I have been thinking of picking up my pally whose sitting at 86 for ret/prot. Ret for PVP prot for PVE. However everyone keeps talking about how the sky is falling and their DPS sucks. No one should roll a ret blah blah blah. How bad is it truly? Both a PVE and PVP perspective plz.

My main focus would be RBG's.

Ret is underperforming in the damage department when it comes to people being equally geared and skilled in PVE. However the class mechanics and rotation are way more fun than ever. In PVP were are underperforming in the self survivability department we could use a few minor tools and a little on the low side when it comes to sustained damage outside of cooldowns, but once again ret is still fun to play. When it comes to rated play ret isn't bad for arenas though taking any other spec you will get better results and rated bgs no one wants or will take a ret since any other melee dps can do it better and any unique utility we bring can be brought by holy or prot. though warriors do have problems getting into RBGS as well but would be chosen before a ret paladin any day. Overall choose any other class and you will get a much better dps class.

Retribution is quite frankly terrible in PvP right now, if you do want to make one, keep it for PvE.

Exceptionally easy to CC repeatedly, very poor caster defense, and a distinct lack of offensive utility will see your face get wrecked with contemptuous ease anytime you are faced with a ranged unless you grossly outgear them and singled out as the first focus target by any group because of how poor your defenses are in this and many other scenarios.

People are correct that Retribution works well mechanic-wise, but in terms of actual effectiveness, it falls far short of most melee and there are not really any classes against which you can stand toe-to-toe and have a legitimate chance of coming out the victor.
