Diablo 3 is Alive, and healthy

The game is very much alive

Please stop using xfire as it can only tell you trends. from a small segment of people. It's understandable that when a new game is released (i.e RoS) user activity goes up before falling off. This is common for every game.

So lets use what is known.

    1) New characters who reach 70 without completing story mode will more likely see 0 games for torment 2+
    2) Games usually fill up within 2-5 mins
3 ) Full games are not accounted for in the search function.
    4) Private games are not accounted for in the search function.

on average during peak hours in the Americas there is roughly

400-600 games T6
200-400 games T5
400-600 games T4
500-600 games T3
300-500 games T2
300-500 games T1
200-320 normal-master
Total 2300-3520 games X 3 players per game minus 1 open slot

6900-10560 current players during peak hours. Not Active players, active daily players will have a much higher number. (i.e take the lower number 6900x24 hour day cycle)

(private games & full games excluded, and other servers)

Now compare that number with the steam statistics. Why steam? because steam owns a huge portion of the PC market share.

Here are the top games played on steam

-The top 20 games during peak average around 8000-20,000 players
-The top 10 games during peak average 20,000-100,000

Now remember Diablo's player base cannot fall below 6900 due to the exclusion full games, private games, additional servers.and lobby players. Taking just 1 component drastically gives you an idea of where Diablo stands

i.e The stats above are for americas. Now assume Europe server has minimum of 6900 on at this very moment that 6900+6900=13,800-21120 currently playing at peak. If you want to go further and add asia server which most likely has a higher population. But lets be critical and assume the lowest 6900*3 = 20,700-31,680

Alright lets address this 15 million copies.

reference:
http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2014/02/06/15-million-copies-of-diablo-iii-sold.aspx

So this "15 million copies sold" is a bit misleading.
The 15 million copies sold is referencing how many copies have been sold since it's initial release back in May of 2012 up to now.

1) Every game has a fall off of players Diablo is no exception. but it will also continue to rack up sells as long as it remains on the store shelves.
2) The 15 million copies sold also takes into account console releases. As PC players you will never see those players.
3) 15 million sales does not mean 15 million will buy the expansion.
4) 15 million sales does not mean there should be 15 million unique accounts logged on for the duration of 3 years.
5) There has never been an expansion that has outsold it's original counterpart. Due to the requirement of needing the the original. Now lets take a look at RoS numbers

Reference:
http://ca.ign.com/articles/2014/04/03/diablo-3-reaper-of-souls-sells-27-million-copies-in-one-week

Bcause RoS release is pretty recent, you can use that as a base of what the current player base size is. 2.7 million copies of RoS was sold on the first week. So lets assume 2.7 million is the max player base cap. of that 2.7

Again it's not 15 million sold, and now 10k players therefore fail LOL HAHA fail sauce blizzard sucks no it's

6900-10k log on at any given moment. or multiply by a 24 hour day cycle 165,600-240,000 log on daily.
165,600-240,000
+Euro Server, + asia server
+Full games
+Private games
+Lobby players

now because everyone has different schedules it's hard to determine how much of that 2.7 million is playing(i.e John logs on Monday, Dave logs on Tuesday still registers as 1 daily.

So what does this all tell us? While Diablo 3 is not the top played game, it still is very much alive and healthy. Is it the best game? no neither are some of the games topping the charts of steam. However you feel about the game it's very much alive with a healthy player base.

(updated for accurate reading)
Problem is once you say it is, it's so fragile it vanishes away like a whisper. . . .
Game that took 10 years to make and has the backing of Blizzard only has 8k people playing at peak?

Yeah, so alive. Just because it falls in with other mediocre games, doesnt make it "good".
Plus not everyone uses Xfire, Ive never had an account for it. Last thing I need is some OTHER program to run in the background to hit up my friends with. Steam and skype do just fine imo.

again this is only during peak not daily active users to do that you would have to take the lower end and multiple that by a 24 hour cycle. Also this is excluding full and private games which would bump that number up and lastly this is only for the americas

steam user statistics are international if you want to compare the two you'd have to take America's stats + Europe (asia not included as I don't think steam is available there). Which would bump Diablo in the upper bracket of most played games.
- game sells 15 million copies
- people realise game is trash and has nothing on the previous titles
- most people leave 2 months after release
- omy guys 8k people are playing it at one time, games so healthy!
- lol.
you have to ask your self why does blizzard not want to post the number of people "not games" online playing D3 D3ROS. only one think I can think of is the number is an bit on the low side.

but hay having just about all of an friends list full of people that don't log in anymore and all the people you know that had D3 and D3 ROS have uninstalled it. let along not 1 but 2 clans ware you been the only one to log in for over an month each before you leave them.

but that's what we get then they make makes like toilet paper

Don't forget rift it forward alone has 5,000 people at any given time and those people are playing in private invite only games.

Because the number is lower than other blizzard titles and the initial 14,000,000 sales. The number is still high enough that most companies would sell their soul in order to have that many players.

The best thing is your whining is just the icing on the cake. I get to play D3 and enjoy it and when I am at work and bored I get to respond to your and others posts about how dead it is.

I just love how much time you and people waste complaing about a game that is "So Horrible".

What do you do when your mom serves you dinner and you don't like it? Complain or just slink off to the basement and see if there is a half eaten hot pocket under a couch cushion? and yes my post was supposed to be sarcastic and a little insulting. You should feel right at home, you lit the fire I am just fanning the flames.

this game is amazing.

This game is good but it's far from being amazing, imho.

About numbers: all I know is that D3V sold over 12+ million copies while RoS sold half as many copies (~6 millions --> may/june numbers).

In any way you look at it, you cannot deny that many were disappointed with this game and that they didn't even buy the x-pack.

For the situation we have now, well... 8k people is nothing compared to 6 millions, neither if you multiply it by 3 (EU, NA, Asia) and add another "theorical" 12k people to each region (which will make 60k people on a total amount of 6 millions which is 1%).

And let me tell you that probably 2.1 hype will last for a maximum of 1/2 months (or MAYBE for 1 season) and then we'll be back to boredom.

What this game really needs is PvP / PvEvP / PvEvE / minigames and this sort of things.
There wont be another expansion. This game is unfixable.
+1 best troll thread of the day
you realize.. that you say this game is alive and well... but there are equal, if not more people still playing D2 at the same exact time. so much for alive and well. this game sold like 18 million copies, its nowhere near "alive and healthy"
Selling 15 million copies tells me Diablo has a huge following.

If you play the game now, you will know that Diablo HAD a huge following.
How many of those games are bots?
Top most active games via steam. Remember that Diablo's minimum peak cannot fall below 5000-8000 due to the exclusion of full games, private games, lobby players, and other servers. adding just 1 of those components up shows you just well Diablo is doing

i.e assuming euro server has same player population as Americas 8000+8000 = 16,000 players peak which again falls in the upper bracket of games most played internationally via steam.
