Fresh Meat N' Greet - Agency#1564

Barbarian
The world of Sanctuary is a BIG place, defended by hundreds of thousands of heroes each and every day. To help you get to know some of these fellow nephalem a little better, we've created the Fresh Meat N' Greet.

The Fresh Meet N' Greet is a recurring series of interviews featuring you, our community. A few times each month, we'll sit down and chat with six different community members, one for each class, and then post our Q&As right here in these forums.

Up this week for Barbarians: Agency#1564

Read on below to find out more about your fellow ally in battle!

[GENERAL INFO]

Grimiku: Tell us a bit about yourself.

Agency: I'm 35 and I live with my girlfriend of 3 years in the hills of Tennessee. No kids, just her cat. I just graduated from college for the 2nd time (accounting first time & nursing this time). I actually never worked a day as an accountant though, lol, which ties into an interesting factoid about me - I was a professional gambler for 7 years.

I was working construction while I went to school back then. I kept that job while I figured out how I wanted to make the accounting thing work, and then my enthusiasm & curiosity for gambling led to a more enjoyable career than accounting seemed to offer. So, from 2005-2011 I was a professional gambler (it's a real thing, I swear! I paid taxes every year and did all kinds of serious-person stuff!). I played poker online mostly. I played in real casinos when I wanted to travel, and I also made +EV casino game and sports betting plays. Eventually, US government intervention had me redirect (they made a few decisions that made it progressively more difficult to gamble online as a career - eventually it became wiser to move on for me). At that point, I decided to go back to school to become an RN.

I'm into personal growth and holistic (mind/body/spirit) health - I've read nearly everything Ken Wilbur has ever written. I have enormous extended families on both sides, 22 living aunts/uncles and over 100 cousins in total. I see some of them frequently, and all of them at least a couple times a year. I've played video games on one platform or another since my mom got herself an Atari 2600 when I was 5 or so.. she can still kick my !@# at Pac Man.

Grimiku: Got any cool hobbies or talents?

Agency: I am an amazing amateur groundskeeper...best lawn in town! For real, my lawn looks like frikkin Wrigley Field after I mow it, and I have a 40 sq ft garden with 8 different fruits and veggies coming in nicely. I do meditate multiple times a day, and I say that's a pretty cool hobby in addition to being a health practice.

Grimiku: How long have you been playing Diablo games?

Agency: Since 2002-2003. My brother loved D2, and had raved about it for months. When I finally sat down to try it out for the first time, I played for 2 solid hours.

Grimiku: What other games are you currently playing right now (if any)?

Agency: None really, sometimes my girlfriend walks me through her Simpsons game for iPhone. That and a game called "My Singing Monsters", which is pretty entertaining to watch her play for a while

Grimiku: Do you play any other classes?

Agency: Yep, I have a level 70 Crusader for horsing around.

Grimiku: Are you in a great clan or community? If yes, tell us about them!

Agency: hehe, I'm in a clan called 'Schitz N Giggles'. Most everyone in the clan are real life friends or friends of friends. When clan chat is lively, it reminds me of hanging out with big groups of friends growing up.. lots of fun and warmth and silliness.

Grimiku: What monster is your most dreaded foe and why?

Agency: Dune Stingers! Just when I think I've gotten close enough to hit one, it darts away, and I get a face-full of bees! Large groups of them give me flashbacks to Ikaruga.

Grimiku: What's your most embarrassing moment while playing?

Agency: Missing every <removed> Leap and landing where I started instead of making a sweet jump the first few times I played with my clan mates.

Grimiku: Okay, what about your most AWESOME moment while playing?

Agency: It's more of a recurring theme than a moment:

Me (to my girlfriend): "quit looking for things to click and get over here!"
On her screen: BING! BING!

.. I don't know how she does it

Grimiku: If you could be friends with any character in the Diablo universe, who would it be and why?

Agency: The monk. I've practiced meditation for a while, but I've haven't been able to master the whole teleport thing.
[BUL'KATHOS GUIDES MY HAND]

Grimiku: What drew you to the Barbarian?

Agency: They're completely bad $%^ on multiple levels. Brutal, strong, fearless with a proud & rich heritage.. of all the classes in D2 and D3, the Barb character's answer to "why are they fighting?" was the one that made the most sense... was the best ride to go on.

Grimiku: What type of Barbarian are you: sword-and-board, in-your-face melee master, long-distance damage dealer?

Agency: Absolutely in-your-face melee master. I always made Frenzy Barbs for D2 ladders, and even when I'm not in a melee spec (like many LeapQuake builds) I like to stand there and stoically take my hits.

Grimiku: What's your favorite skill (or skill rune), and why?

Agency: Hammer of the Ancients. It's a simple, straight-forward bigass melee whomp. You guys totally nailed the visual and sound, it's a lot of fun to use. It didn't leave my skill bar for 40+ levels after I unlocked it the first time.

Grimiku: What build are you running currently?

Agency: Fire LeapQuake no spender, because stoically taking my hits is more fun when I'm watching them burn.

Grimiku: If there was one thing you could change about the Barbarian, what would it be?

Agency: For one specific change, I'd bring back fury-on-crit. It would be in the form of a set bonus, legendary affix, or possibly a high level passive ability.

More generally, I'd make gaining fury and spending fury synergize better at a fundamental level. It seems like, vs. the most difficult content, that we can generate enough fury to use our spenders consistently and make our spenders powerful, but not both within the same build.

Grimiku: What's your favorite Barbarian-themed movie?

Agency: Conan the Barbarian! (the old one, not the new one with that pretty-boy)

Grimiku: Pick a Barbarian quote!

Agency: "Bul-Kathos guides my hand!"

My girlfriend teased me that she would shout that while I walked across the stage at my college graduation (she didn't, unfortunately)
[WHO'S NEXT?]

Grimiku: Which Barbarian should we interview next?

Agency: I could easily name 10 I'd like to see interviewed. One of those is Nubtro#2147, he's a crowd favorite :)

Grimiku: Pick a question to ask in the next interview!

Agency: "If you could add item support for any build, what would your build be like?"

Got any questions yourself for Agency? Post them below!

god this is so wrong game is boring greater rift mob density and map suck and u guys doing this instead of hot fixing stuff already..nothing more to say about this company anymore just stupid how seeing these topic even created

I don't believe this is taking away time and/or resources from the game designers, graphic artists, programmers etc. - the ones who adds and fixes stuff.

I always take it as a personal compliment when my hero shouts, "Bul-Kathos guides my hand!" After all, it is I who am guiding his hand in a very literal way using my mouse, so doesn't that make me Bul-Kathos? ;)

Congratulations on your nursing-related college degree!

You´re a cool dude Agency, wouldn´t have bet on pro poker though.

What about sports or does your garden/meditation keep you fit?
And where does one find GFs that enjoy playing D3 with you?

Btw. you shouldn´t have chosen me as the next "target". My answers were awkward but I am a weirdo, so hopefully no one cares/will care.

Please note that these questionnaires were sent during PTR, first week of August or so, so many of the Barb-related things I wrote back then may not be the case anymore.

Anyway, thanks for creating this, Grim.
This is really cool...what if I got picked??? =O
That's a good read. Thanks Grim and Agency. I once dreamed of being a poker pro myself and was actually getting serious about it...then Black Friday happened and snapped me back to reality.

Nice to know all these things about you Agency so thanks for sharing.
Interesting read Agency.

Thanks for the share.

I too am a bit of a gardening fanatic and have a healthy competition with the street over who has the best lawn.

Cheers

Don't lie CC. Pooping on your neighbor's lawn isn't exactly healthy competition.
I've always loved the close range characters but the barb lately is being neglected equipment dps wise and toughness since last patch went up things have gotten easier but before that to run as a barb was thought as crazy no one ran barb because of low dps

but i trust you can do something right
I love how now that Raekors is good everyone gives up on leapquake right away. Just shows how clunky and !@#$ty of a build it really was to begin with. Hopefully we start seeing some build diversity on the leaderboards, I am working very hard to get my slightly different Raekor build onto the leaderboard (uses HOTA/Avalanche instead of Frenzy/BattleRage and different passive choices, gear is the same except I have reapers wraps instead of strongarms to help my fury gen (to fuel HOTA when I am on charge cooldowns etc).

Glad to see some love for the Barb in this patch though, at least Raekors is fun/playable with some options for diversity, not like leapquake where you just leap leap leap (stand until off cooldown) leap leap leap etc

I had started to think my answers convinced Grimiku to scrap this project :p

Congratulations on your nursing-related college degree!

thanks! I just got my license to practice last week :)

I love playing all sports, but I actually don't take the time to play much lately - seems like it's harder to find people who play pick-up games for any sport. Once every couple weeks I'll play soccer or football with my nephews. I mostly stay fit by working outside and taking long walks around where I live.. and putting a lot of attention on eating good things.

I wish I had a clever reply to the GF question, but I got nothing good right now :)

Hehe, you think your answers were awkward? I can relate to that. I really did imagine Grimiku decided not to run with my interview because of how bad or embarrassing or off-the-mark my answers were.

Right on - I'm glad you dug it. I had a reality check back then too - I got majorly spooked by the crash, and I considered moving to another country with more economic stability. Then I realized that practically every country's economic fate is tied into the US's.

I'm still not sure if I shared too much or not :P

Where I live, not having farm animals grazing is good enough to be the best lawn. Seriously though, do you have a garden? If so what do you grow?

Yup, we have a garden.

As well as the usual hedges, roses etc (which are pretty common for this part of Australia)

We have a little veggie patch and are getting some chickens soon (I love fresh eggs). We grow carrots, potatoes, lettuce and tomatoes. Also grow our own garlic and herbs including basil, rosemary and thyme. We also have an apple tree.

Nothing better than cooking with ingredients straight from the back yard.
Interesting. I played on PokerStars mostly, but spent some time on Full Tilt too. You are right, the US Government made it impossible to play online anymore, but there is a group working to get online poker legalized - the Poker Players Alliance, of which I am a member. If you google it, you can find it online and join! We need a lot of support!

I am lucky enough to have a house in Philadelphia, five minutes from Parx Casino and an hour from Atlantic City, so I play about 3 to 4 times a week. I am semi-retired from the movie industry so playing poker supplements my income quite nicely. In fact, I'd rather gamble at a casino than the stock market any day. (I'm no Negraneau but I can hold my own in the games I play.)

Nice to find another poker player here. When they finally do legalize it again, I'd love to play in a Diablo League. It would add a whole new dimension to your favorite saying, "Bul Kathos guides my hand!". ;-)

Good interview. Since I have the full Raekor's Set, I'm going to take a look at your barb and maybe give it a try on my alternate barb.

Thanks for sharing! Good luck and good gaming!

Yeah, there were a few delays that occurred between you submitting the answers to actually publishing the interview. I should have emailed you with a heads up to keep you from wondering, so sorry about that! The timing started getting a little crazy with all of the other things going on with Diablo III, but I'm glad you were kindly patient while waiting through all of it. I look forward to doing more of these, and really appreciate you taking the time to be a part of it! :)
