The Rules:

1) Be excellent to each other. No one likes a jerk. Don't be a jerk in this thread. No fighting, no put downs, no name calling - or else Reta will beat you with a stick. >:(

2a) The title of the next thread is to be decided by general acceptance before this one caps; try not to overlap with previous ones. Whomever caps the thread should make the new one.

2b) Keep the ToS in mind when deciding on a thread title. This will make it far less likely to be deleted. Also, the title of the thread should always involve food! This is the healer forum and we're weird.

3) Copy and paste these rules and the below list into the first post of the new thread. Add the title of the new thread to the bottom of the list.

I don't know if Flinette has a recipe for fritters or not but I do enjoy alliteration, Flinette hasn't had a thread yet I don't think, and by george I couldn't stand not having one on a Friday.

Paula Dean's Corn Fritter recipe follows, I cannot condone the use of 'vegetable' oil.

Ingredients
1 1/4 cus self-rising cornmeal mix
1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1/4 cup sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup milk
2 large eggs, slightly beaten
1/4 cup (1/2 stick) butter, melted
1 (15.25 ounce) can corn, drained
Vegetable oil, for frying
Directions
Heat oil to 325 degrees F.

In a medium bowl, combine cornmeal mix, flour, sugar, and salt. In a small bowl, combine milk and eggs. Add milk mixture to cornmeal mixture, stirring well. Stir in butter and corn.

Pour oil to a depth of 2 inches in a Dutch oven, or use a deep-fryer. Drop by tablespoons into hot oil. Cook 2 to 4 minutes, or until golden, turning once. Drain on paper towels.

What's wrong with vegetable oil? Pure soybean oil works pretty well. I also recommend coconut oil.

Well, for one thing it's not made of vegetables. Everything about vegetable oil is a lie!11111!!111!!!! *dramatics* Vegetable oil in most cases refers to canola (rapeseed) or cottonseed oil.

I too recommend coconut oil, especially for frying dessert items such as sweet corn fritters. xD

Mmm, I could go for something buttery and fried right now.

Well, coconut oil has no actual taste, so you can use it for anything.

I have a bottle of vegetable oil in my kitchen, and it's pure soybean oil. You can buy canola oil separately, but I don't because it gives a strange flavor to certain dishes.

... plus there's virtually no such thing as non-genetically-modified Canola out there in the world anymore.

(I don't have the energy to eliminate GMO foods or ingredients from my grocery shopping in general, but when there's a situation where "the world's crop of this item is now close to 100% GMO" and there are easy alternatives... such as cooking oils... hell yeah).

As a footnote, I don't object to the *general* idea that modification of existing food sources is inherently wrong or bad or dangerous; I object to an awful lot about the implementation of agri-business and the uses agri-business has made of genetic modification.

Wish I could get back into real raiding...I hate my job hours. But just got back into WoW 2.5 months ago after a long hiatus. Haven't healed since beginning of wrath, and dang monk healing is fun.

Got to say though, been reading through these healing forums, I love them! Such a good community feeling here (as far as I can tell).

Yeah, I'm a bit of a spazball when it comes to GMO, Big Agriculture, grass-fed/pastured animals, how the food industry is trying to kill us and brainwash us into money-batteries (like the machines in the matrix) and succeeding with their scientifically-engineered-to-be-addictive-and-irreplaceable-by-anything-natural frankenfoods, and what I feel is best for health and humanity. I try not to let it come into my general conversation with people but it tends to leak out.

I don't eat canola oil nor HFCS nor soy in any form if I can possibly avoid it. When it comes to food and the food industry, I have tinfoil hat syndrome, fo sho.

It's a good place, for sure!

Being active on the forums is the major reason I've grown as a player. I still have a long way to go before I'd be anywhere near skill-capped, lol... but I'm 100% confident that I'm head-and-shoulders better than I would be if I didn't spend time discussing things here (& over on the priest class forum, where I began my healing journey).

Plus I've met lots of really interesting people! With Flex raiding coming in 5.4, I only see this kind of community becoming more tightly knit, even if not everyone participates in "forum pugs" and stuff :)

When it comes to food and the food industry, I have tinfoil hat syndrome, fo sho.

When it comes to the food industry, I have a giant hate-on for what is being done to sustainable agriculture, manipulation of developing world and 1st world farmers alike (aka the Monsanto issue for seed ownership and "trapping" farmers into a cycle of servitude to the herbicide company), the morality of how animals are raised and *processed* to maximize profits (getting into more serious human health concerns about e.coli contamination here on top of the treatment of livestock and any issues of genetic improvements like "breeding structurally unsound chicken to increase the size of chicken breasts" or "growth hormone therapy for milk cows" etc)...

... I do not object to humans raising livestock or consuming meat. I do not object to humans selectively breeding livestock (or plants). I do not object to the idea that we have knowledge which can be used to carefully *improve* food sources. I simply believe that agri-business saw that there was a potentially vast market out there for them to tap, and they muscled their way in there to make a fortune and control the market (and legislators) before the global community could hammer out systems to keep them honest, accountable, and *in check*. Agri-business is dictating how the world should produce food, and their only concern is the money in their pockets. They demonstrate over and over that their only concern for the environment, the animals they're harvesting, the humans they're employing (and forcing out of employment), and the humans they're feeding, is fused to their bottom line. Handfuls of people getting sick from e.coli contamination, for example, and some of those people dying, is of no consequence to their bottom line. Those human lives can be sacrificed because the compensation they *may* someday be required to pay to the families of the deceased is miniscule in comparison to the hit they'd take to change the way they process their animals to more comprehensively prevent contamination in the first place.
