks.

Would an interruption in the connection, even if it was unnoticeable to me, be enough to disturb the files enough so it wouldn't be able to connect?

It might, small chance though. After the launcher gets stuck at 67%, does it freeze or provide an error message?

Also, when the launcher is active, are you able to try to repair your game ?

The "updating launcher" screen pretty much freezes - the progress bar animation stops and goes instead of being smooth (the blue wave-gradient thing). I've let it sit for 10 minutes or so and it'll just sit there without getting a "Program not responding" flag. If I'm able to get it past that the launcher itself is fine.

I completely forgot about the repair tool - it's been ages since I've had to use it on my PC, and I'll use that now to see if it helps with the issue at all.

Finished with the repair, and it didn't help with the character selection issue - still boots me off as soon as the loading screen finishes. I can see the area around my character (and I've tried logging in a few different places with different populations, from instances to Dalaran to the Pandaria hub city) but just as I get hope, it gets extinguished.

Having the same problems; I am on a regular commercial service (Time-Warner); I have repaired permissions, disabled anti-virus, disabled the firewall, deleted the WTF files, restarted the computer (running 10.8.2, iMac, 12 GB RAM, 2.5 GHz i5), all to no avail. Incidentally, regarding the "repair launcher" thing: the launcher has no "help" option in the drop-down menu.

I know it's cliched but have you tried moving your Interface and WTF folders to the desktop and deleting the cache folders ? IE the ones in the wow folder and in the data folder ?

Also try deleting the cache folder at Mac HD -> Users -> Shared -> Blizzard

Yes, I've both moved and deleted (for different times - I use only about 3 addons so it's never much of a hassle) my WTF and Interface folders, as well as deleted the Battle.net folder in my Shared and the Battle.net subfolder in the Blizzard folder. In the past deleting the Battle.net folder has been enough to get through the launcher issues (which it has again this time) but has done nothing for being able to log on a character. The only thing that has fixed that is restarting my computer, but I've done that several times today (I must be insane, since repeating actions, you know) and still get booted off the server.

However, I did just notice that there's a second folder in my Shared called Blizzard Entertainment, and it has a folder inside called Installer Replacements, which only has a log inside. Relevant or no?

I'm having the same issue as well. I am also on a University network. I tried downloading the patch and it just simply wouldnt work I was stuck at 0%. So I went on a website and found the files for 5.2 downloaded those put it into my game file launch the game everythings good and it says I have 5.2.0 and I get to the realm selection screen hit US then normal it gos to the character screen and says connected and the whole game just freezes. I tried deleting the entire game and reinstalling and it was still stuck at 0% downloading. So I try to use a different internet than campus internet like starbucks and still nothing. 0% downloaded no matter what.

Shouldn't effect things no.

Can I see a connection.log file from the Logs folder of your wow folder ?

So, is the launcher still stuck at 67%? If it still is, then maybe some smaller updates aren't applied, which the client needs. It appears that the client itself is disconnecting, which mainly happens when you don't match our servers or is missing key information.

@Everyone else - It may be best to create a new post with your issue. This is a specific issue, which we'll suggest some specific stuff. While this may be similar, the solutions may not work since we're tailoring to this situation. Creating a new post will yield better results for you, so we don't mix/match solutions.

The launcher was fixed after deleting the battle.net folder in my Shared folder. (The only problem here is that it reoccurs every few weeks, but is fixed the same way every time, so it's just annoying.) The issue now is that I immediately get booted off the server whenever I try and log on a character.

In the past when I've had the same issue (being booted off the server), I've restarted my computer and that has fixed it, so I figured it was something like a corrupted file in my cache that it was hanging up on. But now it still kicks me off regardless of what I do -- deleting my WTF and Interface, deleting battle.net folder, restarting (which is all the knowledge I have on fixing a problem like this, heh).

I don't play much on the weekends when I return home (and when I do, it's on my PC) so I can't tell you if the situation changes when I change networks.

Let's do another test. Can you create a new admin user account on your Mac and see if you can login fine with that?

Problem solved. I went to user/shared files/battle.net and deleted the file; restarted WoW; voila! ! Works fine.

I did as you said, and it wouldn't let me past the launcher. It would start downloading the patch, get stuck at 0% (while I've already downloaded it yesterday) and then end after about 30 seconds with the message "Failed to download a required file. Please check your internet connection and try again."

I tried again with bypassing the launcher by launching the program itself, and it froze after about a minute without bringing up a window or anything. I copied the extensive report it sent to Apple, if you would want me to post it.

Hey Flaire,

Are you on a campus network? This error tends to happen on college/university networks that have additional security settings. I think it may be due to WoW.tfil file being blocked to download updates. That is a needed file for updating.

Yes, I am on a university network. That really sucks if they just blocked it - or if I only just really noticed because of a big patch.

Thanks a lot for your help over the last few days. It's much appreciated.

Just in case it helps at all, here's a trace route I ran connecting to this chracter's server, Area 52. Is there any way I could run a test like this for the update server? I just want to be sure that it's a problem with my school and not my computer before I tell my raid group I have to stop for the semester. :(

Okay let's revise.

I want you to go to :

/Users/Shared/Battle.net

and list the folders you see there.

Try to open wow and connect then copy/paste your connection.log again.
