On any map you can run into a random npc character with a quest that you can join.

Demon Hunter - DH wants you to join them to fight a nearby elite/champion monster.
If you agree the DH joins your party like a follower and runs to the nearby monster for
the fight. Players that are DH's get a slightly different conversation.

Barbarian - Barb wants you to help their friend who fell through a crevasse. If you accept
the barb joins your party and leads you to a nearby fissure in the ground (similar to the
entrance to level 10 or 15 from D1) Hydra lives in crevasse and defeating it will sometimes
drop a broadsword that will occasionally play a mighty tune on a critical hit.

Witch Doctor - WD needs assistance finding a rare herb. WD stays put while you
have to run around the map to find a clickable plant that puts an item into your inventory
called medical herb. Eating the herb instead of returning it to the WD restores 300 x level
in hit points but 1 minute later all the colors on the screen flip opposite like a negative
for 1 minute.

Monk - monk is tracking pack of demons that have stolen mystical object. Will lead you
to small event where if you defeat large pack of imps/whatever one of the gods the
monks worship appears out of the object on the ground and drops a treasure before
evaporating away.

Wizard - wizard is searching for rare spellbook. Leads you to a dungeon with a library
that you have to fight/search to find it.

throw in quests for the paladin, druid, amazon too. Don't need necro that's already done in act 2.

If you leave the Goblin alone, there is a small chance that the portal they open stays open and you can enter a small area of the realm of Greed. Here you'll get more loot with a higher possibility of a Legendary item.

This is interesting. Players with low dps are slightly rewarded, since there is a chance for a big pay out, if the portal stays open.
Dark Mirror of the Soul:

A room where there is a mirror, once the player(s) passes in front of it. it copies a uber clone(s) from our player(s) and starts to fight us (juste like the shadow clones in the Diablo boss fight).
Witch Hunt:

You find a man whose son had been kidnapped by a witch. The witch hides in an old run down fort on the outskirts of west-march. The fort is overrun with traps, spiders, ghosts, and possessed villagers.

The event will have 4 random conclusions based off the D3 RNG system. In order of increasing difficulty they are:

A. The witch is actually a succubus in disguise, whom you must fight to save the boy.
1. Kill succubus.

B. The witch flesh-crafted the boy into a beastly abomination.
1. You can Kill it and take the loot.
2. You can try and reverse it, and gain a random buff (morality buff).

C. The witch is in actuality the mother, and the man was a demon who possess the boy.
1. You can Kill the boy.
2. You can listen to to the please of the mother and let the demon live.

D. No boy ever existed, the man and the witch are both demons, and you have been lured into their trap.
1. You fight the underhanded demons.

cool thread, hope to see lots of posts.

This reminds me of Mansions of Madness.
Actually I really did enjoy the epic multiple-steps quest it took to be able to farm the great Hellfire rings and I would like to see other kind of long farming quest required to build new epic legendaries. If there were more endgame possibilities like that it would be great.

Somes special item appearances could have their own events to be unlocked.

There could be some dungeons that exist in single player that only a specific class could do and have specific class-rewards.

I don't think the developers are out of ideas as much as they are out of time to them all...

More Uber-Boss fights!! I want a Uber Cydia for ins..
you could develop this even further by Having to kill the Treasure Goblin King for that special unique potential similar to the Sword that drops from Whimsyshire:)

My dog wants to play right now though so I'll have to posts more later....
Imperius Fight

In a rare event in Act IV with 5 NV, we stumble upon the injured Imperius nursing his wounds.

We can choose to talk to him or pick up Solarion on the floor.

If we choose to talk, Imperius will challenge you to a fight. If we win, he will acknowledge us as the one to fight Diablo and drop a legendary weapon of our class to assist us in the final battle. If we lose, we will lose the 5 NV and drop down back to town.

If we choose to pick up Solarion, Imperius will awake and try to stop us from leaving. The route to escape will be similar to the crumbling vault where there is a time limit. If we escape in time, we gain Solarion and we will face attacks from random angels in Act 4 for the rest of the quest. Solarion will be summoned back by Imperius once we exit the game or kill diablo
Act 3:

Village Defense

a path leading from fields of slaughter or the battlefields leads to a small town/village under attack from demons, inside the village helping to defend it are two Barbarians (diablo 2 style gear) who welcome you and offer you the opportunity to bath in the blood of demons.

after killing the demons (some old demons returned) they share the spoils of war with you providing you with a large amount of gold and one guaranteed rare or better item as the barbarians then escort the villagers out of the area to some place safe.
Rumford's Courage:

Randomly in the Fields of Misery the player finds Captain Rumford on a scouting mission for demons with other militiamen from Tristram.

Eventually, after fighting waves of demons, you encounter the demon that killed Captain Dalton. Rumford must face the demon along with the Nephalem and learn the meaning of courage. He realizes through these things that his own courage has bolstered that of his men, and comes into his own as a leader of the Tristram militia.

Upon completing you are awarded with an item that once belonged to Captain Dalton or someone of important to Rumford that is class specific and useful to you.

-----------------------

Simple event, but Rumford is one of my favorite minor characters and I always felt bad about his fate and the struggles he faced inwardly. It would be cool to see him take a stand before his demise.
I'd like to be able to organize "Melee dueling tournaments" in 8 player duel games.
Don't care if the hostility toggle stays out of the other modes.

Always been my favorite event.
Act 4:

Forge of the Angels

while exploring the high heavens, you find an area that leads to the angels forge/armory

you are given one of 4 events.

1 when you enter the forge, there are already demons in there and you must save the forge master.

2 the forge master is working tirelessly trying to forge, repair and work several stations at once, you must ether man stations to help him work the forge.

3 the forge master is working tirelessly trying to forge, repair and work several stations at once but this time asks you to save his fellow smiths that are trapped by demons in another part of the forge/armory.

4 get him an item located in another part of the forge that is being guarded by some demons.

reward is a leveled amount of loot and a 50% chance of a random artizan plan or an angelic item (new weapons and armor)
The Pumpkin smash suggestion is very appropriate for Halloween.
Act 1 an old farm full of possessed pumpkins that can fire/spit bolts of fire or poison, also armed with a sickle or other farm related tools as weapons, pumpkins tend to have above average loot drop.
can spit/plant seeds to grow more pumpkins.

This is a solid start for brainstorming new special events in Sanctuary.

This is pretty cool too, and I like the multiple possible endings. I'm sure there are a lot of great ideas for special events out there, and I'm looking forward to reading them.

This comment proves that the devs have no creative imagination. Why is it up to the fans (although its great giving ideas and commenting on what should be improved) to suggest things that the devs should be doing.
Its not that the devs dont have any imagination, but that we as humans dont always think the same way, my mind is all over the place with ideas, plans and complex creations.

ive been called a think tank more than once.

its the same reason we dont have 10 people or more writing LOTR type stories, HP or others that did extremely well.

however i would like to know just one thing,

is it possible that we could see some of our ideas from here appear in game? if so would we be able to get at the very least acknowledgement of it.
Enslaver's Arena of Chaos

Along the way from Leorics Manor to the Butcher, you come across a NPC Champion Enslaver ghost who offers you riches if you can survive his Arena of Chaos. Upon acceptance, a portal opens in a cell behind locked doors. The Enslaver states there are 13 Champions (because there is 13 slots of gear on our Chars), each bearing a weapon or item used in unlocking said door, which you must defeat and bring back to a corpse within the cell (which becomes the Enslaver himself) After reincarnation, you are greeted with an intense version of the Enslaver, minions and all, fully equipped, with a variance of skills that randomly generate.

In the conversation he invites either a test of trials beyond or a chance to walk away empty handed. If you agree, the Champion ports outside the cage and a battle to the death ensues. If you kill the Champion, the door unlocks to the cell, and a special item drops. But the true test is within the Portal. Upon entering and fighting more minions, you enter a gladiator style arena. After fighting a series of various champions (could be say random Elites from D1 to D3 and some new ones as well!), your final test is to battle yourself, with massive multipliers to health and damage, your same skills mirrored, same gear. everything. But what you yourself would "dream" to be overall! (if you are in group play, everyone is mirrored!).

Upon winning, the Enslavers ghost reappears applauding your success, and then asks which treasures would you like to choose from as your prize. 13 pedestals appear for your selections. You choose one, then the Enslaver gives you the choice of 2 main stats. After the creation of your new item, a new portal appears and you continue the regular game.

Obviously, if you die, you die and are ported back to where you started. To make it interesting, you can "lock" an item in from your personal gear you are wearing only, so if you die, the Enslaver keeps it as his prize upon your death! Thought of this after I posted!
How about an event wherein a treasure goblin comes to you for help. He's just trying to get by, picking up junk to sell to feed his children and buy his son some braces and such and there's a group of PCs after him. He comes to you for aid and you have to fight off actual PC NPCs that are geared up and equipped like actual players. Their party is comprised of 4 characters of random classes. You might find yourself up against 4 different classes or you might find yourself fighting 4 very well geared witch doctors. If you successfully save him from an untimely end, he will give you a reward... like a very high level gem or something.
