It will have much the same flavor of play that was in D2.
Individual, randomized game "rooms" will allow up to 4 players to cooperate in each individual instance of Sanctuary. You are usually presented with a list of games in progress, as well as having the option to create your own fresh room, often allowing the option to limit the number of players, or to have a password to enter.
There will be waypoints and checkpoints that allow people to proceed from an approximate location, but if you leave one game in Act II, waypoint 3, when you come back to that waypoint all the monsters near it you may have killed before will be back, and the map is likely to be different.
It is not an MMORPG, and each time you create a new room everything is reset.
Outside of the room, there are often Chat areas, and there will be an Auction interface, as well as the arena system for PvP. The arena has not been fully presented to us, so we don't know how it will work for initiating combat -- i.e. can you duel someone by challenging them in 1v1?
You will probably have some opportunity to customize your appearance, your banner, and perhaps even to change around your equipped/stashed items from the "outside game" interface.

How is playing a game the way *I* enjoy it "wrong" if it's the way *I* enjoy it?
Who are you to dictate what's right or wrong for anyone else where spending their time and money is concerned?
They have said it would be limited to 4 this time, instead of the 8 player max from D2
