My hard drive died on my computer. She's pretty old now, a dell xps 401 desktop. Currently have a Samsung 250g SATA drive.
So for those who may know, which SATA drives can I use besides old SATA drives. I've read that SATA II are backwards compatible but not 100% sure if I'm reading it right.
All newer generations of Sata are backwards compatible. So needless to say, you won't be getting the most out of your harddrive, but that probably doesn't matter a ton to the common user.
I'd say go ahead, drop $80 and get yourself a 500GB hard drive. Umm, also, you MIGHT need a power adapter, I don't know what the newest kind of power plugs are called on hardware, but they are the thin connectors (maybe an eighth of an inch thick, and about half an inch wide). NOT the 4-pin molex connectors. Do your research first there, and if you need an adapter, make sure to get one.
You should be able to use just about any modern HDD now just fine, most hardware these days are pretty Plug-n-Play (no drivers to install, formatting, etc)
