Got some errand to run after work, looking forward to starting this new character, as it will force me to try other abilities that I would otherwise never use.

This will be my 4th Monk.

As there are 9 pages for this thread, I didn't read through them all yet, and as I understand we can only use gold from this character, but we CAN use items in our stash. Can I sell items in my stash and use that gold for this new Monk?

Kinda a gray area, I don't see any real issue with it though, the challenge is about challenging yourself really, so if you deck yourself out in millions of gold of gear it kinda defeats the purpose =P But afew k here and there isn't bad.

the challenge is about challenging yourself

You're right, I started thinking about that later, but I also started thinking, anything I spend would be gone after I die, so... maybe not spend anything at all? o.O

I mean, I don't PLAN on dying, but I know we all will. I would like to at least get as far as I honestly could. :D

I just gave hardcore a try this week and it's really fun!
Gives death true meaning.

Now I know where legendary drops come from, fallen heroes! ^o^

I think I'll give this a crack tonight when I get home. I went through the motions and this is what I'll be taking.

Norlamin Silentread Male Monk

Hmmm, just looked and it seems things are going to be pretty tough earlier in the game. Here's hoping I can last until level 15 to 20. After that it should get a fair bit easier.

DH named Walkar...

Never played demon hunter before, passives look good but think my skills might be gimp.
I'll be lucky if I get to level 20!

So I decide to try again and got:

Name: Midiga

Gender: Female

Class: Demon Hunter

http://us.battle.net/d3/en/calculator/demon-hunter#UcYVQj!aeb!Zcaabc

I have never played a DH before so no idea if it's any good. a lot of late level passives though and I don't get grenades until level15!

NARULL: If a skill is smoother most of the time without it's rune (for the time being), and I have access to it's rune and I don't use it, am I breaking the rules?

I'm talking about HOTA.

Third attempt - after one glorious death and one embarrassing death so far - see how this one goes.

Male Monk Qupar

http://us.battle.net/d3/en/calculator/monk#WegSjk!WUY!caZcaY

this will be first time i have had to fight without skills - so even more challenge for me.

mostly skills i have not tried before - but this time, the skills might actually work.

edit - Finally got to level 11 without any skills. very slow going - just bashing everything with normal weapon attack. once i got the crippling wave at 11, I felt comfortable to go for the Butcher - which went quite well.

edit - After 8 and half hours play now level 20. Have just killed Maghda in Act 2 normal. this char is starting to get some useful skills - and may possibly become a viable char.

edit - After 13 hours - now level 26 and just completed act 2. Belail caused a few tense moments - but i got through. Have now found 2 legendaries - the first legendaries that I have found on Hard Core. One is a spirit stone - perfect for a Monk. So far have been only using items that have been found by this char - no vendors, or crafting or Auction House.

edit - after 20 hours playing - now level 33 and just completed Normal. Not sure if better to farm more normal or start Nightmare. Still only using self found items - but have been using jeweler to combine some gems - but only self found gems. Will be quite a long time now before i can unlock any more runes for skills i am using - but this build looks pretty strong.

edit - this guy is still alive and has taught me a lot about Monks. I now use two of the random skills on my main softcore monk. Still using only self found items - this guy is actually finding stuff useful my my other lower HC chars. Currently level 43. Only a couple of levels away from my final passive and then on to start unlocking some more runes. Currently wandering around Act 2 in Nightmare - still getting occasional red screen suggesting I am underpowered, so I back off for a while and rerun earlier areas. Only play this when the connection is good enough and my friends are not online - so progress is quite slow. Note - this char was created before the rules changed and the randomiser gave MP level, so have been sticking to MP0.

You MUST use the rune as soon as it is unlocked.

Yes it can suck(majorly lol) but think of it as your skill changing to the runed version as soon as you unlock it, no going back!

wow getting tricky in act 2 NM on my Wiz, latest rune changed my ray of frost to sleet storm, mass dmg is great but things have to be in melee range!

I truly think the key to this is not rushing. How is everyone else going?

4th is Wizard of geology, dead at level 32
5th is Monk of Boomstik, alive at level 32
6th is Monk of JPG, dead at level 31.

Narull, Really sorry to hear about the demise of Prulove. Skull reavers can hit hard :(

I have found I am much more attached to my hardcore char. Being my first HC char and Not buying stuff from the AH adds a new level of enjoyment to the game.

Looking forward to progressing Ani some more when I get home from hols.

Ok, I took a break to morn Prulove, was a very hard choice whether to remake her because I enjoyed the weird build, might do that at some point.

But for now! Introducing Aludove female Demon Hunter

http://us.battle.net/d3/en/calculator/demon-hunter#UZgRTP!XdU!ZbYcbY

Actually a decent build strangely enough, apart from no hatred gen till lvl 15, but still.

Now back to taking my time, seriously thats the key just don't rush.

Update:
Currently at level 41. About 2/3 of the way through Nightmare act 2. Damage is getting a bit spikey now and I have had a couple of close calls. The passive where I take less damage when immobilised has saved me a few times. HC definately gets the heart rate going.

I have been self found up to now, however I finally got tired of wearing blues from vendors and spending ages trying to black smith upgrades so last night I stopped doing self found and bought 2 fist weapons of the ah for 5k and 10k ... I felt a little dirty doing it :)

Its a shame there is no way to consistently farm rares (e.g. going back and killing bosses) as I would have been more than happy to do that. But by spending a measely 15k on the AH my DPS went from 580 to about 850.

The Tristam/Hidden Camp vendors will be devastated as they have made a lot of money off me ;)

I don't know a lot about monks but I really like my build and the talents seem to work well together.

Good luck to those still doing the HC Challenge and see you in 2013!

So, I fought Nekarat in Silver Spire lvl 1, and I had a few close calls, and after 2, I kited him back to the portal area so I can port between Silver Spire lvl 1 and Gateway to the Silver Spire.

A) WTF? Since when do mob's health regenerate?

B) Why is the flame circle he puts down an invisible, buggy DoT?

I was working on him, and after 5 minutes of trying to kill him on normal, he was max health. Then, I got him to about 20%, and he threw down a flame circle, and I saw it, and teleported back to GttSS. I ported back OUT of SS lvl1, and stood in GttSS, and drained from 70% to 0% in about 3 seconds, potion and templar heals on CD.

Bullsh*t.
