Update: 8/19/2013

Thanks to everyone who provided feedback on the initial website-cleanup plan announced below. We read through all of your thoughts and suggestions, and based on that we’re making a number of changes to our initial plan. While our goal remains to clean up parts of the website that require frequent updates but don’t see a lot of traffic, we heard some great reasons to keep specific sections around, and in some cases we've come up with creative solutions to make that happen. Read our website-cleanup update for the latest information.

Original Announcement: 8/9/2013

Like any good webmasters, we look at World of Warcraft site stats on a regular basis, and we're always evaluating which aspects of the site people find most useful. Over time, we've identified a few areas that players don't really seem to visit but that still require a bit of effort for us to keep updated each time we release a new content update. For most of these, it's pretty obvious why they don't draw a lot of attention-they tend to focus on things that are simply more compelling to look at inside the game, are a "given," or are already well-served and readily available elsewhere, like on fansites.

Early next week we'll be doing some cleanup and removing the following rarely visited, higher-maintenance sections from the World of Warcraft website:

Game Guide

Guild Profiles

Character Profiles

Here are just a few fansites that provide a wealth of information on the above topics, as well as a whole lot more!

It's a shame to lose such a fantastic resource for pet/mount collectors and pet battlers. We'll always have WoWhead, after all, but still.

WoWprogress and stuff never really tracked my stuff well. I guess I can sign up for the other pet sites to track my things but it was very convenient to have it on the WoW site, especially for trading purposes.

Thems the breaks.

These appear to be armory/profile related?

Am I misunderstanding, or does this mean we won't be able to see people's professions/reputations there now?

Hey Zar, while you are cleaning the site, how about changing some character poses to show characters faces and their transmogs better please.

I'll be sad to see it go, but if it's going to make life easier on you folks, I'm glad it'll be done.

(the mounts and pets page was PERFECT for trying to find gifts for friends' birthdays and such!)

Eh I argue reputation is still relevant. it's a big deal for guild recruitment. For example in early 5.0/5.1, a big thing we looked at was how current people were on their black prince rep, on their faction daily reps for accessing more powerful gear upgrades, etc. If we can't check rep (especially early expansion) it makes it more difficult to gauge a persons level of effort toward their character

Really? :-\ I use Pets, Mounts, and Reputations all the time. I didn't even know I could see my professions on my armory or I would have used that, too.

Yes, this, too. Reputation is actually quite important if you want to see if someone has been keeping up with their characters.

Will the profiles still show what a character's professions are and what level? Even if you can't see the whole of what recipes they can make, it's useful to catch a glimpse at what professions a character brings.

I would encourage you to keep the hunter pets section. Everything else isn't needed.

A thousand times this - this is a purpose not necessarily served by fansites, and as far as I can tell there's no easy way to get this info in game, either.

Will this info at least still be accessible via the Armory API? (Same for reputation.)

Is there any chance we can keep the reputation and profession tabs for characters at the very least? I am not sure about others, but I know I visit both of those parts of the profiles fairly often!

I want to add a big +1 to keeping reputations. It is probably the most important thing on the armory for recruiting after what gear they are wearing.

edit: Just saw the professions are leaving too? Again, this is a big loss for character recruitment. If not enough people are using this information, that is just a shame, they really should be.

Perhaps there could be a better user experience for some of these features, like being able to see a character's professions or pets/mounts... and my gosh, reputations! That's one of the measuring sticks of a character's experience!

I mean, those areas are key to the character and I don't understand why we, in 2013, would be taking anything *away* from the extended experience, rather than adding to it.

So while incidence of usage may be low on those areas, perhaps it's due to how they are presented. The info itself however, is important.

Zar, I don't really mind the general Pets & Mounts gallery going away, but I would really like for you guys to reconsider taking them off individual character profiles.

I look at people's pet collections around Winter Veil because my guild does a Secret Santa. I won't be able to sneakily look at a guildmate's collection for gifting purposes. I suppose this isn't a critical use of the page, but it was nice. :(

I propose removal of all but,

Character Profiles
Pets & Mounts
Hunter Pets
Professions
Reputation
