They don't actually.
PW: Shield, Divine Aegis, Spirit Shell, and Atonement healing do not show up in the battleground scoreboard. So really you get Renew, Prayer of Mending, Greater Heal, Penance (direct cast), and Prayer of Healing.
So when you see a Disc Priest topping the BG Scoreboard, you know they blew everyone out of the water. Otherwise, Disc Priests always look like the lowest amount of healing. And yes, a good Shadow Priest that multidots and makes good use of Vampiric Embrace, Devouring Plague, Renew, and Prayer of Mending, (plus the off Flash Heal) in a BG can look like they're outhealing Disc.

Well yeah, but when you have an RBG leader say, "Hey Mr. Disc, we're gonna let you go because your healing isn't that great" then you have to link Recount and dispels to prove that you don't need to be kicked from a winning team.
From my experiences, it doesn't always work. They'll kick you if they think your healing is low. It's a little frustrating for Disc.
If I was doing an RBG and someone told me that while I was on a disc priest, I'd happily leave :P I wouldn't want to run with someone that was completely clueless and relying purely on "the numbers".
Can't speak for RBGs, but if an RBG leader is using that as his or her primary source of information, I would not stay in that RBG.
As far as randoms go, I am almost always top 2 Alliance heals and have been since I hit 90. (More often than not, I'm number 1 these days). o.O I don't do it for chart topping or w/e, but if you feel concerned about your numbers - have you considered using Renew? I know a lot of PvP discs don't bother - I throw it around incessantly when I don't want to open myself up to an interrupt or use Inner Focus and I have no other healing options for that target at that time.
